The previously untold origins of Olaf, the innocent and insightful, summer-loving snowman who melted hearts in the Academy Award®-winning 2013 Disney animated feature, Frozen, and its acclaimed 2019 sequel, are revealed in the all-new Walt Disney Animation Studios animated short, Once Upon a Snowman. The film follows Olaf’s first steps as he comes to life and searches for his identity in the snowy mountains outside Arendelle. Once Upon a Snowman is directed by Trent Correy (animation supervisor, “Olaf” in Frozen 2) and Dan Abraham (veteran story artist who boarded Olaf’s “When I Am Older” musical sequence in Frozen 2) and will be debut exclusively on Disney+ October 23, 2020. It stands for an idealistic – perhaps even escapist – approach to culture that accentuates traditional values and embellishes the romantic dimensions of human (and oftentimes animal) relationships. Since the 1990s, the term ‘Disneyfication’ has been used by scholars to describe the transformation of society into a giant spectacle, consisting of theme parks and superficial entertainment. The spectrum of Disney films (and productions associated with or financed by Disney) is much wider than many movie-goers suspect; it includes animated cartoons (e.g., Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, 1937; Fantasia, 1940; Mulan, 1998; Ratatouille, 2007; Up, 2009; Frozen, 2013; and Inside Out, 2015), sci-fi flicks (Tron, 1982), musicals (Mary Poppins, 1964), as well as documentaries (The Living Desert, 1951) and even avant-garde films (The Straight Story, 1999). Introducing the Disney+ slate, Kennedy said, “We have a vast and expansive timeline in the Star Wars mythology spanning over 25,000 years of history in the galaxy—with each era being a rich resource for storytelling. Now with Disney+, we can explore limitless story possibilities like never before and fulfill the promise that there is truly a Star Wars story for everyone.” Among the 10 projects announced for Disney+ is “Obi-Wan Kenobi,” starring Ewan McGregor, with Hayden Christensen returning as Darth Vader, in what Kennedy called, “the rematch of the century.” Also announced are two new series from Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni, off-shoots of the multiple Emmy®-winning “The Mandalorian.” “Rangers of the New Republic” and “Ahsoka,” a series featuring the fan-favorite character Ahsoka Tano, will take place in “The Mandalorian” timeline. Kennedy announced that the next Star Wars feature film, releasing in December 2023, will be “Rogue Squadron,” which will be directed by Patty Jenkins of the “Wonder Woman” franchise. Even Tokyo Disneyland offers a special Frozen event- a pa- rade from January to March 2016. This means that people are still enthusiastic aboutthe film. Many commentators have con- sidered the factors of the movie'ssuccess; its powerful sound- track or the content of the film. One of the most influential of Disney's animated films, Frozen was released on November 2013 in the U.S and came to Japan on March 2014. It was based on Hans Christian Andersen's book, The Snow Queen, which was published in 1844 (Wilde 143-144).
