    2021 Redemptorist Reflections Daily Lenten Devotions Prayer Fasting Almsgiving The Redemptorists With Him is plentiful redemption. (Psalm 130:7) Who are the Redemptorists? St. Alphonsus Liguori was born in Naples, Italy, in 1696. He left a promising legal career against the wishes of his family and became a priest. Alphonsus dedicated himself completely to serving the poor and most abandoned, and in 1732 he founded the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer: The Redemptorists. Alphonsus and his companions preached the word of God in rural and isolated communities around Naples. By the early 19th century Redemptorists were serving in central Italy, Poland, Germany, Belgium, and Holland. In 1832 six Redemptorists traveled to the United States and for the first time began missionary work outside of Europe. They served initially among Native Americans and then with Irish, German, and Slavic immigrants. In 1850 the Redemptorists’ American Province was established in Baltimore. Today we Redemptorists continue our ministry to the poor and most abandoned, in inner cities, hospitals, and prisons. We preach parish missions, staff parishes, promote devotion to Our Mother of Perpetual Help, and participate in many evangelization activities through traditional and new media. Following in the footsteps of St. Alphonsus Liguori and 18 other confreres who have been canonized or beatified, approximately 5,500 Redemptorists serve in 82 countries throughout the world.     Saints Related to Young People Thomas Aquinas—Academics Thomas was a gentle teacher who believed faith and reason when used wisely would enable all humanity to know and love God as the angels. He studied in Paris from 1245-1248 under Saint Albert the Great, then accompanied Albertus to Cologne. Here he received the nickname “dumb ox,” though he is now considered a Doctor of the Church, and one of the most intelligent philosophers of all time. Vitus—Against Oversleeping For obscure reasons, some 16th century Germans believed they could obtain a year's good health by dancing before the statue of Saint Vitus on his feast day. This dancing developed almost into a mania, and was confused with chorea, the nervous condition later known as Saint Vitus' Dance, the saint being invoked against it.     Don Bosco’s Devotion to Mary Help of Christians Mamma Margaret and Francis Bosco instilled into their children a strong devotion to Mary, praying the rosary together daily as a family. John made this devotion his and would make the recitation of the rosary one of the cornerstones of his Preventive System. John was devoted to Mary under any title though at various times of his life there was greater emphasis placed on one or the other. Growing up, the primary devotion was to the Immaculate, as the Woman who remained free from the stain of sin, always doing God’s Will. In Chieri, during his first vocation crisis at the end of high school in 1835, John made a novena to know the Lord’s Will, as regarded that vocation, to Our Lady of Grace for it was her painting that adorned one of the altars in the Duomo there. Upon moving to Torino, Our Lady of Consolation was most frequently appealed to since her church was but a stone’s throw from the Oratory and there was an ancient devotion to her in that city. It was before her image that Don Bosco knelt and to her that he entrusted himself, asking her to now “be his mother” upon Mamma Margaret’s death in 1856. Then, revolutionary fever escalated in Italy (or, better, in the many individual kingdoms in what would become Italy in 1870). Rebels began to ask for the unification of Italy, whether peacefully or by force. Kings could give up their smaller kingdoms peacefully in favor of a unified Italy or they would be taken by force, if necessary.

Also last year, the Sisters of Mercy began looking for a suitable residence for some of their senior sisters. “The Parsons Boulevard location offers an ideal convent residence for our older sisters. The building has a beautiful chapel and simple, but lovely rooms and common areas. The locale has green open space, ample parking, and is centrally located in the New York area where our sisters have ministered for many years. Formally erected as a sister province of the Baltimore Province in 1875, it was initially known as the Vice-Province of St. Louis. It eventually divided again between regional foundations in Chicago, New Orleans, and Oakland. The Denver Province presently affiliates with the Vice- Provinces of Bangkok and Manaus and hosts the external province of Vietnam. Today, the classification system at the Archivio Generale Redentoristi (AGR), has retained the name of the original St. Louis Province in identifying the collection associated with this unit of the Redemptorist family. A good place to begin to understand the various permutations of the St. Louis Province is through the work of Father Peter Geiermann’s Annals of the St. Louis Province (1924) in three thick volumes. Unfortunately, it has never been updated. The Province awaits its own full-scale history. The St. Louis Province covered a large swath of the United States at one point—from Whittier, California to Detroit, Michigan and Seattle, Washington to New Orleans, Louisiana. Redemptorists of this province were present in cities such as Wichita and Kansas City, Fresno and Grand Rapids, San Francisco and San Antonio. Their formation houses reached into Missouri, Illinois, and Wisconsin. Schools could be found in Oakland and Detroit. Their shrines in Chicago, New Orleans, and St.

    Church Entity Engagement with Catholic Professional Standards The Australian Catholic Bishops Conference (ACBC) and Catholic Religious Australia (CRA) approved the National Catholic Safeguarding Standards (the Standards) in May 2019. This approval indicates a clear expectation that Catholic entities across Australia are now required to implement the Standards. Whilst entering into a Service Agreement for an audit against the Standards is not mandatory, it is strongly encouraged by ACBC and CRA. This report provides information about the engagement of individual Catholic entities with CPSL. This report will be updated at the end of each month or as otherwise specified. 141 out of 262 Catholic Church entities have formally engaged with CPSL to the end of November 2019 – this represents 54% of identified Catholic entities across Australia.
