Paula Linder reported that she and a number of fishermen had gone before the Parks Commission in June to ask for consideration of moving up funding to enlarge the Fort Smith Parks parking lot on the city’s priority list. She added that Bill Smreker met with Forsgren Construction to get an estimate cost for the Fort Smith Park parking lot expansion. The request would make Fort Smith a destination to host highly profitable fishing tournaments. The softball field project at the corner of Martin Luther King, Jr. Park is still but a plan on paper. Fundraising is going slow. I asked the Ray Gosack, City Administrator about the city’s committed funding and he assures me that it is in place. This multi-group project was highly represented at the Parks Commission meeting. “By having their own softball field that they can put a sign up ‘Home of the Lady Bears’ and take pride in fixing it up, you know, that just means something to you,” said Jim Rowland, Athletic Director for Fort Smith Public Schools. “The people of Fort Smith have always stepped up, and I think they’ll step up again especially for the opportunity to help these ladies have a new home,” Roland continued. Mike Alsup with Fort Smith Parks said the field will get new fencing and dugouts, concession and press box, a place for pitchers to warm up and possibly a batting cage. Alsup went on to say they hope to have the new field up and running for the start of the Lady Bears’ 2015 spring season. If you would like to make a tax-deductible donation to the project, you may send a check made out to the Fort Smith Park Partners, noted MLK Ballpark, to P.O. Box 934, Fort Smith, AR 72902.
