Vigorous competitive activities are haiiyd as an outlet for aggressive impulses. Determ- ination, courage, coop,tivkness and loyalw are listed as traits wl-ch may accrue from competing. in orgartilked genes, climbing mountains or engaging in personal combat of-a-Sporting nature.. One of the most universally held tenets is that sports are a microcosm of life itself and thus serve as a laboratory where a positive value system may be formulated and developed. Yet we are disturbed because of many incongruities in this line of reasoning. We observe some former athletes who are conceited and arrogant. Excessive ,nationalism and occasional racism manifest themselves in sporting contests. The greed for publicity, popularity and money sometimes 'becomes en overriding priority. Exploitation of athletes, commercialism and violation of rules are too often practiced in order to win. The god of victory Occasionally assumes such an Important position that this end is used to icestify means which are unethical and even criminal. \,..7 While taking satisfaction in the good that ha I beendone,iand can be done, through sport, we also must be willing to face up our problems and failures and be willing to change where reforms are necessary. To identify the characteristics of great athletes through research is not tuo difficult and there is available a substantial amount of evidence pointing out .__personality traits which appear to predominate Care must be exercised, however, not to infer a causeeffect relationship between the possession of certain -personality traits and participation in sports. It is just as possible that individuals with certain traits are likely to become great athletes as itis that athletic participationevelops these characteristics. A combination of both 'possibilities may be closer o the true answer. These thouis constitute a background for the conference, "The Development of Human Va ues Through Sports," held in Chicopee Falls, Massachusetts, October 12-14, 1973 a d recorded in thjs- book. While most of us believe that values can be developed thugh spcos, we also realize that such development is not automatic. There are hun 10s of definitions of values. When we refer to human values we think of those attitudes and behaviors which emphasize and enhance the dignity and worth of man and his capacity for self-realization. Human values are marked by consideration for others, an understanding of their problems and a spirit of . empathy. In sports, concepts such as fair play, graciousness in victory, respect for opponents, freedom to move, loyalty to teammates and the giving of self might be considered human values. Each person will and must establish his own value system. It need not be the same for everyone. Value systems that lead to behavior which produces a better society and greater fulfillment for each individual should be developed and fostered . To understand better the meaning of values, as considered in this conference, let us attend to the following words of Milton Rokeach: I consider a value to be a type of belief, centrally located within one's total belief system, about how one ought or ought not to behave, or about some end- 5 6 state lit existent ei ssorth cir rot wall attaining Values are

Seb Coe, mastermind of the 2012 Games, won gold for the 1,500 metres and silver for the 800 metres at the 1980 Olympics in Moscow and repeated the feat four years later in Los Angeles; Colin Moynihan, Chairman of the British Olympic Association, won silver for rowing as the cox of the men’s eights in Moscow 1980. Both sit on the Tory benches in the House of Lords, having previously been MPs: Moynihan in Lewisham East (1983–92) and Coe in Falmouth & Camborne (1992–7). But how many other Conservative politicians have represented Britain at the Olympics? Rather a lot, as it happens – including some who did so at the same time as they were in the House of Commons. The UK’s first Olympic champion was a politician, but neither a British nor Conservative one. The Irish Nationalist John Pius Boland, who sat for South Kerry from 1900 to 1918, won the country’s first two medals at the first Olympiad of the modern era, the 1896 Games in Athens. It seems to have been done on a whim: as an undergraduate at Oxford two years earlier, Boland had heard a Greek student at Balliol, Konstantinos Manos, speaking at the Oxford Union about the modern revival of the Olympics, in which he was involved. The two became friends and Boland ‘looked him up’ a couple of years later after heading to Athens to see the Games.1 Boland was only supposed to be a spectator, but – with help from Manos – entered the lawn tennis tournament ‘on the spur of the moment’, playing in leather-soled shoes with ‘a tennis bat of sorts’ he picked up at a local bazaar.2 He won the men’s singles and, after the partner of the German he had beaten in that tournament dropped out of the doubles with an injury, Boland stepped into his place and won that too.3 Luckily for him, the Games ‘were held about Easter, and it was possible to be back at Oxford in time for my last summer term’.4 1 John Boland, Irishman’s Day: a day in the life of an Irish M.P.

    FISU OVERVIEW: FISU stands for Federation Internationale du Sport Universitaire (International University Sports Federation) and was founded in 1949. FISU's main responsibility is the supervision of both Summer and Winter Universiades (World University Games) as well as the World University Championships (WUC). FISU’s main governing body is the General Assembly which represents the members of the organization (153 National University Sports Federations). The Governing Body elects the Executive Committee for a period of four years, which makes all the necessary decisions for the smooth running of FISU. Ten permanent commissions advise the Executive Committee in their specialised areas, simplifying its duties. FISU is funded through subscription, organising and entry fees, television incomes, and marketing activities. The Universiades (World University Games) The Universiade is an international sporting and cultural festival which is staged every two years in a different city and which is second in importance only to the Olympic Games. The Summer Universiade consists of 12 compulsory sports (Athletics, Basketball, Fencing, Football, Gymnastics, Judo, Swimming, Diving, Water Polo, Table Tennis, Tennis, Volleyball) and up to three optional sports chosen by the host country. The record figures are 9,006 participants in Bangkok, Thailand in 2007 and 174 countries in Daegu, Korea in 2003. The Winter Universiade consists of 7 compulsory sports (Alpine skiing, Snowboarding, Nordic skiing composed of jump, cross country & combined, Curling, Ice Hockey, Short-Track Speed Skating, Figure Skating, Biathlon) and one or two optional sports also chosen by the host country. They gathered a record of 2,511 participants in Torino, Italy in 2007 and a record number of 50 countries in Innsbruck, Austria in 2005.

This dissertation examines the response of the Imperial Cricket Conference (ICC) as the official governing body of ‘international’ men’s cricket to developments related to decolonisation of the British Empire between 1947 and 1965. This was a period of intense political flux and paradigmatic shifts. This study draws on primary sources in the form of records of ICC and MCC meetings and newspaper archives, and a wide-ranging corpus of secondary sources on the history of cricket, history of the Commonwealth and transnational perspectives on history. It is the contention of this dissertation that these cricket archives have hitherto not been exploited as commentary on decolonisation or the Commonwealth. Due attention is given to familiarising the reader with the political backdrop in the Empire and Commonwealth against which the ICC is studied.
