Mailing DKPS 2009 English Def 10 th DUTCH KINKS FAN MEETING Dear Kinks-Fan, Almost two years after the last edition, on the last Sunday of April, we organize the 10 th Dutch Kinks Fan Meeting. Again this will take place in the heart of our country, in rockcafé ‘Stairway to Heaven’ in Utrecht. Because it's 40 years after the release of the Kinks-LP ‘Arthur Or The Decline And Fall Of The British Empire’ the theme of this day will be ‘Arthur - 40 years’ . In this newsletter you can read everything you need to know to be there. Don't miss it! The Kast Off Kinks, with musicians who have played in The Kinks, will perform in a new line-up. Hopefully it will be a surprise party, because we're still talking with other possible special guests (!!!). ‘ARTHUR - 40 YEARS’ ON SUNDAY APRIL 26, 2009 , FROM 11.00 UNTIL 18.00 UUR IN ROCKCAFÉ ‘STAIRWAY TO HEAVEN’ MARIAPLAATS 11-12 – 3511 LJ UTRECHT (CENTRUM) WITH LIVE-PERFORMANCES OF THE KAST OFF KINKS 2 with former Kinks-members MICK AVORY (drums) IAN GIBBONS (keyboards) JIM RODFORD (bass guitar and vocals) and the only ‘not-Kink’ DAVE CLARKE (lead guitar and vocals) SUPPORT ACT FLAMIN’ STARS The Kast Off Kinks 2 + support act In 2007 bass guitar player John ‘Nobby’ Dalton and keyboard player John ‘The Baptist’ Gosling decided to leave The Kast Off Kinks. Their farewell gig took place in May 2008. For a short time we thought “That's it!”, but fortunately it wasn't. In November 2008, during the meeting in London of The Official Kinks Fan Club, The Kast Off Kinks 2 made their debut with bass guitar player Jim Rodford (in the Kinks since April 1978) replacing John Dalton and keyboard player Ian Gibbons (in the Kinks from June 1979 until April 1989 and after that since 1993) replacing John Gosling. Jim Rodford played in The Kinks during their last concert in The Netherlands (‘Phobia’-tour) on July 1, 1993 in the Beurs van Berlage in Amsterdam. At that time Mark Haley played the keyboards. Later that year Ian Gibbons took over again. The line-up of The Kast Off Kinks 2 is completed with 2 members of The Kast Off Kinks : drummer Mick Avory and lead guitar player/singer Dave Clarke . DKPS Newsletter February 2009 Our ‘house band’ Flamin’ Stars will again be the support act, a logical choice when you think of the enthousiasm that singer Paul van der Lelie and his band manage to excite with their strong versions of well known and less known Kinks-songs. Music market-place, Official Kinks Fan Club, ‘Kinks Fan Of The Year’ and raffle • Beside the live-shows there will be a small music market. A great opportunity to level up your record collection. • Aren't you a member yet of the one and only (British) Official Kinks Fan Club? During this day you will have the opportunity to become a member of this fan club. • Curious who will become ‘Kinks Fan Of The Year 2009’? Come to Utrecht on April 26 and you will find out. • Proceeds of the raffle go to the Dutch Childhood Oncology Group. Looking forward to a Kinks-day? Avoid disappointment and ensure yourself of a ticket as soon as possible. We expect that a lot of fans, not only from The Netherlands but also from other countries, would like to see The Kast Off Kinks 2. And in the meantime it's no secret anymore that we're doing our very best to turn this 10 th edition of the Dutch Kinks Fan Meeting into a very special event (!!!). By order of the firebrigade the maximum number of people in 'Stairway' is 450 and the last 2 meetings attracted over 400 visitors. Tickets are € 22,50 Send an email to any of the board members below and we will reserve your ticket(s). You can pay for the ticket(s) on April 26, 2009 in ‘Stairway To Heaven’. How to get to ‘Stairway To Heaven’ ‘Stairway To Heaven’, Mariaplaats 11-12, 3511 LJ Utrecht is in the centre of Utrecht, between the train station and De Dom (the tower of the cathedral of Utrecht). The History of the Kinks Singalongs and The Kinksfan Kollektiv by Geoff Lewis Photos courtesy of WhyKinks, Retroman Blog, Brigitte Jeffs, Ben Elsendoorn, Ruud Kerstiens, Alison Neale, Olga Ruocco, Dave Quayle, Simon van den Bergh, Jeanine Hoedemakers, Jurrien Schadron, Rob Williams, Steph Williams, Julia Reinhart, Rebecca G Wilson There is a tradition of fans getting together for a few drinks before Kinks-related events, Ray Davies gigs, Dave Davies gigs etc., and in 1998, a few Dutch fans suggested meeting up the evening before the annual Official Kinks Fan Club Meeting (known colloquially to the fans as “The Konvention” and held on a Sunday afternoon late in November). The Clissold Arms has always been well known to the fans as the home of the Kinks, as it was the site of the first ever live performance by Ray and Dave Davies, so that was the obvious place to meet up. About a dozen of us had a very pleasant evening in the saloon (now the main restaurant - the layout of the pub in those days was somewhat different) discussing all matters Kinks and examining the small area of wall that contained a few pieces of Kinks memorabilia and photos, and it became a regular feature of the Konvention weekend for those who had travelled to London on the Saturday to gather at the Clissold. The Clissold Arms Kinks wall 1998 The numbers meeting gradually increased over the years and in 2002, Henny Stahli and the late Herman Gombert (“The Kinky Two”) were among our number. Herman got his guitar out and started strumming and the rest of us happily sang along to a few Kinks classics.
