In 1498, Emperor Maximilian I (HRR) moved his court to Vienna, thus founding the “Hofmusikkapelle” (Chapel Imperial), and the Vienna Boys Choir. Over the centuries, the Viennese Court attracted musicians like Heinrich Isaac, Johann Joseph Fux, Christoph Willibald Gluck, Antonio Salieri, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, and Anton Bruckner; Joseph Haydn, Michael Haydn, and Franz Schubert were themselves choir boys. -

HOWARD COLLEGE MUSIC FALL 2018 RECITAL Monday November 5, 2018 Hall Center for the Arts Linda Lindell, Accompanist Makinsey Grant . Bb Clarinet Fantasy Piece No. 1 by Robert Schumann Fantasy Piece No. 1 by Robert Schumann (1810 – 1856) was written in 1849. It is the first movement of three pieces written to promote the creative notion of the performer. It allows the performer to be unrestricted with their imagination. Fantasy Piece No. 1 is written to be “Zart und mit Ausdruck” which translates to tenderly and expressively. It begins in the key of A minor to give the audience the sense of melancholy then ends in the key of A major to give resolution and leave the audience looking forward to the next movements. (M. Grant) Tony Lozano . Guitar Tu Lo Sai by Giuseppe Torelli (1650 – 1703) Tu lo sai (You Know It) This musical piece is emotionally fueled. Told from the perspective of someone who has confessed their love for someone only to find that they no longer feel the same way. The piece also ends on a sad note, when they find that they don’t feel the same way. “How much I do love you. Ah, cruel heart how well you know.” (T. Lozano) Ruth Sorenson . Mezzo Soprano Sure on this Shining Night by Samuel Barber Samuel Barber (1910 – 1981) was an American composer known for his choral, orchestral, and opera works. He was also well known for his adaptation of poetry into choral and vocal music. Considered to be one of the composers most famous pieces, “Sure on this shining night,” became one of the most frequently programmed songs in both the United States and Europe. -

One of the casualties of this change was the recital recording, in which an artist or ensemble would present an interesting arrangement of musical pieces that followed a certain theme or style—much like a live concert. Although recital recordings were of course made, and are perhaps making a comeback, most recordings featured a single composer and were sold in alphabetized bins: B for Bach; V for Vivaldi. -

Chapman, Professor of Music at the University of Vermont. Dr. Chapman directed the choir until his retirement in 2004. At that time, the group's name changed to the Vermont Choral Union, and Gary Moreau, well-known Vermont music educator and singer, succeeded Dr. Chapman as director through 2010. Carol Reichard, director of the Colchester Community Chorus, served as the Choral Union's guest conductor in Spring 2011. -

At a Glance – Silent Night by Kevin Puts (1972) • Silent Night, an opera in two acts by composer Kevin Puts and librettist Mark Campbell, was commissioned and premiered by Minnesota Opera in 2011. • The opera is based on the 2005 French film, Joyeux Noel, which recounts the true story of a spontaneous ceasefire (known as the 1914 Christmas Truce) among Scottish, French and German soldiers during World War I. • Kevin Puts won the Pulitzer Prize for Music in 2012 for Silent Night - his first opera. Nikolaus violently stabs a man to death. Jonathan is forced to leave his brother, who has been shot, on the battlefield. Casualties on all sides are assessed and lamented. • Gifts arrive on Christmas Eve for the troops, followed by sentimental singing by the soldiers on all sides. The three lieutenants agree to a cease-fire. The soldiers bravely enter no-man’s land, greet one another and share their gifts. • Father Palmer sets up a makeshift church and leads a mass. Anna appears and sings for the troops. • The truce is extended so the dead can be buried. • Word of the truce reaches headquarters. Troops on all sides get reprimanded. • You are a history buff and want to see a live reenactment of a historic event during WWI.
