AUGUST 2009 GTO of the Month Earl and Barbara Lewis’ 1967 GTO
THE HOOD SCOOP AUGUST 2009 GTO of the Month Earl and Barbara Lewis’ 1967 GTO My name is Earl Lewis and I am married to the beautiful Barbara Lewis. We just celebrated out 27th wedding anniversary. I am a Farmers Insurance agent and have been in the insurance business for over 30 years. Barb is the gas manager of J.D.Streett. We have five children. Scott is the police chief of Cottleville, Mike is in construction, Kristie is a photographer and graphic artist, Travis is looking forward to joining a local law enforcement agency, and DJ is a lead mechanic with Sears, and pursing a career with a local law enforcement agency as well. My love of GTO’s began in the fall of 1967. I was going to pick up a friend who needed a ride home, who just happened to work for a Pontiac dealer. INSIDE THIS ISSUE: As I came down the hill in my 1962 Chevy Bel Aire with a 283 bored-out to 301 with 13/1 popper piston and an Isky no float cam milled head 4 speed and I saw it. Each step of the event is becoming a familiar routine, but the thrill of opening the boxes and admiring some amazing modelling skills is growing with every race. The action on the track never fails to excite and surprise me either. I hope some of that excitement is conveyed in these pages. This month, Alan has kindly shared some of secrets behind his fabulous homemade decals that have graced HO tracks around the UK over the past five years - and have helped bag him two Best-in-Show awards so far this summer. He’s even sent some samples for the return boxes. Thank you Alan! As we are a UK-based drag racing series, there’s also a focus on Santa Pod Raceway in this edition. The Santa Pod team need all the support they can get in these difficult times. -
2011 NHRA Full Throttle Countdown to the Championship
Countdown to the Championship 2011 NHRA Full Throttle Countdown to the Championship he Countdown to the Championship, NHRA’s playoff system, reached maturity in its fourth year of Texistence in 2010. From drivers to crew chiefs to ESPN to, especially, the fans – for everyone in the NHRA community – the Countdown became a household name in 2010. Everyone understood the format and everyone was dialed into it from the first staging of cars at the season-opening 50th annual Kragen O’Reilly NHRA Winternationals to the dramatic finish at the 46th annual Auto Club NHRA Finals. All of which helped to contribute to a 51 percent spike in ‘fan avidity’ for NHRA in the 2010 ESPN Sports Poll. It was the largest move by any one of the 31 Major Sports in the poll and it vaulted NHRA all the way up to 11th overall and just a tenth of a percentage point behind the NHL in the poll that asked ‘avid sports fans’ which sports they were ‘very interested’ in. On the track, drivers began talking about Countdown strategy early in the year – do you keep the pedal down and create a winning culture in your pits or do you stalk the lead and pounce during the six-race playoff? Some (Larry Dixon) effectively implemented the former strategy while others (Greg Anderson and LE Tonglet) effectively implemented the latter strategy. In between was Funny Car icon John Force, who had an up-and-down year that he was either lucky enough or good enough to time just right. After his lowest low at Reading, a first-round failure to stage in Race 4 in the six-race playoff, Force rebounded with back-to-back wins at the NHRA Las Vegas Nationals and the Auto Club NHRA Finals to win his NHRA-record 15th championship. -

Five of these special Mustangs made their competition debut at the 1965 NHRA Winternationals, where they qualified in the Factory Stock Eliminator class. The car driven by Bill Lawton won the class. A decade later Bob Glidden won the Mustang's first NHRA Pro Stock title. Rickie Smith's Motorcraft Mustang won the International Hot Rod Association Pro Stock world championship. In 2002 John Force broke his own NHRA drag racing record by winning his 12th national championship in his Ford Mustang Funny Car, Force beat that record again in 2006, becoming the first-ever 14-time champion, driving a Mustang. -

Drag Racing - Overview Generally, Drag Racing Is a Contest Between Two Racers Who Have to Reach the Required Destination in Order to Win the Race
COMPILED BY : - GAUTAM SINGH STUDY MATERIAL – SPORTS 0 7830294949 Drag Racing - Overview Generally, drag racing is a contest between two racers who have to reach the required destination in order to win the race. The races are always started by an electronic device known as a Christmas Tree. Each racer has to start a timer from the start line. The timer stops automatically when the racer reaches the destination. This start to finish timing is known as Elapsed Timing. A Brief History of Drag Racing If you look back through the hourglass of time, drag race is much older than it seems. It’s root stretch back to post war era during the period of 1930s. THANKS FOR READING – VISIT OUR WEBSITE www.educatererindia.com COMPILED BY : - GAUTAM SINGH STUDY MATERIAL – SPORTS 0 7830294949 During 1940s, the racing done side by side became popular by the term drag race. The reason why it became the name is unknown. It might have started when racers motivated one another to drag their car out of their garage and race one another. In case, maximizing the revs, drivers may hold the car in gear longer, or drag through the gears. The reason behind the term quarter mile distance is as unknown as the term drag race. In 1951, to create order from chaos, an individual body known as the National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) got created. It acts as a governing body for drag racing and hosts events all over the United States and Canada. Apart from that, the sanctioned body would also familiarize safety and performance standards in terms to legitimize the drag racing.
