Capps, NAPA Start Celebration for 50 Years of Funny Cars with Win at Winternationals, Start Mello Yello Season on Fox
Ron Capps celebrates his Winternationals victory with his NAPA team and family: from left, dad John, wife Shelley, son Caden and mom Betty. Capps, NAPA start celebration for 50 years of Funny Cars with win at Winternationals, start Mello Yello season on Fox Last Sunday was Valentine’s Day but the season-opening NHRA Circle K Winternationals in Pomona, Calif., didn’t show much love to Don Schumacher Racing. That is, unless you are Ron Capps and the NAPA AUTO PARTS team led by crew chief Rahn Tobler and assistant Eric Lane who opened the 2016 NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series season by winning the Funny Car title to begin a special year that commemorates the 50th anniversary of the Funny Car. Their 2016 Dodge Charger R/T was the only one of seven DSR entries to advance past the second round of Mello Yello eliminations and they went all the way. Capps and the NAPA team were dominant all weekend during the first of 24 national events with seven of their eight runs in the 3- second range including all four in qualifying that helped the team earn the No. 2 spot. “I have the best team in the business, and they gave me a great racecar,” he said. “All four runs in the 3s in qualifying, I don’t think anyone else did that. I knew we had a good racecar. Tobler and I have grown so much together. It’s like a marriage. He really keeps me in line on race day. We had a heckuva day.” And it was a banner weekend for NAPA Racing. -

Keep on Moving: Hotrods & Horns: the Making of Life, Love, & Loss
Keep On Moving: Hotrods & Horns: The making of Life, Love, & Loss To lead off, I have to give my support to the workers of Stop & Shop who are forced to forgo their wages while the company tries to replace them with Johnny 5s from Short Circuit. Please do not cross their picket line. Moving on… The first time I wrote about one of Jay Berndt’s bands, Kilgore Smudge, was literally 25 years ago in a paper called The Cowl at one of the local colleges. I mention this because it was a pivotal experience in my life. I didn’t know anyone in a band, but seeing Kilgore in its various incarnations got me out to see local bands and introduced me to a whole new world. On their debut album, Life, Love, & Loss, Jay Berndt & The Orphans take the R&B/soul of Van Morrison and cascade it with the dramatic highs and lows of Springsteen. To take a deeper dive into Life, Love, & Loss, I posed a few questions to my main man, Mr. Berndt himself. Marc Clarkin (Motif): Much like the title suggests, Life, Love, & Loss packs in a little of everything. How long did it take to put it together? Jay Berndt: The bulk of the songs were written between 2012 and 2013, when the Orphans first started. We actually recorded 50% of the album back then, but I was not happy with the sound of the home recordings or the performance of the band. So I scrapped the whole thing and started all over with a new version of the Orphans in 2014. -
Racing, Region, and the Environment: a History of American Motorsports
RACING, REGION, AND THE ENVIRONMENT: A HISTORY OF AMERICAN MOTORSPORTS By DANIEL J. SIMONE A DISSERTATION PRESENTED TO THE GRADUATE SCHOOL OF THE UNIVERSITY OF FLORIDA IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY UNIVERSITY OF FLORIDA 2009 1 © 2009 Daniel J. Simone 2 To Michael and Tessa 3 ACKNOWLEDGMENTS A driver fails without the support of a solid team, and I thank my friends, who supported me lap-after-lap. I learned a great deal from my advisor Jack Davis, who when he was not providing helpful feedback on my work, was always willing to toss the baseball around in the park. I must also thank committee members Sean Adams, Betty Smocovitis, Stephen Perz, Paul Ortiz, and Richard Crepeau as well as University of Florida faculty members Michael Bowen, Juliana Barr, Stephen Noll, Joseph Spillane, and Bill Link. I respect them very much and enjoyed working with them during my time in Gainesville. I also owe many thanks to Dr. Julian Pleasants, Director Emeritus of the Samuel Proctor Oral History Program, and I could not have finished my project without the encouragement provided by Roberta Peacock. I also thank the staff of the Samuel Proctor Oral History Program. Finally, I will always be grateful for the support of David Danbom, Claire Strom, Jim Norris, Mark Harvey, and Larry Peterson, my former mentors at North Dakota State University. A call must go out to Tom Schmeh at the National Sprint Car Hall of Fame, Suzanne Wise at the Appalachian State University Stock Car Collection, Mark Steigerwald and Bill Green at the International Motor Racing Resource Center in Watkins Glen, New York, and Joanna Schroeder at the (former) Ethanol Promotion and Information Council (EPIC). -

(PHOTO: AutoImagery.com) COUNTDOWN IS ON Hagan, Magneti Marelli/Rocky Boots team leads DSR into playoff with Funny Car top seed, Massey ranks second in Top Fuel The seven Don Schumacher Racing teams will get a well-earned weekend off before leaving next week to start the seventh annual Countdown to the Championship on Sept.13 at zMAX Dragway near Charlotte Motor Speedway after the 18-event NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series concluded Monday. DSR’s teams are in solid positions to make runs at NHRA world championships and $500,000 bonuses that go along with the titles. Leading the way will be Matt Hagan and the Magneti Marelli Offered by Mopar/Rocky Boots Dodge Charger R/T team that have made a miraculous turnaround after not qualifying for the Countdown a year ago and will start this year’s edition as the No. 1 seed. Hagan’s team, the 2011 world champion, suffered through 2012 without winning an event title or No. 1 qualifying position, but after 18 events this year with new crew chief Dickie Venables and rookie assistant Michael Knudsen the team has won four titles and four poles heading to the Countdown. Hagan starts as the top-seed with a 30-point lead over DSR teammate Ron Capps and the NAPA AUTO PARTS team. October 22, 2009 A Storied Rivalry Put Drag Racing on the Map By DAVE CALDWELL ONE day in 1964, Ed Donovan, a drag-racing pioneer who was known as the Mole, came up with a nickname for Tom McEwen, his lead-footed driver. There was not much money in drag racing then — winners were often given a $100 savings bond, plus free parts and oil — but every hotshot had a nickname. One of McEwen’s top funny-car rivals was Don Prudhomme, a lanky driver from Southern California who was so cobra-quick off the starting line that he was known as the Snake. So Donovan tagged McEwen the Mongoose, a mammal that seizes and kills venomous snakes. Their match races became genuine showdowns. “This wasn’t rasslin’ or anything fake like that, and that’s what made it so popular,” Prudhomme said in a recent telephone interview from his office in Vista, Calif. “We just wanted to beat each other.” Because the rivalry grew between the two drivers — McEwen in his Plymouth Duster, Prudhomme in his Plymouth Barracuda — the sport changed. In 1970, McEwen talked Mattel into producing 1:64 scale Snake and Mongoose cars as part of its Hot Wheels die-cast toy line — and into becoming drag racing’s first sponsor outside the automobile industry. -
Topeka Sweep for Mopar
TOPEKA SWEEP FOR MOPAR The NHRA Kansas Nationals last weekend was one for the history books in the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series and one Matt Hagan and crew chief Dickie Venables will not soon forget. After setting the national elapsed time and speed records on Friday night at Heartland Park Topeka with a 3.862- second pass at 335.57 mph, the fastest a Funny Car has ever traveled in 1,000 feet or a quarter-mile, the Mopar Express Lane/Rocky Boots team led by Venables and assistant Michael Knudsen took the event title on Sunday afternoon to earn an NHRA Wally trophy for the second straight weekend and jump from ninth to fourth in the Mello Yello standings. Under sunny skies and temperatures in the low 80s, NHRA fans tuning in live on Fox Sports 1 were treated to a wild pedalfest in Sundays’ final round between Hagan and his Don Schumacher Racing teammate Jack Beckman, who Hagan also beat in last weekend’s final round in the Southern Nationals at Atlanta. Hagan pedaled his 10,000- horsepower Dodge Charger R/T at least half a dozen times before crossing the finish line to earn his 20th career event title and first at Heartland Park Topeka. “It was wild,” Hagan said of the final round. “It’s important to put everything in perspective. We set world records for E.T and speed, and then to come back out here to win this race is a tribute to my guys and their hard work. My butt was puckered pretty good on that last run. -
