  • Capps, NAPA Start Celebration for 50 Years of Funny Cars with Win at Winternationals, Start Mello Yello Season on Fox
Ron Capps celebrates his Winternationals victory with his NAPA team and family: from left, dad John, wife Shelley, son Caden and mom Betty. Capps, NAPA start celebration for 50 years of Funny Cars with win at Winternationals, start Mello Yello season on Fox Last Sunday was Valentine’s Day but the season-opening NHRA Circle K Winternationals in Pomona, Calif., didn’t show much love to Don Schumacher Racing. That is, unless you are Ron Capps and the NAPA AUTO PARTS team led by crew chief Rahn Tobler and assistant Eric Lane who opened the 2016 NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series season by winning the Funny Car title to begin a special year that commemorates the 50th anniversary of the Funny Car. Their 2016 Dodge Charger R/T was the only one of seven DSR entries to advance past the second round of Mello Yello eliminations and they went all the way. Capps and the NAPA team were dominant all weekend during the first of 24 national events with seven of their eight runs in the 3- second range including all four in qualifying that helped the team earn the No. 2 spot. “I have the best team in the business, and they gave me a great racecar,” he said. “All four runs in the 3s in qualifying, I don’t think anyone else did that. I knew we had a good racecar. Tobler and I have grown so much together. It’s like a marriage. He really keeps me in line on race day. We had a heckuva day.” And it was a banner weekend for NAPA Racing.

October 22, 2009 A Storied Rivalry Put Drag Racing on the Map By DAVE CALDWELL ONE day in 1964, Ed Donovan, a drag-racing pioneer who was known as the Mole, came up with a nickname for Tom McEwen, his lead-footed driver. There was not much money in drag racing then — winners were often given a $100 savings bond, plus free parts and oil — but every hotshot had a nickname. One of McEwen’s top funny-car rivals was Don Prudhomme, a lanky driver from Southern California who was so cobra-quick off the starting line that he was known as the Snake. So Donovan tagged McEwen the Mongoose, a mammal that seizes and kills venomous snakes. Their match races became genuine showdowns. “This wasn’t rasslin’ or anything fake like that, and that’s what made it so popular,” Prudhomme said in a recent telephone interview from his office in Vista, Calif. “We just wanted to beat each other.” Because the rivalry grew between the two drivers — McEwen in his Plymouth Duster, Prudhomme in his Plymouth Barracuda — the sport changed. In 1970, McEwen talked Mattel into producing 1:64 scale Snake and Mongoose cars as part of its Hot Wheels die-cast toy line — and into becoming drag racing’s first sponsor outside the automobile industry.

  • Hot Gossip Will Be 98% Nitrofree!
Read the story then come back and click Before these Fuel Coupes had even fired up, I was reflecting on the buzz the links, you’ll have more fun that way... I’d got from watching Rune Fjeld and Eric Otley put together their new Mobil 1/Pepsi Trans Am to become the quickest EuroRacers with a stout 5.58 at 257mph. In the first round Rune got the hole shot but hit tyre shake, clicking off as KC Spurlock sped to 5.39 at 266 for the win. Words & photos Mike Collins “Hollywood,” as he’s known, became an instant legend as the first fuel coupe rookie to win an NHRA event first time out, and only a couple of NitroPilots have done it since! Licensed shortly before the event and with just half-a-dozen passes under his belt, Hollywood ran a string of 5.3s, beating reigning NHRA Champion Bruce Larson and then a true racing legend Ed “the Ace” McCulloch (“Roaring down memory lane” by National Dragster Editor Phil Burgess at Dragster Insider), and the pair met again in the 1990 Gatornationals finals above (links to the ESPN’s 5-minute Finals show - with the Greek beating the Bud King!). As I put these words down in Street Machine came the thought that most of our readers are aware of the awesome ground pounding power of NItroFired Fuel Coupes thundering into the night, and especially Eurodragster readers, but either way, many weren’t born when I was enjoying this magic moment! So I decided to grab a few signed images for our younger readers to enjoy with a glimpse of some drag racing greats in a special Legends Signature Edition kicking off with our
