MUSTANG CONVERTIBLE: GOOD FOR THE SOUL

From ford.com Reminders

Protective sun-drenched driving ———–——— JULY The 2010 Ford Glass Roof Mustang offers consumers convertible-like driving without the need for sunscreen, because its factory-installed CLUB MEETING panoramic glass roof filters 90 percent of the sun's heat-generating Friday, July 10 infrared (IR) rays and 96 percent of burn-causing ultraviolet (UV) rays. Phil Long Ford, Denver The UV-filtering capability of the new Mustang's fixed glass roof is Tufts & Wadsworth comparable to sunscreen lotion with a sun protection factor (SPF) of 2nd Floor Meeting Room approximately 50, which exceeds the dermatologist-recommended sunscreen strength of at least SPF-15. 7 PM to 8 PM The glass roof's ability to filter IR rays reduces heat load in the cabin BRING YOUR so that occupants remain comfortable while enjoying the sun. The re- MUSTANGS! flective glass also reduces energy used by the vehicle's air conditioner system while protecting the interior fabric from fading and deteriorat- ing. WE’RE CRUISING TO SONIC AFTER THE Good for the soul MEETING!

———–——— Sun-soaked cruising is the convertible and Glass Roof Mustang's top Phil Long Car Show appeal factor. Scientific studies show that increased exposure to sun- shine or bright light is therapeutic because it regulates the body's syn- Saturday, July 11 thesis of melatonin, a mood-regulating hormone that modulates the Phil Long Ford, Denver circadian cycle of sleep and wakefulness. Sunshine also triggers the body's conversion to active vitamin D, considered to be an effective Tufts & Wadsworth natural remedy for "the blues." 2nd Floor Meeting Room

Health experts caution that cool breezes in convertibles can mislead- 10 AM to 2 PM ingly mask the sun's harmful rays as occupants may not feel as hot as when they're stationary under the sun. RMMR—Thank you! By Mike Rhynard, Jr., DMC President Another Rocky Mountain Mustang Roundup is in the books. What a good time we had! Of course, Mother Nature had to throw us a curve in the form of a downpour during the scenic cruise, but once that was done, the weather was perfect for both the autocross and the show and shine, It was a great way to spend Father’s Day weekend.

I’d like to take a moment to offer my congratulations and thanks to our own Joe Dietz, Jr., who served as RMMR chair this year. Over the last year, Joe put in many hours of work, including numerous trips to Steamboat, preparing for this event. Coordinating the efforts of all of the vendors, sponsors, club representatives, city officials, etc., etc., is a huge task. To have the event go off as smoothly as it did was very im- pressive. Nice work, Joe! And thank you too, to all of our members that helped with the scenic cruise, and who worked at the autocross. I’m already looking forward to number 22! Membership Update Members Present at By Geri Durbin, DMC Membership Chair the June Meeting

THE BIG BOYS (& GIRLS) ARE BACK IN TOWN 55 members and 5 guests in attendance Have you ever wondered what an 8000 horsepower car sounds and feels like? If that statement intrigues you then you need to get out to Bandimere Speedway sometime the weekend of July 10-12 as the NHRA (National Hot Rod Association) rolls into town for the Mopar Parts Mile High Nationals. The Mile High Nationals will feature the July Birthdays professional categories of Top Fuel (dragsters), Funny Car, Pro Stock Car and Motorcycle and the sportsman cate- gories of Super Stock, Stock Eliminator, Super Comp and Super Gas. When the top fuel dragsters and funny cars launch off the starting line it literally shakes the ground and you can feel the power of the car in your chest. Addi- tionally, earplugs are a must. The Mile High Nationals kicks off the second half of the professional season and a grueling three consecutive weekends known as “The Western Swing”, beginning in Denver, traveling to Seattle, 7/3 Ron Fox and ending in Sonoma. The Denver event poses a special challenge as the 5,800 feet altitude at Bandimere affects everything from engine tune-ups to aerodynamics. No other event on the circuit comes even close as crews must 7/8 Nancy McCoy make changes to established power-making combinations and battle the lack of down force. The only thing they 7/9 David Stahl can refer to in their “bag ‘o tricks” is their data from prior years at Denver. Some lower budget teams elect to not race in Denver as the event here does have a tendency to eat up parts, a very expensive proposition. 7/11 Tammy Stirling 7/14 Kent Gloor I can’t remember how many years ago I attended my first Mile High Nationals. What I do remember is I fell in love 7/15 Abigail Nicholas with the funny cars. That year there was only one Mustang funny car on the tour driven by . Needless to say it became my favorite car as I had to remain true blue. Now there are several Mustang funny cars for one 7/19 Tim Thiessen to feast their eyes upon as they scream down the track. Mustang funny car drivers and sponsors include: John 7/26 Candace Loesby Force/Castrol GTX High Mileage Mustang; /Castrol GTX Mustang; /Auto Club of Southern California Mustang; Mike Neff/Ford Drive One Mustang; Robert Tasca III/Motocraft/Quick Lane Shelby 7/28 Flora Marsico Mustang; and Tim Wilkerson/Levi, Ray & Shoup Shelby Mustang. One exciting feature of professional drag racing is the ability to walk right up to a driver’s pit and watch his/her crew work on the car. However, while cruising the pits be prepared for the pre race warm up. There is nothing like the smell of nitro methane fuel and you will jump Belated Birthday when the driver whaps the throttle to seat the clutch. It is an experience you will never forget. Wishes 6/12 Ellen Ivener In closing I hope I have tweaked your interest in checking out the big boys (& girls) with the super big toys. Check out the schedule at Bandimere’s web site. Friday and Saturday include night racing where you can see the header flames shoot high into the air, and the evening concludes with fireworks. Sunday is eliminations. Next month I will 2009 Paid tell you about my experience five years ago as a crew member in a professional funny car pit at the Mile High Na- tionals. I have included in this newsletter a crossword puzzle for your enjoyment, however if you are not familiar Membership with this sport you might need to do some research. Until then keep enjoying your toy, your special Mustang.J 69 paid members/ families Final Extra Note: After accounting for ties, our own Tim Steenson is currently tied for 6th place in the Hot Rod division in the Club Clash series. Race Horses By Tim Steenson, DMC Newsletter Editor Friday, June 26th Bandimere Speedway held the third Club Clash of the 2009 season. After being rained out the first two times, it originally looked pretty bleak for number three, too. It was pouring rain at about 2 PM, and at 3:30 when the gates opened, it was still spitting at the speedway. But the weather cleared, then sun came out, and we actually got some racing in! Even with the threatening weather, we had a good turnout of racers: Jeff and Carrie Jacobucci, Wes Thornton, and your editor were all present, along with a few non-members that regularly race with us. As a group, we fared pretty well. Jeff made it to the second round, one of our non-member racers made it to the third round, and your editor made it to the fourth round. After accounting for ties, the Denver Mustang club is currently in 8th place in the points standings for 5 man team points. Due to the rainouts, Bandimere has added another Club Clash to the 2009 calendar. The additional race will be held on Friday, October 2nd. The next Club Clash will be Friday, July 31st. Come out and race with us, or at least come to cheer us on! Phil Long Ford Fest By Tim Steenson, DMC Newsletter Editor On Sunday, June 28th at Bandimere Speedway, Phil Long presented the 16th annual Phil Long Ford Fest, an all Ford Day on the mountain. There was a large selection of beautiful Ford cars on display, and Ford- powered bracket racing all day long, in addition to vendor booths. Of course, the Phil Long booth fea- tured several new models, along with six Mustangs, provided by Dave Jorgensen, Mark Gomez, Ken Laing, Jim Cosper, Wes Thornton and Mike Rhynard, Sr. Thanks go to these members for helping Phil Long by providing their case for the booth; by doing so they eliminated their cars from consideration for show trophies. It was nice to see Rich McCoy of our Kansas contingent in the staging lanes...rumor has it Nancy was at the show too, but I didn’t see her. It’s a long drive from Wakeeny to Morrison, and we’re always glad when they can make the trip!
