When professional bull rider Colby Yates decided to hang up his bull rope and chaps in August 2012 it was not a decision that was propelled by a significant injury or a particular event, the 32-year old Texas cowboy just realized that there was life beyond the arena. It was a decision that many questioned but ultimately many respected. Colby Yates was born and raised in a family of cattle ranchers and started his rodeo career at age 8. By age 18 he obtained his pro card and began competing in the PRCA circuit before joining the Professional Bull Riders Built Ford Tough Series permanently in 2006. In his 6 years on the PBR BFTS tour Yates won 3 events and his earnings topped out over half a million dollars. By 2011 he was juggling sponsorship requirements, competing in the BFTS series, and an emerging music career. Also in 2011, Yates won the Iron Cowboy competition at Cowboy Stadium and released his debut studio album “Right Amount of Renegade”. But there was a life beyond the arena, Colby’s wife Katie, his son Cutter, and his ranch outside of Sulphur Springs, Texas were also depending on him to not only provide for them, but to physically be able to be there for them; Yates has had more concussions that any other cowboy with a whopping 38 in his 14-year career. And so in August 2012 Colby Yates made the courageous decision to walk away from the sport he loved and turn his attention to his true priorities, his family, “I was burnt out, my head and my heart were at home and I just had to be there, it was a tough reality to bite down on though.

  • Tuff Hedeman
TUFF HEDEMAN TUFF HEDEMAN Before he even started school, Richard Neale “Tuff” Hedeman earned (literally) the nickname that would stick with him for life. According to Tuff, Tater Decker, a horse trainer and friend of the Hedeman family, began to call him “Tough Nut” after he slammed the boy‟s hand in the door of his pick-up. As the story goes, young Tuff never shed the first tear. “I was about 4 or 5 years old,” remembers Hedeman, “when he slammed my hand in the door. He nicknamed me „Tough Nut‟ and it was later shortened to Tuff.” So began the life of a legend. Hedeman grew up on the racetracks of west Texas, but quickly realized his true calling; the rodeo. As a boy, he won many junior rodeos and, in 1980, took the New Mexico High School Rodeo Bull Riding and All Around titles. His success continued the following year, when he was awarded the Team Roping and All Around titles. Upon graduation, Tuff attended Sul Ross State University, where he was a member of the rodeo team, competing in bronc riding, team roping, steer wrestling and, of course, bull riding. In 1983, Tuff turned pro and filled out his PRCA permit as a bronc rider. He developed a reputation for riding bulls that had never been ridden, with an all-or-nothing style that amazed rodeo fans. He often traveled with his fellow bull riders (and close friends) Lane Frost, Cody Lambert, Jim Sharp, Clint Branger and Ty Murray, to save on travel expenses. Over his career, he would qualify for 11 NFRs, winning two NFR titles.

DRAFT September 17, 2020 Contact: Seth Spillman, Chief Marketing Officer [email protected] (Office) (405) 478-2250 ext. 269 2020 Rodeo Hall of Fame Weekend Postponed Rodeo Hall of Fame Class of 2020, along with 2020 Tad Lucas Memorial Award and Ben Johnson Memorial Award recipients, to be honored in 2021 OKLAHOMA CITY — In support of the nationwide effort to slow the spread of COVID-19, the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum and Rodeo Historical Society (RHS) will postpone the 2020 Rodeo Hall of Fame Weekend. Originally scheduled for November 13–14, 2020, a decision on when the event will be rescheduled in 2021 is still to be determined. Updates will be posted on the Museum and RHS website at nationalcowboymuseum.org/rhs. “We continue to be creative and flexible in how we approach events in 2020, but given the size and logistics of Rodeo Hall of Fame Weekend, we believe the best decision is to postpone until circumstances allow us to properly honor these very deserving inductees and award winners,” said Natalie Shirley, Museum president. The 2020 Rodeo Hall of Fame Weekend inductees were chosen via popular vote by RHS membership. Inductees in both the Living and Deceased categories, as well as the Tad Lucas Memorial Award and Ben Johnson Memorial Award recipients, includes: LIVING - Ricky Bolin - Bobby W. “Hooter” Brown - Richard Neale “Tuff” Hedeman - Cody Lambert - Jerome Robinson - Bobby and Sid Steiner (father and son) DECEASED - John (1887 – 1973) and Thomas (1915 – 1981) Rhodes (father and son) - Jim W. Snively (1911 – 1998) In addition, each year the family of trick-riding legend Tad Lucas bestows the Tad Lucas Memorial Award upon a living female whose actions promote the values represented by Tad Lucas, while the Ben Johnson Memorial Award winner is chosen by committee each year to honor a living individual who represents the Western lifestyle as exemplified by screen and rodeo legend Ben Johnson.

Initially scheduled to be held in Longview February 27-28, the tour stop was relocated due to the impacts of the region’s recent historic winter storm. The PBR was last in Fort Worth in 2020, holding a premier series stop at Dickies Arena. Additionally, the greater Dallas-Fort Worth area is no stranger to PBR action, with Arlington hosting the 2020 PBR World Finals and the prestigious Global Cup in 2019 and 2020. Action in Fort Worth will get underway on Friday, February 26 and Saturday, February 27 at 8:00 p.m. CT. HISTORY IS MADE AT COWTOWN – While PBR’s elite Unleash The Beast was not initially scheduled to stop at Cowtown Coliseum, the tour’s rerouting now finds the league’s premier series travelling to one of the most iconic venues in Western sports, and one with deep roots in PBR history. In 1993, PBR held its first-ever PBR elite tour event at Cowtown Coliseum, with league co-founder Cody Lambert going a perfect 3-for-3 to win the event title. Alongside Lambert, Australian sensation Troy Dunn was the only other rider to be flawless at the historic event, also going 3-for-3.
