Ari Hoffman Dissertation Advisor: Professor Elisa New Professor Amanda Claybaugh This Year in Jerusalem: Israel and the Literary Quest for Jewish Authenticity This dissertation investigates how Israel is imagined as a literary space and setting in contemporary literature. Israel is a specific place with delineated borders, and is also networked to a whole galaxy of conversations where authenticity plays a crucial role. Israel generates authenticity in uniquely powerful ways because of its location at the nexus of the imagined and the concrete. While much attention has been paid to Israel as a political and ethnographic/ demographic subject, its appearance on the map of literary spaces has been less thoroughly considered.

After more than two decades of limited American aid since Israel declared its independence in 1948, the United States under Presidents Richard Nixon, Gerald Ford, Jimmy Carter, and Ronald Reagan dramatically increased its support for Israel in the wake of the October War of 1973.

  • After “Postmemory”: Coping with Holocaust Remembrance in Postmodern Hebrew Literature
AFTER “POSTMEMORY”: COPING WITH HOLOCAUST REMEMBRANCE IN POSTMODERN HEBREW LITERATURE YAEL SELIGER A DISSERTATION SUBMITTED TO THE FACULTY OF GRADUATE STUDIES IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY GRADUATE PROGRAM IN HUMANITIES YORK UNIVERSITY TORONTO, ONTARIO MARCH 2015 © YAEL SELIGER, 2015 Abstract This interdisciplinary study suggests that the time has come to pursue a new modality of Holocaust remembrance. It assumes that when we speak of “remembering” we are referring to acts of remembrance; with the exception of those who lived through the Holocaust, those of us who were not “there” cannot remember the actual events of the Holocaust. The study further contends that acts of Holocaust remembrance ought to be perceived as forms of coping with remembrance of the Holocaust. It also suggests that critical frameworks and narrative strategies developed in postmodern Hebrew literature – specifically the writings of Etgar Keret – offer a literary exemplar of coping with Holocaust remembrance. The articulation of the raison d’être for a paradigmatic shift in conceptualizing Holocaust remembrance is defined in the context of the general field of Holocaust representation. More specifically, the modality of coping with Holocaust remembrance is juxtaposed with an existing and prevalent conceptualization known to scholars and writers as “postmemory” – a structural framework of Holocaust remembrance applied to the second generation. Of special significance is the interlacing of the modality of coping with Holocaust remembrance with postmodern thinking. Foremost in this alignment with postmodernism is the acknowledgement that the events of the Holocaust destabilized Enlightenment- modern metaphysical faith in human rationalism and linearity of epistemological, ontological, scientific, and humanistic progress.

  • Playing Jewish Geography: Diaspora, Home, Nation
PLAYING JEWISH GEOGRAPHY: DIASPORA, HOME, NATION-STATE, AND ZIONISM IN CONTEMPORARY CANADIAN AND AMERICAN JEWISH FICTION AARON KREUTER A DISSERTATION SUBMITTED TO THE FACULTY OF GRADUATE STUDIES IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY GRADUATE PROGRAM IN ENGLISH YORK UNIVERSITY TORONTO, ONTARIO January 2020 © Aaron Kreuter, 2020 ii Abstract This dissertation explores fiction by American and Canadian Jewish authors that has Israel/Palestine as its setting or subject matter, analyzing them through a lens of diaspora studies in order to demonstrate how diaspora is an ethical alternative to the ethnic nationalism of Zionism. Theoretically, this project deploys thinkers of diaspora (Daniel and Jonathan Boyarin, George Steiner, Judith Butler) and world literature (Wai Chee Dimock, Rebecca Walkowitz) with historians and critics of Zionism and Israel/Palestine (Nur Masalha, Ali Abuminah, Steven Salaita, Ella Shohat, Yehouda Shenhav). The dissertation is also interested in how Zionist national time and diasporic time (as theorized by Eyal Chowers and others) compete within and without the project’s archive of primary texts. The works of diasporic fiction this project unpacks are written by Theodor Herzl, Leon Uris, Philip Roth, Ayelet Tsabari, and David Bezmozgis. Where the first two chapters interrogate canonical texts by established American (and Austrian) authors, the second two chapters analyze contemporary texts by Canadian authors in the beginning or middle of their careers. Throughout the dissertation, I develop the concept of diasporic heteroglossia—a combining of the work of Daniel and Jonathan Boyarin with the literary theory of Mikhail Bakhtin—which can be defined as fiction’s unique ability to contain multiple, diasporic voices that resist a national, in this case Zionist, center.
