Abstract: The polypore Bridgeoporus nobilissimus produces large perennial basidiocarps on large diameter Abies stumps, snags and trees in coniferous forests of the Pacific Northwest. Despite the size and persistence of the basidiocarps, they are rarely observed, making the conservation of this species a concern. We determined that a genetic marker for this fungus could be detected in DNA extracted from wood cores taken from trees hosting basidiocarps. We then tested 105 trees and stumps that did not host B. nobilissimus basidiocarps in plots surrounding B. nobilissimus conks, and 291 trees and stumps in randomly located plots in four stands that contained at least one B. nobilissimus basidiocarp. We found that trees of all sizes throughout all of the stands hosted B. -

Vogt INTRODUCTION Ecosystem analysis has established nutrient cycling as an important area of ecology involving biological, chemical, and geological interactions. Studying the flow of elements through ecosystems provides us with a tool for understand- ing the functioning of ecosystems. For example, if an ecosystem component has a rapid flux of elements through it, or if it stores large amounts of an element, that component is clearly important in ecosystem function. Nutrient cycling strongly influences ecosystem productivity since nutrient flows are closely linked with transfers of carbon and water. In addition nutrient cycling may also affect succession and evolution in forest ecosystems. Various distinct processes are involved in nutrient cycling, such as de- composition, weathering, uptake, leaching, and so on. Each is a precursor to another and the flow of nutrients follows a set of interconnected steps. Al- though the basic nutrient cycling processes are common to all ecosystems, the rates of the processes vary from one forest ecosystem to another. This varia- tion plays an important role in forest succession and evolution. For example, long-term foliage retention by conifers may allow a species to exist where only a marginal nutrient supply is available from the soil. Nitrogen-fixing species, on the other hand, can occupy sites where nitrogen availability is low because they can provide their own nitrogen. An understanding of nutrient cycling is thus essential for the rational management of forest ecosystems. -

Sampling of insect communities is very challenging and for reliable interpretation of results the effects of different sam- pling protocols and data processing on the results need to be fully understood. We compared three different commonly used methods for sampling forest beetles, freely hanging flight-intercept (window) traps (FWT), flight-intercept traps attached to trunks (TWT) and pitfall traps placed in the ground (PFT), in Scots pine dominated boreal forests in eastern Finland. Using altogether 960 traps, forming 576 sub-samples, at 24 study sites, 59760 beetles belonging to 814 species were collected over a period of a month. All of the material was identified to species, with the exception of a few species pairs, to obtain representative data for analyses. Four partly overlapping groups were used in the analyses: (1) all, (2) saproxylic, (3) rare and (4) red-listed species. In terms of the number of species collected TWTs were the most effective for all species groups and the rarer species the species group composed of (groups 1-2-3-4) the larger were the differences between the trap types. In particular, the TWTs caught most red-listed species. However, when sample sizes were standardized FWTs and TWTs caught similar number of species of all species groups. -

The Complexity of Morchella Systematics: A Case of the Yellow Morel from Israel Segula Masaphy,* Limor Zabari, Doron Goldberg, and Gurinaz Jander-Shagug A B C Abstract Individual morel mushrooms are highly polymorphic, resulting in confusion in their taxonomic distinction. In particu- lar, yellow morels from northern Israel, which are presumably Morchella esculenta, differ greatly in head color, head shape, ridge arrangement, and stalk-to-head ratio. Five morphologically distinct yellow morel fruiting bodies were genetically character- ized. Their internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region within the nuclear ribosomal DNA and partial LSU (28S) gene were se- quenced and analyzed. All of the analyzed morphotypes showed identical genotypes in both sequences. A phylogenetic tree with retrieved NCBI GenBank sequences showed better fit of the ITS sequences to D E M. crassipes than M. esculenta but with less than 85% homology, while LSU sequences, Figure 1. Thus, the first part of my thesis involved creating a statistically based diet classification based on a literature compilation of stomach content data for 139 terrestrial mammals. I observed that diet is far more complex than a traditional herbivore-omnivore-carnivore classification, which masks important feeding specializations. To solve this problem I proposed a new classification scheme that emphasizes the primary resource in a given diet (Chapter 3). -
