G. Sebald’s debut on the anglophone literary stage: One of the questions we asked him was, “Which category would you like your book to be in?” And Max [Sebald] said, “Oh, I’d like all the categories. I also study how these laws and policies have been challenged by more hospitable and humane attitudes among activists, artists and culture producers as well as philosophers. In order to do this, I focus on a series of events and debates leading up to the most recent amendment of the French Code of Entry and Sojourn of Foreigners and of Right to Asylum (Code de l’entrée et du séjour des étrangers et du droit d’asile, abbreviated CESEDA). Specifically, I focus on those narratives within immigrant literature that address the lived experiences and consequent identity formations of forced migrants: individuals, families, and communities displaced from their country or region of origin and forced to inhabit spaces with which they often have no prior familiarity. This literature challenges the idea that a spectrum of lived experiences can be restricted to a codified US nationalism and contained within an identity or set of identities that are uniquely “American.” Literary studies can advance this important topic alongside the interdisciplinary fields of migration studies, international law, and sociology, and a study of forced migration narratives can help to broaden the definition of cosmopolitanism to one that includes an individual, family, or community living inside the nation-state, but whose cultural ties transcend any notion of defined borders or a single national belonging.

    Organising Mobility: A Sociological Investigation of the Operations of an International Airport Kenneth William Parker Bachelor of Social Sciences (Sociology) (Hons) Centre of Social Change Research School of Humanities and Human Services Queensland University of Technology Submitted for the Attainment of the Degree Doctor of Philosophy 2005 Abstract Mobility on a global scale as a product of increased interconnectivity has been a subject of interest for writers working within various disciplines in the social sciences and beyond. Few accounts, however, examine how mobility is performed by the operations of international airports. Through data acquired in interviews conducted with the management of an international airport administration, this project adds to existing accounts of mobility with an examination of the strategies, techniques, and performances that allow an international airport to operate, and which in turn, enable transportation worldwide. To analyse an airport as an organisation, this project employs a model advocated in John Law’s (1994) influential study Organizing Modernity. Law’s (1994) framework focuses attention on the often hidden performances within organisations that strain towards governance, regulation, durability, and routine. Incorporating Law’s (1994) framework, this project illuminates aspects of an airport’s operation in four thematic chapters, ‘Ordering’; ‘Communication’; ‘Materials’; and ‘Space’. Overall, this project depicts the international airport as a complex socio-technical assemblage that requires multiple, varied, and interwoven ordering performances to operate effectively. Mountains have been moved, new islands made in the sea, and vast swaths of land have been cleared all to make the airports and the efforts and investment to make them possible dream of flight possible. The large scale building of international will continue for the foreseeable future as air passenger numbers continue to rise. But what happens when the airport is unused? The default answer seems to be to clear the site and redevelop on a tabula rasa. The history of the site is ignored and the building new development. While designers like Peter Latz have explored stock and infrastructure carelessly demolished to make way for the idea of reusing post-industrial landscapes like steel plants while preserving their infrastructure, not much thought has been given to issues because of their economic importance, role as transportation the post-airport condition. The re-use of airports presents unique and infrastructure hubs, enormous buildings, substantial infra- - structure and vast spaces. The current pattern of completely wip ing away the airport and starting over from scratch is broken. The airport requires special attention and consideration from designers in order to successfully deal with the aforementioned issues.
