Per Paul Kantner, nello spazio e ritorno Ecco, invece di scrivere un epitaffio per David Bowie, il cui ultimo album, Blackstar, è un capolavoro, lo sto scrivendo per Paul Kantner, 74 anni, morto il 28 gennaio dopo essere stato virtualmente dimenticato per gli ultimi quarant’anni. Gli affrettati coccodrilli pubblicati su di lui, almeno sui quotidiani americani, lo ricordano solo come il leader dei Jefferson Airplane che dopo aver avuto successo con Grace Slick che cantava Somebody to Love e White Rabbit ha fondato il San Francisco Sound con Volunteers of America, si è lanciato in strane collaborazioni dalle quali è emerso Wooden Ships, l’inno di chi semplicemente non ne vuole sapere più niente di tutta la baracca. Poi qualcuno gli ha detto che se non mandava qualche strizzatina d’occhio al pubblico la baracca l’avrebbe chiusa davvero. Allora lui ha cambiato il nome al gruppo in Jefferson Starship e nel 1975 è entrato in classifica con Red Octopus. Dopo sono venute rotture e riunioni, cause legali e patteggiamenti a non finire, il rifiuto di seguire gli Starship (senza più Jefferson) sulla via del rock da stadio di We Built This City e infine l’ultimo disco dell’ultima incarnazione dei Jefferson Starship, Tree of Liberty, una compilation di folk songs e di vecchie, care, “canzoni di protesta” | 1 Jefferson Airplane. Per Paul Kantner, nello spazio e ritorno (inclusa Chimes of Freedom di Bob Dylan, di cui assolutamente nessuno si è accorto. Perché ricordare dunque questo vecchio hippy sfiatato, che nel 2009 ha portato in giro gli ultimi sopravvissuti dei suoi vari gruppi in una tournée tristemente chiamata Heroes of Woodstock (bisogna pur campare), che avrebbe voluto incidere il suo ultimo disco a Cuba e che nei suoi ultimi concerti leggeva componimenti di poeti rivoluzionari dell’America Latina a un pubblico che invece voleva gli eroi di Woodstock? Non lo prendevano sul serio neanche i collaboratori più stretti.
