  • Humor, Literacy and Trauma in Chicano Culture
Humor, Literacy and Chicano Culture Carl Gutiérrez-Jones, Ph.D. English Department University of California, Santa Barbara For various and complicated reasons, race and ethnic studies in the United States have yet to explore fully the cultural work with humor undertaken by artists of color. Despite growing interest in Mikhail Bakhtin’s work on carnivalesque humor, and despite considerable attention devoted to “trickster” figures, the study of multicultural texts has produced readings that invite, yet frequently do not pursue, a sustained treatment of humor and its significance.1 Given their struggle to win legitimacy for their burgeoning fields, it is understandable that some race and ethnic studies scholars would have second thoughts about committing themselves to terrain that might in itself be used by detractors to declare the frivolity and superficiality of multicultural studies. Lost in this process are the rich ways in which the art builds on a genealogy of critical humor (extending from figures like Cervantes and Erasmus) in order to present searching critiques of western rationalism.2 I would suggest that race and ethnic studies has developed this complicated relation with humor in part because the cultural and political significance of race and ethnicity has been so intimately tied to the discourse of the law, a discourse that marshals authority and power by striving to speak from a position of transcendent rationality.3 Understanding that race and ethnic communities have been profoundly invested in legal interpretation and its ramifications, one can see why many politically engaged artists, scholars and audiences might argue that the work of enfranchisement strongly encourages the development of cultural artifacts that adopt a weighty moral seriousness befitting the claims of legally adjudicated injury they describe.

  • Tiki Oasis 2013: Friday
Tiki Oasis 2013: Friday A few weeks ago we headed south to San Diego for Tiki Oasis. Tiki Oasis is a tiki themed weekender that happens every year near the end of August. The event starts on Thursday night at Bali Hai restaurant at Shelter Island for the official pre-party. The actual event starts on Friday afternoon which is when we always arrive. The event takes place at The Crowne Plaza hotel. The host hotel is expensive and hard to get into so we always stay at a hotel cross the street, The Kings Inn. It is a super cute hotel with a kidney shaped pool, beautiful landscaping, and two restaurants. The rooms are very clean and the prices are reasonable. They have a free shuttle to and from the host hotel that makes it really easy to go back and forth. We first arrived to the host hotel during "sip and shop" hours. This was my first time experiencing sip and shop. Basically the rum sponsors set up booths in between the other vendors and give out free mixed drinks and shots to everyone. It was fab! We didn't actually get any shopping done but boy oh boy did we get some drinking done. By the time the sun went down we were ready to party. Tiki Oasis is a unique event in that every year they have a different theme. The theme is taken very seriously. They book bands to fit the theme, have themed symposiums, themed decorations, themed merch and themed contests. The theme this year was Hulabilly: part Americana, part Hawaiiana, Hulabilly is an American music style derived from the blending of Rockabilly and Haole Hawaiian music.

  • WDAM Radio's History of Elvis Presley
Listeners Guide To WDAM Radio’s History of Elvis Presley This is the most comprehensive collection ever assembled of Elvis Presley’s “charted” hit singles, including the original versions of songs he covered, as well as other artists’ hit covers of songs first recorded by Elvis plus songs parodying, saluting, or just mentioning Elvis! More than a decade in the making and an ongoing work-in-progress for the coming decades, this collection includes many WDAM Radio exclusives – songs you likely will not find anywhere else on this planet. Some of these, such as the original version of Muss I Denn (later recorded by Elvis as Wooden Heart) and Liebestraum No. 3 later recorded by Elvis as Today, Tomorrow And Forever) were provided by academicians, scholars, and collectors from cylinders or 78s known to be the only copies in the world. Once they heard about this WDAM Radio project, they graciously donated dubs for this archive – with the caveat that they would never be duplicated for commercial use and restricted only to musicologists and scholarly purposes. This collection is divided into four parts: (1) All of Elvis Presley’s charted U S singles hits in chronological order – (2) All of Elvis Presley’s charted U S and U K singles, the original versions of these songs by other artists, and hit versions by other artists of songs that Elvis Presley recorded first or had a cover hit – in chronological order, along with relevant parody/answer tunes – (3) Songs parodying, saluting, or just mentioning Elvis Presley – mostly, but not all in chronological order – and (4) X-rated or “adult-themed” songs parodying, saluting, or just mentioning Elvis Presley.

Title of Collection: Grand Emporium Audiovisual Collection Reference Code: US-MoKcUMS-MSA38 Repository: Marr Sound Archives UMKC Miller Nichols Library 800 E. 51st Street Kansas City, MO 64110 Creator: Grand Emporium Naber, Roger Palmer, C. Herb Administrative/Biographical History: In 1979, Roger Naber started booking bands on the side while maintaining a day job for the postal service in Kansas City. Attracting marquee performers to local venues such as the Lone Star, the Uptown Theater, the National Guard Armory, Harling's Upstairs and King Henry's Feast (later known as Parody Hall), he built a rapport with the music world and a reputation as a hardworking promoter. In 1980, he co-founded the Kansas City Blues Society, galvanizing the local music scene during twelve years as the organization's president. His tenacity made him one of Kansas City's most respected promoters, but it was his genuine affinity for musicians that brought success to places like the Grand Emporium. Naber and business partner George Myers bought the Grand Emporium in July 1985, transforming the erstwhile restaurant into a premier destination for live music. From show flyers doubling as wallpaper to a jukebox stocked with old 45s to the makeshift kitchen where "Amazing" Grace Harris served barbecue and soul food, the intimate midtown barroom offered common ground for patron and performer. It was here musicians walked the bar during a guitar solo or took the show outside to Main Street for a song; big name stars were known to drop by for a slice of local flavor after playing bigger, more impersonal area venues; and local legends, such as musician and dancer Speedy Huggins, were fixtures on the scene, cutting up the dance floor and sitting in with bands.

El Vez is the Latin sensation that is sweeping the Nation and the world, following successful tours in Australia, Germany, Spain, Norway, Holland, Austria, England, France, Belgium, Canada and more. A modern multicultural hybrid of Americana and Mexicano, he is more than entertainment, he is a thinking man’s Elvis, a post-modern King with a Latin twist, the Chicano experience presented and told through the songs of Elvis. Imagine Ceasar Chavez fronting a Punk Rock band, Liberace teaching Chicano Studies, Tom Jones singing about the Virgin de Guadalupe, throw in multiple costumes changes, dancing back up singers and a rocking band and you have imagined El Vez! El Vez is like a Jukebox exploded and put back together again. The Music mixes and remixes last centuries music, matching and contrasting various genre and styles, 5 different tunes may find their way into one Elvis song, becoming an EL VEZ song. The subject matter is Elvis through a latino looking glass. "In the Ghetto" becomes "En El Barrio", "Suspicious Minds" become "Immigration Time". Elvis' logo's like TCB...become "Taking Care of Business" an ode to the undocumented workers of America. Mixed in with El Vez originals (i.e.; the zapatistas in chiapas, safe sex) it becomes a musicophiles history dream. • Mark Duffett, University of Chester, UK
. Volume 9, Issue 2 November 2012 Boosting Elvis: A content analysis of editorial stories from one fan club magazine Mark Duffett, University of Chester, UK Abstract There is a tendency in fan studies research to ignore the offline and contingent activities and concerns of organized fan cultures. After introducing the community of English-speaking Elvis Presley fan clubs, this article presents findings from a study of 240 editorial stories from one fan club magazine written over the course of a decade. Results show that under the banner of supporting the memory of their hero, fans participate in a diverse and vibrant living culture and they pursue a wide variety of activities. In order to understand their practice of ‘boosting’ (Barbas 2008), the empirical results are framed with a discussion of Durkheim’s (1912) theory of religion. I argue that keeping Elvis’s memory alive, for fans, means actively maintaining the magnitude of the fan base. Keywords: Elvis Presley, fandom, living culture, boosterism, Durkheim, religion. Introduction For over twenty years, fan studies have been a way to explore audience participation with a media text… The evolution of fan studies, however, has reached a critical moment: traditional studies of media fandom in the digital age seem inadequately equipped to describe and analyse what I call the ‘philosophy of playfulness’ we can observe in fans’ use of today’s digital technology. (Booth 2010, 1-2) What are the specific, historical concerns of fan communities? In the 1990s, various ethnographers explored such questions.1 Since then, with few exceptions, book-length accounts of offline fan communities have been much less prominent.

  • Parody As a Borrowing Practice in American Music, 1965–2015
Parody as a Borrowing Practice in American Music, 1965–2015 A dissertation submitted to the Graduate School of the University of Cincinnati in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Division of Composition, Musicology, and Theory of the College-Conservatory of Music by John P. Thomerson BM, State University of New York at Fredonia, 2008 MM, University of Louisville, 2010 Committee Chair: bruce d. mcclung, PhD ABSTRACT Parody is the most commonly used structural borrowing technique in contemporary American vernacular music. This study investigates parody as a borrowing practice, as a type of humor, as an expression of ethnic identity, and as a response to intellectual trends during the final portion of the twentieth century. This interdisciplinary study blends musicology with humor studies, ethnic studies, and intellectual history, touching on issues ranging from reception history to musical meaning and cultural memory. As a structural borrowing technique, parody often creates incongruity—whether lyrical, stylistic, thematic, evocative, aesthetic, or functional—within a recognized musical style. Parodists combine these musical incongruities with other comic techniques and social conventions to create humor. Parodists also rely on pre-existing music to create, reinforce, and police ethnic boundaries, which function within a racialized discourse through which parodists often negotiate ethnic identities along a white-black binary. Despite parody’s ubiquity in vernacular music and notwithstanding the genre’s resonance with several key themes from the age of fracture, cultivated musicians have generally parody. The genre’s structural borrowing technique limited the identities musicians could perform through parodic borrowings. This study suggests several areas of musicological inquiry that could be enriched through engagement with parody, a genre that offers a vast and largely unexplored repertoire indicating how musical, racial, and cultural ideas can circulate in popular discourse.
