ADULT FAITH FORMATION Continuing religious education for adults striving to grow in their faith The Abrahamic Covenant, part 2

We left off last week talking of Abraham’s great faith, but also his missteps in obeying God. This week we begin with God’s words to Abraham, “Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Mori′ah, and offer him there as a burnt offering upon one of the mountains of which I shall tell you” (Genesis 22:2). This is, on its face, an incredible thing to demand of someone. Abraham had already shown that he struggled with God’s commands, siring an illegitimate son. Now God was demanding his only son, the son he had spent his whole life hoping, and praying, and begging the Lord for. What was Abraham going to do?

Immediately, without arguing with God, without compromising or attempting to make a deal, Abraham takes his son and sets out for the area of Moriah. After three days they get to the mountain, and head up it to make a sacrifice, Isaac carrying the wood on his back. Abraham goes as far as to tie up his son and pull out the knife, before an angel of the Lord stops him. Abraham is commended for his great faith, and the Lord makes a covenant with him, “By myself I have sworn, says the Lord, because you have done this, and have not withheld your son, your only son, I will indeed bless you, and I will multiply your descendants as the stars of heaven and as the sand which is on the seashore. And your descendants shall possess the gate of their enemies, and by your descendants shall all the nations of the earth bless themselves, because you have obeyed my voice” (Genesis 22:16-18). All three of the promises are raised to covenants. The first two, part of partially fulfilled promises by man, will be partially fruitful. Abraham will become the ancestor of a great nation, Israel, but for 500 years this nation will sojourn as slaves in Egypt. And kings will spring from his loins one day, but this kingdom will not last long and suffer internal strife during its time. However the third and final covenant, fulfilled in complete and absolute faith, the first response of man to God in complete filial obedience, will be fulfilled perfectly and eternally. All nations will be blessed and have been blessed by Abraham’s descendant, the Son of God, Jesus Christ.

In fact, the whole history of Genesis 22 is a foreshadowing of Christ’s Passion. Abraham goes to sacrifice his only son, as God the Father would give up His only son in atonement for all of our sins. Isaac, in willing obedience to his father, carries the wood for his sacrifice up the mountain, as Jesus would later carry His wooden Cross up Calvary (in fact, it was the same mountain, as Moriah was the hill land on which Jerusalem would later be settled, and Solomon would build the temple exactly where Abraham offered Isaac (this is traditionally known to be the place Adam is buried as well)). It even takes them three days for them to journey to Moriah, as Christ would lie in the tomb for three days. There is a very interesting line in the chapter where Abraham says one of the most prophetic things in all of Scripture (which is saying something), “God will provide himself the lamb for a burnt offering my son” (Genesis 22:8). (Depending where you put the comma in that sentence, it can be taken to mean God will provide the sacrifice, or that God will provide Himself as a sacrifice.) At the last second, as the angel stays Abraham’s hand, he sees a lamb whose horns are stuck in a thicket, as Christ, the sacrificial Lamb of God, would later be crowned with thorns. God provides for Himself the sacrifice on that day, as one day centuries later He would provide Himself as the sacrifice for all the world.

Abraham and Sarah were finally gifted a son, just as God Sacrificial Ram in the Thicket: promised! Abraham loved Isaac, but still loved God more. God asked Abraham to sacrifice Isaac, and Abraham obeyed. He brought Isaac up the mountain, and was about to kill him on an altar to the Lord. But an Angel stopped him! - the Angel recognized Abraham and Isaac’s obedience, and provided an- other sacrifice! A ram was found in the thicket, and they sacri- ficed that ram instead.

And the angel of the Lord called to Abraham a second time from heaven and said, “By myself I have sworn, declares the Lord, because you have done this and have not withheld your son, your only son, I will surely bless you, and I will surely multiply your offspring as the stars of heaven and as the sand that is on the seashore. And your offspring shall possess the gate of his enemies, and in your offspring shall all the nations of the earth be blessed, because you have obeyed my voice.” Genesis 22:15-18

Isaac grew up to marry Rebekah, whom he loved. And they both loved God. She bore twins, Jacob and Esau. Even though Esau was the older of the two brothers, and was due the birthright, Jacob tricked Isaac into giving it to him. So Jacob earned Isaac’s inheritance.

SAINTS OF THE WEEK Sunday, May 2: St. Jose Maria Rubio—Priest St. Jose Maria Rubio was born to a poor farming family in Dalías, Spain on July 22, 1864. After feel- ing called to the priesthood he entered the minor seminary in 1876 and then continued his studies at major seminary in Grenada. Following ordination he served as a parish priest in Chinchón and Estremera. Jose made a pilgrimage to the Holy Land in 1906 and then became a Jesuit. He was known for his gift as a preacher, leading many to conversion and earning him the nickname “Apostle of Madrid.” He also showed great concern for the poor, caring for them spiritually and materially.

Monday, May 3: St. Philip—Apostle St. Philip was born in Bethsaida in Galilee, the same town as Ss. Peter and Andrew. He was a follower of St. John the Baptist who began following Christ after the Baptist pointed Him out as the Lamb of God and when Jesus asked him to follow Him. Philip was responsible for introducing Nathaniel to Jesus. He was present at the miracle of the loaves and was the apostle who informed Jesus that they didn’t have enough money to feed everyone. We see Philip again in John 12 when he introduces some Greeks to our Lord. Dur- ing the Last Supper, Philip asks Jesus to show them the Father. According to tradition, the saint preached in Greece, Syria and Phrygia and was crucified upside down during the reign of Emperor Domitian. Tuesday, May 4: St. of Tarsus— and Martyr St. Pelagia was born to a noble pagan family in Tarsus, in the late third century. She was ar- ranged to be married to one of Emperor Diocletian’s son’s, but did not wish to proceed. She met Bishop Clino and was baptized a Christian. When Diocletian’s son approached her about marriage, she informed him that she was a Christian and devoted herself to Christ. The son then killed himself. Pelagia was turned in to authorities by her own mother and was brought before Diocletian who asked her to renounce her faith and marry another one of his sons. She refused and was burned to death.

Wednesday, May 5: Bl. Edmund Ignatius Rice—Confessor Bl. Edmund Rice was born in Wescourt, Ireland on June 1, 1762. He began working at his uncle’s import-export business at age seventeen and later inherited the business when his uncle passed away. Edmund got married and had a daughter, but his wife passed away two years later. He felt a calling to the religious life and contemplated becoming a monk. At the encouragement of the Bishop of Waterford, Edmund sold his business and began oper- ating a school for the poor youth in his city. From this one school sprang up a religious congregation, the Con- gregation of the Brothers of the Christian Schools, or Christian Brothers. Numerous schools for poor youth were opened up in several countries during Edmund’s life. Thursday, May 6: Bl. Anna Rosa Gattorno—Widow Bl. Anna Rosa was born to a wealthy family in Genoa, Italy on October 14, 1831. She married Gerolamo Custo in 1852 and had three children. Her husband passed away in 1958 and Anna began to feel called to the religious life. She took vows of poverty, chastity and obedience and became a Franciscan tertiary. Anna became president of the Pious Union of the New Ursuline Daughters of Holy Mary Immaculate, and revised their rule. At the en- couragement of Pope Pius IX she founded the Institute of the Daughters of Saint Anne, Mother of Mary Im- maculate in Piacenza, Italy on December 8, 1866 to care for the sick and poor. By the time of her death approxi- mately 368 houses had been established across multiple countries. Friday, May 7: St. John of Beverly—Bishop St. John was born to a noble family in Harpham, England sometime during the seventh century. As a youth he studied under Archbishop Theodore of Canterbury. Following his education he be- came a Benedictine monk and resided at of St. Hilda's monastery in Whitby. John was appointed Bishop of Hexham on August 25, 687 and was later named Bishop of York. In 717 he resigned his see and retired to a monastery he had founded, Beverly Abbey. He was known for his preach- ing and miracles. Saturday, May 8: St. Maria Magdalen of Canossa—Virgin St. Maria Magdalen was born to a wealthy family in Verona, Italy on March 1, 1774. Her father, the Marquis of Canossa, passed away when she was just three years old, and her mother left the palace to marry another man. Maria was placed under the care of her uncle. When she was 15 years old she felt called to the religious life. She lived for almost a year as a cloistered Carmelite, but felt a different calling. Maria moved out of the convent and began to invite poor girls into her home. She also worked with the sick in hospitals and opened schools for poor girls. From these charitable efforts arose the Congregation of the Canossian Daughters of Charity. FORMATION SCHEDULE LECTOR SCHEDULE

STEWARDSHIPSTEWARDSHIP OFOF OUROUR BECOME A PARISHIONER TREASURES Church membership is an obligation of discipleship and love TREASURES that derives from being united with Christ. At the Cathedral, active membership is a requirement for the celebration of a marriage or baptism, for one to be eligible to be a Godparent or Conformation sponsor, and for special benefits such as tuition subsidy at a Catholic school. There are certain minimum re- quirements for parish membership called the precepts of the Church. The following are three of those precepts and how we look upon them in relation to parish membership.

ATTENDANCE AT WEEKLY MASS. The first precept of the Church requires the faithful to participate in the Eucharistic celebration when the Christian community gathers together on APRIL 25, 2021 the day commemorating the Resurrection of the Lord (CCC #2042) and on holy days of obligation (CCC #2043).
