ASSEMBLY OF CANONICAL ORTHODOX BISHOPS OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA This is the day of resurrection. Let us be illumined by the feast. Let us embrace each other. Let us call "brothers" even those that hate us, and forgive all by the resurrection, and so let us cry: Christ is Risen from the Dead! (Doxastikon of Pascha) Pascha 2014 To the Reverend Priests and Deacons, the Monks and Nuns, the Presidents and Members of Parish Councils, the Day, Afternoon, and Church Schools, the Members of Philanthropic Organizations, the Youth and Youth Workers, and the entire Orthodox Christian Family in North and Central America Beloved Brothers and Sisters in Christ, In the name of the Risen Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, we greet you with the salvific and vibrant message of Holy Pascha: Christ is Risen! Truly He is Risen! Together, as one family, we have completed the spiritual journey of Great Lent. Standing on Golgotha with the Most-blessed Theotokos and John the Evangelist, we have witnessed the Author of creation nailed to the Cross. With boldness and profound faith, together with Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus, we have dared to touch the life-giving Body of our Lord. And with the Myrrh-bearing Women, we have received the eternal peace and experienced the deafening silence of the Cenotaph of Jesus Christ. Through the Holy Resurrection of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, humanity, along with the rest of creation, has been liberated and transformed. Indeed, we no longer speak about a world that is estranged from God since creation has been delivered from the bondage of corruption into the glorious liberty of the children of God (Romans 8: 20-21). Once frail and mortal, humanity is now a spring of vigor in and for the world. Therefore, we are all called not only to come receive the Light, but to also embrace our neighbors as brother and sister, sharing with them the Light of Christ that illumines all. With heartfelt paternal love, we pray that this blessed Paschal Season illumines and invigorates your hearts and minds, and that your families experience the eternal joy of the Holy Resurrection. Christ is Risen! Truly He is Risen! The Members of the Assembly of Canonical Orthodox Bishops of North and Central America Statement on the One-Year Anniversary of the Bishops Abducted in Syria 1. We, the Hierarchs of the Assembly of Canonical Orthodox Bishops of the United States of America, representing millions of Orthodox Christians, express our grave concern over the escalation of unrest and ongoing violence in countries throughout the Middle East, especially in Egypt, Iraq and Syria. 2. Our Assembly denounces any and all attacks—whether by means of violence, kidnapping, torture or killing—on all fellow human beings, irrespective of their race, ethnic origin, and religion. Moreover, we deplore the destruction of all places of worship or their forced conversion from their original intent. 3. We are especially disheartened at the inexcusable indifference and unjustifiable inaction of local and national governments, which have failed to protect the Christian population in these regions. We are also gravely troubled that representatives of the ancient Christian communities in Syria are not included in the peace and reconciliation process. Christians in Iraq, Egypt, and Syria have peacefully coexisted with people of all faiths in the region for two thousand years. As such, they must be respected and included in all decisions toward social and political justice. 4. One year ago, on April 22, 2013, the Greek Orthodox Metropolitan Boulos Yazigi (brother of His Beatitude Patriarch John X of Antioch) and the Syriac Orthodox Archbishop Yohanna Ibrahim, both of Aleppo, Syria were kidnapped by Islamist extremists during a joint philanthropic mission in the region. With sorrowful hearts we recognize a growing lack of interest on the part of civil authorities to assist in the recovery of the two Christian leaders. We encourage all people of good conscience to communicate with their elected officials and ask them to assist in the effort to find and retrieve the two bishops. We implore the Holy Great-Martyr Saint George, the patron of Christians of the Middle East and upon the eve of whose Feast the Hierarchs were kidnapped, to intercede for their salvation and safe return. Moreover, we appeal to the world’s 2.2 billion Christians, as well as to all people of faith and good will, and ask them to keep the two bishops in their daily thoughts and prayers. We also ask the Orthodox Christian faithful of our Assembly’s region to offer a special petition during the Great Litany of all divine services during this 40-day Season of Pascha. Before the petition commemorating the Most Holy Mother of God, we ask that the following petition be included: For the safety of Metropolitan Paul and Archbishop John and for their return to their communities, let us pray to the Lord. The Members of the Assembly of Canonical Orthodox Bishops of the United States of America The Diocese of New York and New Jersey presents a free Small Parish Forum to be held in Byesville, Ohio. The Diocese of the Midwest and the Archdiocese of Western Pennsylvania will host a Small Parish Forum at Christ the Savior Church here July 10-12, 2014, visit www.ocadwpa.org/smallparishforum.html Titled “Help, Hope, Stability and Identity,” the forum will cater to the numerous “small” parishes in the two dioceses. Workshops and presentations will examine ways to determine realistic goals toward which parishes with memberships of 50 or less souls can work, based on their respective regions’ economics and demographics and their unique talents and strengths. Participants will learn how their parishes can achieve stability, build a positive self-image, and accept their calling to live a life in Christ without necessarily becoming “big.” For parishes prepared and desiring to grow, fresh ideas adapted and relevant to the realities of small churches will prove invaluable. Headed by Joe Kormos, Parish Development Ministry Leader for the Archdiocese of Western Pennsylvania, the forum’s planning committee includes Archpriest Daniel Rentel, Priest Stephen Frase, Ann Marie Mecera, John Fedorko, and Cathy Vrugitz.

Because such is their calling. They promote those branches of science and culture to which they have dedicated themselves. On the other hand, there are people who are not drawn so much by intellectual or visible progress, as much as by the acquisition of inner perfection. They strive for righteousness and with this aim they become moks or nuns. Terrestrial life does little to promote spiritual perfection and rather hinders it. As the Evan- gelist St, John the Theologian explains; social life is poisoned by a triple evil: “For all that is in the world; the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father but is of the world” Therefore he teaches further “Do not love the world or the things in the world” (1 John 2:15-16).

  • Putin Claims to Be the Defender of Christians, Jews and Muslims in Syria
Putin claims to be the defender of Christians, Jews and Muslims in Syria. What about “the West”? By Willy Fautré at the 3rd Archon Conference on religious freedom in the Middle East (Washington) HRWF (07.12.2017) – Putin has recently and openly upgraded his support to the return of Christians, Jews and Muslims in Syria. He has also promised to participate in the reconstruction of the country. He has mentioned the work of a special task force including members of the Russian Orthodox Church and the Roman Catholic Church, who are compiling a catalogue of churches destroyed in Syria with a view to their restoration. The question is “Will the US, the EU and the heads of its member states raise their voices to pledge they will participate in the reconstruction of the safe parts of the country, rebuild and restore churches, community buildings and schools so that Syrian refugees will want to back home or … will they leave Putin reaping the gratitude of the Syrian people ?” The influence and the credibility of the EU in the region today and tomorrow is at stake in this matter. Patriarch of Antioch thanks Lavrov for Russia's efforts to settle Syrian crisis Interfax-Religion/ Russia (05.12.2017) - http://bit.ly/2ACh8nh - Patriarch John X of Antioch and All the East has praised Russia's efforts in Syria, which helped put an end to terrorism and extremism in that country. "Over the past two years, with the Russian army's help, terrorism has been destroyed, putting an end to extremism and killings," he said at a meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov on Tuesday, recalling that the Syrian army has also managed to retake control over all of the territory earlier seized by ISIL (banned in Russia).

Hellenes and Arabs at Home and Abroad: Greek Orthodox Christians from Aleppo in Athens Owen Harris A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in International Studies University of Washington 2021 Committee: Kathie Friedman Mary Kay Gugerty Program Authorized to Offer Degree: Henry M. Jackson School of International Studies ©Copyright 2021 Owen Harris University of Washington Abstract Hellenes and Arabs at Home and Abroad: Greek Orthodox Christians from Aleppo in Athens Owen Harris Chair of the Supervisory Committee: Kathie Friedman Jackson School of International Studies Abstract: In this thesis, I show how communities living together in relative equality in Aleppo, Syria, and fleeing the same conflict, experienced very different outcomes depending on which religious community they belonged to. Members of the Greek Orthodox Christian community from Aleppo who have moved to Athens reported that their new home is exactly the same as the community they left behind. Members of the Muslim community from Aleppo in Athens did not agree with this statement. Why do Greek Orthodox Christians fare so much better than their Muslim compatriots in Greece? I argue that this inequality is a result of opportunities and challenges created by policies instituted during the great unmixing of peoples in the early 20th century and the refugee crisis in the early 21st century. Greek Orthodox Christians are equal citizens in a secular Arab republic that values ecumenism and members of the Greek diaspora in a Hellenic republic that privileges Greek ethno-religious belonging. They are Arab Hellenes, equally Greek and Syrian. Drawing on data collected in interviews with members of the Greek Orthodox Syrian community in Greece, as well as Syrians of different faiths in other countries, I examine what went right for Greek Orthodox Syrians in Athens and suggest policy tools that government and civil society can use to create similar conditions for Muslim Syrians in Greece.
