The Santa Fe Trail, carrying traders to/from New Mexico, and the Chisholm Trail, that carried cattle from Texas to the Kansas railroad PP towns, are nearby. In addition, people and goods traveled the Smoky Hill Trail, the Overland Despatch Trail and the Fremont Trail in this region. Francisco Coronado is thought to have surveyed the countryside from Coronado Heights just north of the byway.
