Dale2 Yaupon holly, Ilex vomitoria Aiton (Figure 1), is an ever- green woody plant native to the southeastern United States. The species is widely used as a landscape ornamental plant because it tolerates a wide range of soil and environmental conditions, is available in various forms, and is well-suited for Florida-Friendly Landscaping™ (https://edis.ifas.ufl. edu/topic_ffl) because it requires few inputs and attracts wildlife, especially native birds. Abstract Common alder (Alnus glutinosa) is an important tree species, especially in riparian and wet habitats. Alder is very common across Ireland and Northern Ireland, and provides a wide range of ecosystem services. Surveys along the river Lagan in Belfast, Northern Ireland led to the detection of several diseased Alnus trees. As it is known that Alnus suffers from a Phytophthora induced decline, this research set out to identify the presence and scale of the risk to Alnus health from Phytophthora and other closely related oomycetes. Sampling and a combination of morphological and molecular testing of symptomatic plant material and river baits identified the presence of several Phytophthora species, including Phytophthora lacustris. A survey of the tree vegetation along an 8.5 km stretch of the river revealed that of the 166 Alnus trees counted, 28 were severely defoliated/diseased and 9 were dead. -

Arthropods of Elm Fork Preserve Arthropods are characterized by having jointed limbs and exoskeletons. They include a diverse assortment of creatures: Insects, spiders, crustaceans (crayfish, crabs, pill bugs), centipedes and millipedes among others. Positive identification is often achieved only by specialists using obscure monographs to ‘key out’ a species by examining microscopic differences in anatomy. For our purposes in this survey of the fauna, classification at a lower level of resolution still yields valuable information. For instance, knowing that ant lions belong to the Family, Myrmeleontidae, allows us to quickly look them up on the Internet and be confident we are not being fooled by a common name that may also apply to some other, unrelated something. With the Family name firmly in hand, we may explore the natural history of ant lions without needing to know exactly which species we are viewing. In some instances identification is only readily available at an even higher ranking such as Class. Millipedes are in the Class Diplopoda. There are many Orders (O) of millipedes and they are not easily differentiated so this entry is best left at the rank of Class. A great deal of taxonomic reorganization has been occurring lately with advances in DNA analysis pointing out underlying connections and differences that were previously unrealized. For this reason, all other rankings aside from Family, Genus and Species have been omitted from the interior of the tables since many of these ranks are in a state of flux. -

In order to establish an effective control method against this pest, a study of the abundance of larvae L .orbonalis according to phenological stages of eggplant was conducted in the locality of Azaguié, in Guinean area of Côte d'Ivoire. Investigations were carried out from October 2013 to June 2014. The method used were to a weekly counting of larvae on three varieties of the specie Solanum th aethiopicum ( Djamba F 1, Kotobi and N'drowa issia) from 21 day after transplanting until the end of the harvest. All varieties recorded larvae during three phenological stages. The three varieties recorded more larvae at the fruiting stage than at the flowering and stage before flowering with 123.38 ± 4.09; 114.33 ± 4.22 and 106.18 ± 4.25 larvae per 24 plants respectively on Djamba F 1 , Kotobi and N’drowa issia. -

Unfortunately, farmers and crop-protection advisers finding egg masses of stink bugs during crop scouting frequently struggle to identify correctly the species based on their egg masses, and easily confuse eggs of the invasive H. halys with those of other (native) species. To this end, we have investigated using matrix-assisted laser desorption and ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) for rapid, fieldwork-compatible, and low-reagent-cost discrimination between the eggs of native and exotic stink bugs. Abstract: In the current paper, we used a method based on stink bug egg-protein immobilization on filter paper by drying, followed by post-(storage and shipping) extraction in acidified acetonitrile containing matrix, to discriminate between nine different species using MALDI-TOF MS. We obtained 87 correct species-identifications in 87 blind tests using this method. Cyril and Methodius University, Skopje, Republic of Macedonia *e-mail: [email protected] From 2013–2017, 11 chestnut populations and 16 apple orchards/plantations in Macedonia were examined for health; soil, root and bark samples were collected from trees expressing symptoms regarded as Phytophthora specific. Using leaf baits of Prunus laurocerasus and selective V8 Agar (PARPNH), 19 pure Phytophthora sp. cultures were isolated and identified as P. cactorum by ITS sequencing. Sixteen isolates were from apple trees and 3 from chestnut trees. Phylogenetic analyses suggested slight distance between P. cactorum isolates originating from chestnut trees compared to those from apple orchards. Assessment of pathogenicity using chestnuts twigs showed no differences be- tween P. cactorum isolates from the two tree host species.
