Iniezioneiniezione the Newsletter of the Northwest Alfa Romeo Club
IniezioneIniezione The newsletter of the Northwest Alfa Romeo Club “Barn Find” at Alfa of Tacoma It was about a week before the Half-fast Lap last September when my friend, Steve Anderson (now a new club member) called, so excited about a “barn find” he had heard about that he couldn’t even wait for me to finish my shower. An uncle, Steve Bates, had been to his house for dinner the night before, and had told of a 1957 Alfa spider that his brother-in-law had taken to Alfa of Tacoma for repairs in 1977 and never picked up. Steve B’s brother-in-law, Phil George, had lived in Richland and acquired the car in about 1967. Steve remembers that Phil drove the car actively, and on one particular “hold on tight” ride, Phil told him that he and the Alfa “became one” when he drove. Steve had his doubts. When the engine began to show problems, Phil brought it to Alfa of Tacoma. Carlo ended up rebuilding the top and bottom ends, the front suspension, the brakes, and replaced the steering box. Carlo knew the car and said Phil had always taken good care of it, but when it came time to pick it up, he couldn’t pay for it. He stopped by often to see it, though. Phil remarried, but his new wife thought he really didn’t need that car, so there it sat, in the second bay from the window, on jack stands and under a cover. Phil died about five years ago and Lino had no idea how to contact any of the family. -

500 Owners Association MOTOR SPORT Magazine Clippings - 1940’s Issued: 4th March 2015 Notes on 500 and 500-related references This paper is an attempt to record every single 500-related reference from the entire run of the magazine. It includes articles, references in event reports, For Sale advertisements. It also tries to include details that are relevant to the context of the 500 movement, such as clubs, organisation of the sport, and the development of venues. The only area where it is limited is when covering the careers of 500 drivers before or after their time in the movement Status: All magazines in the time period have been fully catalogued. Notes On : • Magazine issues with no entry & light shading are not available for cataloguing. We would be grateful if you could volunteer to add any missing issues. • Every effort has been made to find references, including references in general and classified advertisements. However, it is quite possible that some may have been missed whether because they are very obscure, apparently irrelevant, or just human error. • Transcription Style: • Text has been transcribed verbatim (including spelling errors), with only modern grammar substituted for contractions (e.g. “S Moss” for “S.Moss”; “ftd” for f.t.d.) • “(sic)” notation may have been used where relevant in text, and is a transcriber’s note rather than the source text. • For longer articles, only pieces of note are transcribed. The ellipsis (“… “) before a sentence indicates that text deemed irrelevant has been skipped (which could run to many paragraphs, e.g. reports of other classes in an event report). -

! The Ex - Philip Morris, Marlboro Press Car 1974 Lancia Stratos Stradale Chassis Number: 829 AR0 001003 Body Number: 1240/4 Engine Number: 829A 000 001074 • The third Lancia Stratos Stradale ever produced, numbered 1003 with body number 4 and finished in Rosso. Sold to Philip Morris Cigarettes in 1974 and used by them in Marlboro livery as a press car. Present at many race, rally and show events, 1003 remained in Marlboro colours through the ‘70s. • Ownership was transferred to Charles Stewart & Co Ltd in England in 1980, the British affiliate of Philip Morris International. 1003 remained in Marlboro colours through the ownership of Charles Stewart & Co Ltd, and was sold to the current, and first private owner in 1999. Used enthusiastically in the current ownership, 1003 has been subject of extensive work which included engine rebuild, suspension rebuilt and repaint. • Presented today remaining fresh from rebuild, and liveried once more in the iconic Marlboro colours it wore from new. • One of the earliest remaining Lancia Stratos Stradale, one of only a handful of cars to ever be owned by Philip Morris Cigarettes and wear the Marlboro livery, 1003 sits in an special group of historically significant Lancia. Having previously collaborated on designs with Pininfarina, Lancia became the focus of Carrozzeria Bertone. With Bertone wanting to work with Lancia, they set about penning a design to capture the imagination of the fellow Turninese firm. Bertone was aware that Lancia was looking for a replacement for the Fulvia with a view for use in competition, so set about creating a striking masterpiece around the running gear of a Fulvia Coupé. -
