Speaking in a television interview with the Scottish Media Office, Ms Boyle said she was ‘honoured and humbled’ by the invitation from the Church to perform. WHEN the Saville Report into Bloody Sunday found earlier this summer that the killings of 14 civil rights marchers in Derry on January 30, 1972 were unjustified and unjustifiable—and that the marchers them- selves were wholly innocent—it finally provided a little comfort for the families of the victims who had campaigned for so long on their behalf. The families of the victims who were killed by the British army paratroopers in Derry are among the favourites to win this year’s People of the Year Award next month. Nominations for the award closed on June 15, the day when the Saville Report was published. However for the families of 16 others— including two priests—killed in West Belfast by the British Army in the summers of 1971 and 1972, there has been no proper inquiries, no jus- tice or solace. T IS not that often that I put a trembling pen to paper, but writ- ing on Medjugorje is a truly daunting proposition. There are few elements of Catholicism thatI are quite as divisive and contro- versial as the Bosnian village where Mary is reported to have appeared to a number of visionaries since 1981. There are certainly no other aspects of Marian devotion that raise as many passionate opinions as this one, as the letter pages of the SCO testify. In these articles I have tried to main- tain a scrupulous distance from my sub- ject, even though my devotion to Our Lady is what inspired the series in the first place. Yet in this case I would like to start by putting my cards on the table. Medjugorje is a truly complicat- ed phenomenon, one on which the Vatican has yet to pronounce. Indeed, in March of this year a new commis- sion was called into being by the Holy Father with the express purpose of once and for all deciding on the validity of the claims of the seers. In 1991, the local Bishops’ Conference denounced the shrine, yet the Franciscan Order has been its main advocate.

ersonally, I have some reserva- tions. My main reasons for finding Pmyself in the sceptics’ camp are two-fold. The claim for Marian appari- tions at Medjugorje shares that central characteristic of most Marian apparitions of the past two centuries: it originates in a climate of acute stress. Bosnia is one of the most troubled parts of Europe. When the first claims arose, the country was still part of Communist Yugoslavia, where the Catholic Church was frequently perse- cuted. This changed during the 1990s, when Bosnia became the scene of the bitterest war on our continent since 1945. Our weekly series on children’s liturgy has word lesson plans for use with young people who are on the path to Christ Each week, catechists will find readings and Psalm responses, complemented by prayer, reflection, FAITH discussion questions, and activities. Please feel free to use them as you wish The lessons are created by Adorer-theologians using the lens of the spirituality of St Maria de Mattias, which also embraces precious blood spirituality FIRST While this is the starting point for the lessons, readers are invited to approach them however the spirit moves you The Church is concerned with the availability and understanding of scripture for children who have their rightful place in the Church. In light of this SCO aims to provide a useful tool in drawing children closer to KIDS the Catholic Faith

There are places I remember all my life, though some have changed. Some forever not for better, some have gone, but some remain. All these places had their moments, with lovers and friends I still can recall. Some are dead and some are living, in my life I’ve loved them all John Lennon/Paul McCartney

T WAS 9am. I was sitting at the kitchen table, gazing through the window. Watching. Watching and wondering. Will the sun manage to fight its way out from behind the clouds and give us a beautiful day?I Or are we to have no summer at all this year? I reflect that in recent weeks everyone has been complaining about the poor summer we have had—lots of rain and no shine. The telephone rang, it was an old friend. “Hi there. Want to come and see some bands with me?” he asked. “What bands and where?” I droned unenthusiastically. “Lots of them, T in the Park. Want to come?” he quipped enthusiastical- ly. “Thanks, but no thanks. I am going to the Cats Protection Bazaar.” “You and your cats... you’re like an old man,” he replied with disdain and dis- appointment in equal measure. Bidding farewell, he hung up. I returned to my position to check out the bat- tle of the elements. If fire wins I decided that I would venture out. If water wins, I would opt to stay at home, even though it is nice sometimes to go out in the rain. And so I sat drinking my cof- fee in the trenches. Passively awaiting my fate, my thoughts drift to the last time I was invited to have ‘Tea in the Park.’

Mother Teresa of Calcutta you idiot! Who is… Look, never mind, do you want to come? I’m meeting her in town and we’re going up to Glasgow Green for a cup of tea and a chat. Go on, it’ll get you out of the house. Don’t forget to bring your camera,” he added. Later that morning I met my friend Jim in the city centre. As we walked along Bath Street I asked about this Mother Teresa. “She is a nun,” Jim informed. “Oh God no! Not another nun! I’m always meeting nuns, ministers, priests, and bish- ops with you. Why can’t we meet someone with a bit of zap for a change? Bowie, the Beatles, the Stones or even Elvis?
