What is Your Favorite Year at Dewey? By Anna Siddiqui

Many Dewey 5th graders have been at Dewey for 6 years now. So many For Kindergarten, people liked how easy it was, not having homework and great teachers and great years. So many amazing memories that have made getting to sleep. us 5th graders have a great time through the years, but everyone has a fa- vorite year here. The one that sticks out the most. Surprisingly enough, no one voted 1st grade as their favorite year.

“What was your favorite year at Dewey and why?” was the question that I 2 people voted for 2nd grade and they said that they had nice teachers, lots asked a bunch of 5th graders. Below is a table of the results. of friends and did fun stuff.

Rumor Has It. Life at Nichols. By Caroline Brady and Zoe Snider

Lunch We were also nervous about where we were going to sit at lunch. What if none of your friends were in your lunch period? Where would you sit then? We heard that you would usually have someone in your lunch period that you knew, and if you didn’t you would just sit with people from your other classes.

“It just depends on the day. I have two tables that I like to sit at, at lunch. But you can really just sit wherever you want.” – Julian Sims, 6th grader

“You can sit with whoever you want. You and your friends just kinda find a table to sit at.” – Jake Snider,10th grader

Lucy Hogan, 8th grader, had great advice. “You will meet new friends in your classes and you will still have your friends from Dewey too and you can all sit together at a table. You can sit wherever you want at lunch.”

Map vs. Parcc Grade 3 Pioneer Day By Audrey Levisay and Evey Harrel

Do you like tests? Well this year we had 2 different test Map (Measures Of Academic Progress) and Parcc (Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers) Both tests have ups and downs here are some for the Map and The Parcc test.

Parcc

Ups of Parcc Downs of Parcc

1. You only get 7 questions for your first 1. It is hard, and when you finish it can be reading test. SUPER boring waiting for others.

2. You get gum or mints to keep you 2. You have to write essays and explain occupied during the test. your answers.

3. This year Parcc did not count for 3. The computer can have errors and shut your grade. down on you.

MAP Test

Ups of MAP Test Downs of MAP Test

1. It’s easier than PARCC. 1. It’s boring when it’s over and when you do it. 2. It’s only one hour long. 2. MAP Test reading is boring and the math 3. MAP Test reading only has 11 questions. is very hard.

4. You can push yourself by doing your best 3. You never know how hard your test on a problem you don’t know. . will be

But remember that all of these are OUR opinion so what’s yours??? We asked Dewey students their opinions about the MAP and PARCC tests. See the results blow.

In conclusion, two boys thought MAP was harder and three boys thought PARCC was harder. Also, all boys liked MAP better, and seven girls thought MAP was better, and four girls thought PARCC was harder. Also all boys liked MAP better and seven girls thought MAP was better and five girls liked PARCC better.

So there were a lot of mixed feelings about these tests!!!!!!!

Dear Future Dewey Student By Ali Cutter

DEAR FUTURE DEWEY STUDENT,

Dewey is a great school! You get to meet a lot of new friends and get to have very nice teachers. You get to go to music, art, drama and library. And you get to go to gym, (P.E. – physical education) every day and you get to have recess and lunch, (although kindergartners have an extra recess at the end of the day). The rules are called the Dewey Do’s. The Dewey Do’s are: Be Safe, Be Respectful, Be Caring and Be Here, Be Ready. If you follow the Dewey Do’s, you get a special reward called a Tiger Ticket. You can trade Tiger Tickets in for special things like school store and P.B.I.S celebrations, but save your Tiger Tickets up for the end of the school year because there’s a school rummage sale! There are also Tremendous Tiger Tickets, which is a reward your whole class gets if a teacher thinks the whole class does a good job. If your class gets a certain amount of Tremendous Tiger tickets, then your class gets a party! Going to Dewey school will be an awesome experience! Have a good time!

They varied from partner singing Vance Joy’s Riptide to playing Ode to Joy on the piano. Even Mr. Khelghati let loose with a joke from the 2nd grade bazaar! The night of the show was a great night for the people performing and the people watching. I can hardly wait until next year!

College World Series By Charlie Kalil

The College World Series is a baseball champion- ship where the two best division 1 teams play for the College World Series Championship.

The best 8 teams in the NCAA are split into 2, four team double elimination brackets. The win- ners of the brackets play for the College World Series Championship!

The College World Series is always in Omaha, Nebraska. This year it will be played from June 13 – June 23!

The first ever College World Series was played in 1949 in Kalamazoo, Michigan.

Last year Vanderbilt won the College World Series in a 2–1 series win!

Rules: • It is a double elimination tournament. • It is a three game series where you have to win 2 games to win the championship.

The stadium is like a MLB size stadium! The weather is beautiful and there is another club tour- nament at the same time!

I hope this information helped you understand the College World Series a little more!

NFL Draft By Miles Sims

The first NFL draft took place on February 8, 1936 at the Ritz Carlton Hotel in Philadelphia, PA. The NFL draft was the only draft to have nine rounds, the next year it has had 10 rounds. Since the first draft, there has been a college draft held every year.

The draft was supposed to make the teams have an equal chance of winning. The idea called for a draft where the weaker teams would have the first choice of the top college prospects. The teams draft in reverse order on their finish, with the champions from the previous season picking last. Each team is given a position in the draft in reverse order from the winners of the Super Bowl to the worst teams. So the best teams get the bad players and the worst teams can get the better players.

A team can trade draft picks to another team to get more picks to draft players, while the other team gets a player from their team.

The first player ever drafted was Jay Berwanger, but he never played. Riley Smith, the second pick was the first player drafted to play in the NFL.

The current draft took place in Chicago this year, at the Roosevelt University Auditorium from April 30th – May 2nd. Here are the results of the top 7 teams picks:

Mr. Jacobs and Ms. Shaw By Sophie Brown, Stella Morton, Marlena Weheliye and Marcus Van Mieghem

Dewey school is so lucky for having a choice in 4th/5th grade to play orchestra or band for free, and to top it all off we have two wonderful teach- ers that give us our lessons. Mr. Jacobs and Ms. Shaw are the band and orchestra teachers. They teach you to play a variety of instruments includ- ing trumpet, french horn, drums (all of the band department) as well as the violin, viola, cello, bass (all of the orchestra department).

We asked Ms. Shaw and Mr. Jacobs multiple ques- tions. Since Ms. Shaw is an orchestra teacher we wondered how many instruments she plays. She said she performs on the violin and piano. Getting To Know Ms. Hall By Aoife Lucas and Jojo Layden

Ms. Hall is Mrs. Brand’s student teacher. She is super nice and a great teacher! So we wanted to learn more about her. Lots of kids in our class ask her ques- tions so we thought it would be a good idea to interview her.

We learned that Ms. Hall loves Starbucks. Her favorite drink is a ice skimmed latte. She describes our fourth grade class as energetic, hilarious, chatty. Next year she really wants to teach fourth grade! We asked her how her hair is so perfect. She said that it’s not. We also asked her if her family was from a dif- ferent country, and she said that her Bobba (her grandpa) was from Iran. She does not speak any other languages but she is trying to learn Greek! She goes to St. Louis University. She really wants to teach at Dewey next year.

Now we decided to ask some personal questions. In her free time she loves to cook, read, and spend time with her family and friends. She only has one sister. Her sister is a little younger than her.

We loved learning about Ms. Hall. Everyone from Room 113 wishes her luck on her teaching experience next year.

Update: Mission to Pluto By Colin Bozza

In the last edition of Tiger Times I reported on the New Horizons space probe that was launched on January 19, 2006 to explore Pluto. The pic- ture from the last edition of Tiger Times was a fuzzy image because New Horizons was 126,000,000 miles away from Pluto. On April 9, 2015, New Horizons took its first color images of Pluto and Charon from 71,000,000 miles away from Pluto.

New Horizons is getting closer to Pluto. It’s already done a fly-by of Jupiter. New Horizons will be closest to Pluto on July 14, 2015 at 6:49 am CDT. Then we should get the clearest images of Pluto. We might even discover moons of Pluto that we didn’t know existed.

If you are interested in learning more about New Horizons go to nasa.gov and search New Horizons. If you are interested in seeing other planets or stars with your own eyes, you can go to the Dearborn Observatory at North- western University on Friday nights from 9:00-11:00 PM. To find out more about the observatory you can go to Dearborn’s website http://www.phys- ics.northwestern.edu/observatory/ or you can call them at 847.491.7650.
