Natural History Museum, London (BM) and elsewhere(lide Powell & Morley 1976),there seemsto be no surviving cultivated material that can definitely be said to have been used by Brown for the "Hortus Kewensis". There is, however, a hithedo little-known collection of madeby William McNab from the plants grown at Kew Gardens. The collection, which is housed at the National Herbarium, Glasnevin, Dublin (DBN), is valuablebecause it containswhat appearsto be the only specimensofthe cultivated plantsBrown described, and assuch they help to identify the taxa, aswell as being potentially availableas neotypes.

The purposeof this paper is to determinewhat Acacla specimensRobert Brown usedto compile "Hortus his descriptionsof new speciesin Kewensis", and to selecttypes from among them This task has been facilitated by an examinationof Robert Blown's unpublishedmanuscdpt descliptions "wild" "wild" at BM of both andcultivated plants, and his collectionof specimensat BM, andMcNab's cultivated matedal at DBN.

Robert Brown and the "Hortus Kewensis"

"Hortus 1. Brown's involvement in Aiton's Kewensis" ed. 2

.,Hortus Aiton's Kewensis,,was publishedin two editiors, the first in 1789in tbree volumes and "Hortus the secondbetween 1810-1813 in five volumes. Britten (1912)remarked that the title, Kewensis,,,was misleadingbecause the work treatedplants cultiYatednot only at the Royal Botanic Gardensat Kew, but also at Chelsea,Upton and Islington gardens. Indeed, as noted by Mabberley (1985), this work was really a guide to the plantsin cultivation in southernEngland at that time. This "an is not at vadance with the prefaceof edition 2, where the purposeis describedas attempt .... to trace back, as far as possible, how long eachplant hasbeen cultivated in the British gardensand to fix ...... rhe epoch of ils introduc(ion.'

"Hortus The secondedition of Aiton's Kewensis" was edited initially by Dryander but after his task was assumedby RobertBrown. The natuleofBrown's involvementwas that ofsoientific deaththe "I editor, rather than the pre printing sort ofediting. In a letter to de Candolle in 1817,Brown wlote must take this oppodunity ofstating that I am neitherdeserving ofpraise or blame for any pafi ofthat work unlesswhat I put my name to ... the Manuscript was preparedfor publication befbre it came into my hands, and all I had time to do was to attempt to saveit tiom very grosselTors & to add a certain porlion oforiginal information in eachofthe 3last volumes [i e commencingwith page 175 of vol.31."(Mabberley 1985).

"Hortus 2. Authorship ofAcacia names published in Kewensis"

"Hortus Aiton, in a postscripton pages531-532 of volune 5 of Kewensis"ed 2, statedthat not all of Brown's contributions to this work are indicatedin the volumes;however, those that ale bear "Brown the notation mss". In the caseof Acoci0, this notation appea$ at the end of the desoriptive text of each of the nine new species,as well as at the end of three of the four new combination tllat were efTected, namely, A. decipiens(Koenig ) R Br.' A. nigricans (Labill) R Br' and A' sophorae (Labill.) R. Br. That Brown was indeedthe author ofthe nine new speciesis supportedalso by the factthat in J.J.Bennett's ( 1867:471-510) publication of Brown'smiscellaneous contributions he includedthe descriptionsof thesespecies. Bennett was in a peculiarlygood positionto know DreciselvwhatBrown had contributedbecause he wasBrown's long-timefriend andpelsonal assistant a

The specimens

1. Robert Brown's collection of "wild" specimensat BM

As alreadynoted RobertBrown wasin Australiafrom l80l to 1805,during which time he collected assiduouslyin rnanyparts ofthe continent. Although many ofhis bestspecimens fiom the southcoast of Austnlia, and all the living plants, were destroyedwith the sinking of the Porpoise, he reached Englandwithout havinglost any one speciesaitogether (Stearn 1960). Survivingspecimens were studied by Brown at the BM and after his deathwere bequeathedto his successor,J.J. Bennett, who stipulatedin his will thatthe first setshoulcl go to BM andduplicates to K andE. Edwards(1976) relatedthat JamesBdtten subsequentlycompiled a manuscriptlist of the species, ananged by the numbers which he assignedto each species;it is thesenumbers that are often erroneouslycited as Bennett or Brown numbgrs.

2. Is there a collection of cultivated plants used by Brown?

"Hortus Severalauthors have statedthat a collection of cultivatedplants was at BM on which the Kewensis" was based:James Britten ( 1905)in discussingthe importantcollections at herb.BM noted that "The most importantcollection ofcultivated plantsis, however, that from the Royal Gardens,Kew, which containsthe typesofthe numerousspecies described by Banks' librariansSolander and Dryander (helpedin the secondedition by Brown) in Aiton's HortusKewer'sis, the MS. originaldesariptions of theseand of a large number of other plants in the Sloaneand Banksianherbaria are preservedin the DepaftmentofBotany." Lasegue(18,15) in his classiccompilation ofinformation aboutcollections "An then in existcncestated (translation) herbariumcomposed of plantscultivated at the Royal Garden at Kew and descdbedh the Hoftus Kewenslsis found in a specialAiton collection which is part of the Banks herbarium". Bdtten (1912),however, pointed outthatLasegue was not altogetheraccurate, "for 'carry Aiton did not possessa herbadum,it being his custom,as hasbeen already stated (p.3), to his specimensand doubts to Banks' library, where they were examinedand resolvedby Solander." "The Furthermore,Stearn ( 1981)notes that plantsraised at Kew from their seedneeded identification, which could only be done by a botanistsuch as Solanderwith both Banks' herbariumand rich library at hand. Thusspecimens grown at Kew likewisecame into the Banksian herbarium." He alsostates: "The typesofthe HortusKewensis are not at Kew, asis ofien expected, but in the DepartmentofBotany at the Natural History Museum, having come with the Banksian herbarium."

Notwithstandingthe precedingconments, we havebeen unable to locatecultivated material at BM that originated tiom Kew Gardensand formed the basisofRobefi Brown's treatmentof Acdci./.

3. William McNab's collection of cultivated specimensat DBN

An importantand until recently,little-known collection ofplants in theW.R. McNab collectionat DBN hasrelevance to the typificationof Brown'sAcdcia names (Nelson 1990). W.R. McNab was professorof botany to the Royal College of Sciencein Dublin and Scientific Superintendentof the NationalBotanic Gardens, Glasnevin. He wasthe grandson of Wiiliam McNab who wasa gardener at the Royal BotanicGardens, Kew, fiom l80l until l8l0 (Nelson1980). The Acacla specimens at DBN werecollected by William McNab (Nelson1990) between 1806 and 1809from plantsgrowing at Kew Gardensand included the following species,A. dlatd, A. armd:a (= A. paradoxa),A. bifktra, A. ciliata (= A. browniana vr. browniana),A. mqrginqta(= A. ntrttfolie), A. pulchella and, A. .sulcqta. These plants were probably grown from seedsupplied by Peter Good around 1803 and "Hortus ". were the plantsupon which RobertBrown baseddescriptions published in Kewensis a

In the absenceofboth Patemonspecimens and ofmaterial fiom cultivatedplants it is necessaryto selecta replacementtype for the nameA . .tcicularis. Accordingly, a neotypehas been selected from "wild" among Brown's gatheringsfrom the samegeneral area cited in his manuscriptdescription of "wild" material. The slight difference between the n€otype spccimen and the protologue can be explainedby assuDringthat Brown overlookedthe sparse, rninute hairs at the apicesofthe branchlets.

Acacla acicularisis the basename ofA. brownil (Poiret) Steud.and the complex nomenclatureof this speciesand its very close rclative, A. ulicifulia (Salisb.)Court, is discussedby Court (1957 & 1972;155-156) and by Pedley(1980:239-214).

Note: In the protologueBrown describedflowering material and appendedthe notation "Brown mss" "South-west to the description; he also referred to material he had collectedfrom the coast of New Holland", and said that the specieshad beenintroduced finto England] by Peter Good in 1803.

At BM the only Robert Brown specimensseen are those cited above which representBrown's "wild" gatheringsofthe species. The specinenscomprise flowering, fruiting and sterileelemcnts and the sheetis labelled by Brown as Minora platycaulis. The DBN material of this speciesconsists of flowering and fruiting specimens, both I abelledAcqciq aLataby McNab. They were collectedin 1808 liom plants grown at Kew but there is no evidencethat Brown actually saw this material. Both these "wi1d" and cultivated specimensrepresent the sametaxon.

There are two Robert Brown manuscript descriptionsof A. qlata at BM, both under the name Mimosa pla4caulis. One describesboth flowers and fruits ofthe "wild" gatheringsreferred to above, while the other describesonly a flowering specinen in cultivation at Kew in 1806.

From comparing the two manuscriptdescriptions rvith the protologueit seemsprobable that the "Hortus Kewensis"account was abstracted from Brown's 1806description ofthe plantin cultivation at Kew. Althoughthe DBN specimensare from plantsgrown at Kew (collectedin 1808),there is no evidencethat Brown actually usedthese to preparehis publisheddescription. Therefore, because there is no cultivated material which can be regardedas a type o'i A. alata \\e have selectedthe lectotype fromamong Brown's wild' g:ttherings.

Acacia alata will be teated as comprising four varietiesin the fb hcoming "Flora of " account.

Iectotypico(see above).Thelabel accompanyingthese specimens is annotatedin Brown's hand. The DBN material of this speciesconsists of flowering specimens, both IabelledAcaciabifloraby McNab; they were collected in 1809from plants grown at Kew but there is no evidencethat Brown actually saw this material. This material reprcsentsA. robinde.

"Mimosa Thereis only onerelevant Robert Brown manuscdptdescription at BM. This is annotated biflora" and describesa flowering specinen in cultivation at Kew in 1807,grown from seedcollected "Port at King George'sSound" [Albany, W.A.]. Closescrutiny of this descrjptionleads us to the conclusion that the describedby B rown was likely A. robinae, a conclusionsupported by the fact that the DBN cultivatedspecimens are alsothis species. Moreover, the plant desctibedand illustratedas A. biflora by Wendland (1820) also seemsto be A. robinae, suggestingthat the misapplication was prevalentin gardensin Europe at the time.

The publishedoriginal descriptionol A. biflora, however, seems unlikely to have beenbased exclusively on Brown's manuscriptdescription of tbe plant cultivated at Kew. Indeed, following a careful examinationof all relevantmaterial we are of the opinion that elementsof both A. biflora and A. rctbinaeare included in the original description. As there is no cultivated material which can be "wild" regardedas type of A. bi;florawehave selectedthe lectotypefrom amongBrown's gathedngs

Acaciaciliata R. Br. in W.T. Aiton,Hort. Kew. ed.2, 5: 465 (1813).Neotype fide B.R.Maslin 1975: 425): "Acacia strigosaLink" (not in Brown's handand with no otherdetails) - lower lelt handflowering "Iter specimenon sheettitled Australiense,1802-5" and bearing [Britten no.] 4321 (BM).

"Brown Note: In the protologueBrown describedflowedng material and appendedthe notation mss" "South-west to the descdption; he also referred to material he had collected from the coast of New Holland",and saidthat the specieshad been introduced [into England] by PeterGood in 1803.

As discussedby Maslin (1975 425),the BM sheeton which the neotypsis mountedis very inailequatelylabelled; there is no indication of the origin of the (rnixed) specirnensit bearsand there is no direct indication that Robert Brown ever consultedthe material (as evidencedby the absenceof his handwriting). The rnaterialcornprises a flowering specimenofA. LuteoLqM^slrn, four flowering specimensand a fruitingspecimen ofA . brownianQH.Wendl. var. browniana, these two taxaoccur sympatrically at Albany, a locality visited by Brown in 1801/02. The lowermost flowering specimen on the sheetwas selectedas the neotypeof A. ciLiata by Maslin (loc. cil ). The DBN materiai is mountedon a sheetof flowering specimenslabelledAcacla cillala by McNab; theseate A. broh)nian.I vat. browniq a and were collected in Jll08 from plants grown at Kew but there is no evidencethat Brown actually saw this material.

There is one Robert Brown manuscriptdescription at BM which accordswell with the protologue "Mimosa" of A. ciLiata. It is simply annotated by Brown and describesa flowering specimenin cultivation at Kew in May 1806. Although this descriptionagrees quite well with the specimenselected previously as the neotype,it is impossibleto determinewitl't any degreeof certainty whether this is "wild" cultivated or material.

"Hortus From comparingthe manuscriptdescription with the protologueit seemsprobable that the Kewensis"account was abstracted from Brown's 1806description ofthe plantin cultivationat Kew. However, as there remainsso many uncertaintiesregarding the origin and authenticityof specimens at BM we are not able to improve on the original neotypitication. .eluDu :snqt u,^\ojg,{q palleqrl ole sualurcedsaseqJ srqtIo uorlucr;rd,{1 'r9€t ,htrg eql uo 3ur.Ieequ e,req,{uru qcrqm I ou lleuuag] patptouu€qtoq tu steeqso,{\t oJ€ eraq:L

There is only one Brown rnanuscriptdescription of this speciesat BM. It usesthe nameMi'?osc and describesflowering material. Although there is no direct indication as to the origin cinerlscens "wild" of the plant described("wilcl" or cultivated) it may possibly be basedon a gatheringbecause the plant is descdbedas a small or medium tlee

"Hortus It is difficult to detemine the basisof the Kewensis"descdption of A. mel4nory lon because noneof the specimensat BM or DBN is from a cultivatedplant and the soulceof the manuscript "Hortus descriptionis Lquivocal. An examinationof this descriptionshows that the Kewcnsis" account *u. not tuk"n Jirectly from it. Furthennore,it is a curious fact that there is no McNab material at DBN collected from Kew Gardens,as thefe is tbf most other Brown speciesdiscussed in this papel However, because the protologuealludes to Brown's collectionsfrom Tasmania,we considerthis material to be available fbr lectotypification. Itis noted that Pedley (1918:222) regardedBrorvn's Port Dalrymple, Jan. I 804, specirnen(in young fruit) as the holotype of A melanoryLon However' "wild" in view oi'the fact that two collectionsof material areinvolved, a lectotypeshould have been "Port selected.Because the,,Derwent" collection, unlike the one from Dalrymple", providesthe seed characterscontained in the original descdptionand is representedby a duplicatc at E, we consider it to be the better sourceof the lectotype
