This paper endorses the argument that with the help of new media technologies, journalists can enhance the peacebuilding efforts in societies and communities. Their writings in the alternate media can provide ‘compelling form of engage- ment’ between the audiences and the people affected in the areas of violent conflict. But, the paper further argues, this requires a broadening of the orthodox model of journalistic objectivity that has so far been in place. It examines the possibilities of new models in the light of the existing journalism paradigms as argued by scholars including Galtung and Ruge (1965), Lynch and McGoldrick (2005), Shinar (2007), Hackett (2011) and Shaw (2011). It concludes on the need to have a model that is ‘a more natural fit’ for the 21st century by giving journalists the ‘flexibility’ to enable people to make their own judgments as to where the truth lies; and to open up the possibilities for dialogue and engagement in conflict resolution. Journalists are often severely impacted by armed conflict: they may be the victims of targeted violence or co‐opted by one side or another to spread partisan propaganda. In protracted conflicts, journalism training, financing and infrastructure may dry up completely, impacting the ability of community members to access information. Media development in post‐conflict settings has become a priority of funding bodies, as an independent fourth estate is believed to strengthen democratic mechanisms, and guard against a return to violence. The Nepal case study serves to explore how local media may interact with an evolving peace process, and what support the international community may be able to offer. Drawing upon grounded theory, this thesis presents the findings of fieldwork conducted in Nepal from December 2010 to January 2011. Thirty‐three in‐depth interviews were conducted in three key geo‐political locations. Core findings of this research reveal that the Nepalese media sector needs continuing support.

In it, we put forward a definition that has been quoted in most subsequent published work in the field: Peace Journalism is when editors and reporters make choices – of what to report and how to report it – that create opportunities for society at large to consider and value nonviolent responses to conflict. It affirms the value of media embedding to the historian, as hundreds of journalists witnessed major combat operations firsthand. This line of argument stands in stark contrast to other academic assessments of the embedding program, which have criticized it by claiming media bias and military censorship. Here, an examination of the cultural and social dynamics of an army at war provides agency to soldiers, combat reporters, and innocent civilians caught in the crossfire.
