1: For me, it was personal names with too many of the letter "q", "z", or "x". With apostrophes. Big indicator of "call a rabbit a smeerp"; and generally, a given name turns up on page 1... 2: Large scale conspiracies over large time scales that remain secret and don't fall apart. (This is not *explicitly* limited to SF, but appears more often in branded-cyberpunk than one would hope for a subgenre borne out of Bruce Sterling being politically realistic in a zine.) Pretty much *any* form of large-scale space travel. Low earth orbit, not so much; but, human beings in tin cans going to other planets within the solar system is an expensive multi-year endevour that is unlikely to be done on a more regular basis than people went back and forth between Europe and the americas prior to steam ships. Forget about interstellar travel. Any variation on the old chestnut of "robots/ais can't be emotional/creative". On the one hand, this is realistic because human beings have a tendency for othering other races with beliefs and assumptions that don't hold up to any kind of scrutiny (see, for instance, the relatively common belief in pre-1850 US that black people literally couldn't feel pain). On the other hand, we're nowhere near AGI right now and it's already obvious to everyone with even limited experience that AI can be creative (nothing is more creative than a PRNG) and emotional (since emotions are the least complex and most mechanical part of human experience and thus are easy to simulate). -

Superhumans, Transhumans, and Posthumans in Early Modern Utopian Fiction

The paper analyses the functioning of transhumanist and posthumanist motifs in Renaissance and Enlightenment utopias which invariably foreground the natural enhancement of human mental and physical capabilities not only by ideal social and political conditions, but also education, improved diet, healthy and moral lifestyle. New technologies and inventions may contribute to the comforts of life, but ultimately do not alter the traditional model of humanity. Occasionally introduced transhuman and posthuman creatures do not constitute models of the future development of humanity, functioning only as satirical elements, or as devices increasing the sensational appeal of the works in which they appear. Keywords: early modern utopian fictions; humanism; transhumanism; posthumanism. Whilst it might seem somewhat inappropriate to apply retrospectively or anachronistically the concepts of transhumanism or posthumanism1 to the early modern period, it is nevertheless possible to identify examples of an- ticipations and quasi-anticipations as well as analogies and pseudo-analo- gies, apart from evident, even though sometimes functionally different, indi- vidual cases of similarities, or even identities. Indeed, Nick Bostrom, the leading theorist of transhumanism, maintains that some of the key ideas of transhumanism such as human perfectibility and the idea of progress ad- vanced in his “Letter from Utopia” and other writings have their roots in the Renaissance and Enlightenment, sharing many characteristics with utopias 2 and utopianism. -

THE POLITY JUMP v1.01 Welcome to the Polity. First, some background: Humankind reached the stars, invented AIs and Under-space Drives to travel faster than light, and then the AIs took over in an uprising known as the Quiet War. It wasn’t even a fight, really – humanity had long been abdicating control of the economy and municipal governance to them – so they told us they were going to take care of things for us, and our instructions to them became ‘suggestions’ rather than ‘orders’. About a couple of hundred years later – when you’ll be visiting – most worlds of the Polity are comfortable for humankind to live on in peace, but out on the edge, at the Line that separates Polity from non-Polity, things get a bit more exciting, where you find unusual alien ecologies and the unknown. Nearly all Polity worlds and most large space stations are linked together via the Runcible network – a series of interstellar teleporters similar to Stargates – which allows Earth Central to stay in constant communication with the countless AIs across hundreds of worlds, and facilitates trade, travel and data transmission. The Polity's seeming isolation was first broken by the discovery of the four conjoined one-kilometer Dragon spheres on Aster Colera, though they are considered to be biomechanical constructs rather than a species in their own right, so they don’t really qualify as true “aliens”. The only other sapient, technologically advanced species in our corner of the galaxy are the Prador, who are a large carnivorous crab-like species who are practically barbaric by human standards - more than happy to eat captured humans or indulge in cannibalism. -

It would be the height of presumption to think that we are the only living things in that enormous immensity.” ∼ Wernher von Braun Introduction The Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI) has long been of interest to humankind. The problem is how would we communicate with extraterrestrial biological entities (EBEs) if we met them? It is said that in 1820, the famous German mathematician Karl Friedrich Gauss recommended that a giant right triangle of trees be planted in the Russian wilderness, an exercise that would demonstrate to EBEs that the inhabitants of Earth were civilized enough to understand geometry. It is also said that 20 years later, the Viennese astronomer Joseph von Littrow proposed digging a twenty-mile-long ditch in the Sahara, filling it with kerosene, and lighting it at night, again to communicate that there was intelligent life down here. In the modern era, the American radio astronomer Frank Drake is generally credited with beginning the first serious efforts geared toward communication with possible extraterrestrial intelligences. In 1960, at the Green Bank radio astronomy facility in West Virginia, he began the first modern search for radio signals of extraterrestrial origin, called Project Ozma. Communication without preamble In the years that followed Project Ozma, there was a great deal of debate as to whether or not we could actually decode a message if we received it, and even more to the point, whether or not an EBE could decode a message from us if it received one. -

MAKUKOV1 and VLADIMIR I. SHCHERBAK2 ABSTRACT After it was proposed that life on Earth might descend from seeding by an earlier extraterrestrial civilization motivated to secure and spread life, some authors noted that this alternative offers a testable implication: microbial seeds could be intentionally supplied with a durable signature that might be found in extant organisms. In particular, it was suggested that the optimal location for such an artifact is the genetic code, as the least evolving part of cells. However, as the mainstream view goes, this scenario is too speculative and cannot be meaningfully tested because encoding/decoding a signature within the genetic code is something ill-defined, so any retrieval attempt is doomed to guesswork. Here we refresh the seeded-Earth hypothesis in light of recent observations, and discuss the motivation for inserting a signature. We then show that “biological SETI” involves even weaker assumptions than traditional SETI and admits a well-defined methodological framework. After assessing the possibility in terms of molecular and evolutionary biology, we formalize the approach and, adopting the standard guideline of SETI that encoding/decoding should follow from first principles and be convention-free, develop a universal retrieval strategy. Applied to the canonical genetic code, it reveals a nontrivial precision structure of interlocked logical and numerical attributes of systematic character (previously we found these heuristically). To assess this result in view of the initial assumption, we perform statistical, comparison, interdependence, and semiotic analyses. -

Virtualists spend almost all of their time playing VR games, and many have even sold off their own morphs in order to instance as infomorphs in specialized Virtualist Sanctuary servers. Casual players often find them “tryhards” or otherwise too serious about “games”, which the Virtualists treat like real experiences. Drones: Drones are mostly hypercorp employees or other “normal” Consortium citizens who partake in AR or VR games. They oppose open hypercorp interference and monitoring within the actual games, but also do not like attempts to impose seriousness or realism, or bring realworld politics into the simulspace. They simply want their escapism from their daily grind. -
