SATURDAY 10TH MAY 2008 THE LOWE SYNDROME GALA CHARITY EVENT Thank you for attending tonight’s Lowe Syndrome Trust THE charity event at the May Fair Hotel. I have been a Trustee of the LOWE SYNDROME Lowe Syndrome Trust since it was founded just over eight years GALA CHARITY EVENT ago and proud to be part of such a worthwhile cause. Lowe Syndrome is a devastating disease that affects thousands of boys born worldwide with symptoms including cataracts TH 10 MAY 2008 (either blind or partially sighted), stunted growth, poor muscle THE MAY FAIR HOTEL tone, rickets, scoliosis, arthritis (some never walk), kidney STRATTON STREET problems, epilepsy and mental impairment. In spite of these LONDON W1 handicaps, the little boys have extremely happy and cheeky personalities. Sadly few become adults. The charity is very small but is now regarded as the main fund raiser in the world for medical research. To date, we have funded 12 research projects in the UK including Dundee University, Great Ormond Street Children’s Hospital, University College London, Institute of Ophthalmology, Imperial College London, Addenbrooke’s Hospital Cambridge and Manchester University. Projects funded in the USA include The Institute of California and most recently Purdue University. These projects are paving the way to finding better treatments and eventually a cure - with your help we are one step nearer. Have a great evening!     Daily Telegraph July 28 2001 A mixed blessing at the ballet Photo Sheila Rock As Anthony Dowell leaves the Royal Ballet, dance critic Ismene Brown assesses his 15-year regime as director - and stars pay tribute below AT THE Royal Ballet the countdown has begun to the end of an era. A week tonight, amid flowers, Champagne and tears, Sir Anthony Dowell, the longest-serving ballet director since the company’s founder, Ninette de Valois, will end his 15-year regime. He was undoubtedly one of the great world stars of dancing, and the “Celebration Programme” will mark his achievements as such. But about his success as director of the company, opinion is far from unanimous. What makes a good director? The question has never been more of a poser than during Dowell\s captaincy of the ballet, in the most turbulent years of the Royal Opera House’s history. There are many pluses on Dowell’s account sheet - his maintenance of high classical technical standards, his welcoming of key foreign artists into the Royal (particularly Sylvie Guillem and Irek Mukhamedov), his inspiring coaching, to which leading guest stars attest opposite. The rise of Darcey Bussell to world acclaim, the forging of a superb partnership between Mukhamedov and Viviana Durante, this final, nostalgic and beautiful 2000-01 season - these are positive memories. He will be noted as a conservative, and many welcomed this after an insecure period of modernising under his predecessor, Norman Morrice. Whether conservatism has served the company well for the future, though, is debatable. In the shifting landscape of ballet, conservatism is not enough to hold steady.

    Goldies WW1 project wins the Education Category in the 2018 National Lottery Awards Welsh singing sensation Katherine Jenkins OBE surprised Cardiff-based project, Armistice Cantata, on September 12th, with the news that they had won Best Education Project in the National Lottery Awards 2018. The mezzo soprano broke the news of the win to pupils at Thornhill Primary School in Cardiff, who piloted the intergenerational education project with Goldies charity founder Grenville Jones which commemorates the Centenary of the end of WW1 (November 11 2018)! The National Lottery Awards are the annual search for the UK’s favourite Lottery-funded projects and celebrate the inspirational people and projects who do extraordinary things with National Lottery funding. Marking 100 years since the end of the Great War (November 11 2018), Armistice Cantata is part of a two- year intergenerational education project led by Grenville and his Goldies charity that encourages primary schools to open their doors to older people. As part of the programme, from Goldies Cymru – which helps older people get involved in music through daytime FUN Songs and Smiles – teamed up with youngsters from Thornhill Primary school in Cardiff who have written a musical to celebrate the end of World War One. The children from Thornhill Primary appear on stage together in a 30-minute production, named Armistice Cantata. The musical – which includes popular songs from World War One – is now being rolled out to a number of schools across England and Wales. More than 7,000 children and 800 older people from the Goldies charity are taking part.

Read Full Biography Overview Biography Discography Songs Credits Related Share on Artist Biography by Greg Prato Throughout his long and winding solo career, guitarist Robin Trower has had to endure countless comparisons to Jimi Hendrix due to his uncanny ability to channel Hendrix's bluesy/psychedelic, Fender Strat-fueled playing style. Born on March 9, 1945 in Catford, England, Trower spent the early '60s playing guitar in various London-based outfits, the most successful being the R&B group the Paramounts, who specialized mostly in covers, but managed to issue several singles between 1963 and 1965. It wasn't until 1967 that Trower received his big break, however, when he joined Procol Harum. The group had just scored a worldwide smash hit with "A Whiter Shade of Pale," but the only problem was that the band's leader, singer/pianist Gary Brooker, didn't have a proper band to back him. Brooker was previously a bandmate of Trower's in the Paramounts, and offered the guitar slot in his new fast-rising project to his old friend. As a result, Trower appeared on such Procol Harum classics as 1967's Procol Harum, 1968's Shine on Brightly, 1969's A Salty Dog, 1970's Home (which spawned the popular Trower tune "Whiskey Train"), and 1971's Broken Barricades. While Procol Harum helped launch Trower's career, the guitarist realized there was limited space for his guitar work and eventually left for a solo career.

    Darcey Bussell

    Darcey Bussell Early Life Darcey Bussell was born on 27th April, 1969 in London. She started at the Arts Educational School at the Barbican until she auditioned for and joined the Royal Ballet School at White Lodge at the age of 13. In 1985, when she was 16, Darcey was accepted into the Royal Ballet’s Upper School at Barons Court. Success Her fantastic technique was spotted quickly and, in 1988, while she was a member of Sadler’s Wells Royal Ballet company, a lead role was created for her in the new ballet ‘The Prince of the Pagados’. This led to led to her move to the Royal Ballet. In December 1989, when Darcey was just 20 years old, she was promoted to principal dancer, becoming the youngest ballerina to achieve this at the time. Throughout her career, she played many iconic roles, including Princess Aurora in ‘The Sleeping Beauty’, Odette/Odile in ‘Swan Lake’, the Sugar Plum Fairy in ‘The Nutcracker’, and Giselle in ‘Giselle’. In total, she performed more than 80 different roles and 17 roles were created for her. She was a guest performer with many of the most popular ballet companies around the world, including the New York City Ballet, Paris Opera Ballet, Hamburg Ballet and the Australian Ballet.
