GERIATRIC SOCIETY OF ® GSI NEWS

January Vol. IX No. 1 Dr. N. N. Asokan Dr. Om Prakash Sharma President General Secretary & Hony. Editor

Dear Colleagues, This year we had two major activities. One was to bring out another book on Geriatrics and the other was to do an International Conference. Ever since we have separated from API, our Annual Conference has become the main activity of the society. The society had also decided to convert Annual Conference into INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE every alternate years.

GERIATRIC C ARE, the textbook on Geriatrics & Gerontology has certain unique features like this multidiscipline speciality. Geriatric Care; apart from covering various clinical sides of all the relevant diseases covering various organs; and organ systems, has covered basics of Gerontology, Nursing Care, Social Aspects, Administrative and Organizational aspects, Legal and Constitutional aspects and things of practical importance like Lab values in Indian elderly and their Dr. Om Prakash Sharma Nutritional aspects. This is now a knowledge readily available for application for the Indian Geriatric caregivers, Students of Geriatrics, Practitioners of Modern medicine as well as Planners in the government and NGOs. The International Conference this year was a great success, registering 22 NRI’s from UK, USA, Hong Kong, Australia & New Zealand. The response from Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, MCI, HelpAge and various medical institutions was overwhelming. Let us keep the momentum and come up to the expectations of our senior citizens and provide them good health and cover their medical needs. Long live GSI.

We at the head quarters are very happy and proud that the International Conference on Geriatrics and Gerontology held on 27th and 28th November 2004 at Hotel Ashoka, New Delhi went on smoothly. To be more precise the number of delegates from abroad and various parts of India were much more than we had expected and the interactive session held after each deliberation were worth mentioning as ‘useful’. The rest of the details may be found in the report by General Secretary. But what I gathered and presumed after meeting the delegates in person after the sessions and during Lunch and Banquet is that each member was expressing need for more and more sessions like this to be held in different parts of the country and that they should not be held in metros only. Dr. N. N. Asokan This is actually true and sincere wish but to organize such a conference in a State level or Peripheral branch level is not easy. Although it might feel easier for the local office bearers of the branch concerned. We at the head quarters shall do the selections of the topics and if necessary arrange the speakers. But the funding and running about shall be the responsibility of local office bearers. One could easily get the funds from the Pharma Companies who are now coming forward to help the CME update programme without any restrictions. Prof. O. P. Sharma from Delhi, Dr. H. K. Chopra from Delhi, Dr.G.S Reddy from Pondichery and Myself from Kerala could help you in any branch or those from Geriatric clubs of Doctors, which are very common now among doctors. But still I want to repeat and remind that the aim and motto of this year of Geriatric Society of India is to have more membership. Society is not for the Doctors of Geriatric group but it is for all the doctors, except the pediatricians. So the prime aim of this message is to appeal to increase the membership in every state or town amongst those who are interested to practice of Geriatric Medicine not leaving out the Subspecialties like Geriatric cardiology, diabetology, Orthopedics, Neurology, Psychiatry etc. Together we can make the elderly happy by improving their quality of life.

Regards, Dr.N.N.Asokan

He thanked all the members of Editorial board and those who have contributed chapters in the book. He thanked contributors who have updated their chapters in time, inspite of their busy schedule. Dr. Sharma on this occasion mentioned the addition of new chapters in this book as per need of the time and the developments in the field of Geriatrics, like Quantification of Ageing and Surgical Implants are some of the things unheard of by many of the medical colleagues. Dr. Sharma said it was in the fitness of things to mention legal and constitutional provisions in India about elderly which should be known to people of Medical profession. The social aspects are equally important because Geriatric care is a combination of both medical and Social services. 5 Dr. S. P. Agarwal emphasised that Geriatric Care should not be taken as a burden and rather experienced senior citizens should be considered as assets and utilized properly. He quoted the example of Japan where senior citizens are gainfully employed in alternative professions - other than what they have been doing before superannuation.

Dr. G. Subramaniam Reddy President Elect, Geriatric Society of India

Pondicherry, a small town with nine lakh population, has five medical colleges, one dental college and five para-medical institutions, thus establishing itself as a pioneer state in medical education in the country. The Government General Hospital of Pondicherry, established in 1816 by the erstwhile French regime, is a 1100 bedded principal referral health institution with all medical and surgical super-specialty departments. This hospital has steadily developed over the years into a tertiary referral hospital not only for the people of Pondicherry but also to the neighbouring states. Geriatric Nursing and care for the aged population is not a new concept to the state of Pondicherry, as a Home for the aged and sick people was established way back in 1876.Although the aging population has increased considerably as in the other parts of the world, it is felt that, the awareness and knowledge of Geriatric Medicine and Geriatric Nursing is lacking in our country. The Annual Conference of the Geriatric Society of India (GSI) to be held at Pondicherry from the 23rd to 25th of September 2005, aims at addressing this issue, thus striving to bring an awareness of this specialized branch of Medicine among the medical and nursing fraternity of the country. Renowned Geriatric physicians from India and abroad are being invited as resource persons for this conference. This Conference would be of help not only to the physicians but also to the medical post-graduate students to update their knowledge and to develop an interest in this field of Medicine. It is also proposed to conduct a Geriatric Nursing workshop / CME programme for one day, during this conference. As this branch of Nursing is not well developed in our country, it will be an opportunity for the nursing personnel to get trained in Geriatric Nursing care, by resource persons who will be invited from countries excelling in this particular field. We look forward to the active participation of the medical community of our country in making this Conference a grand success. The historical town of Pondicherry is the capital of the Union territor y of Pondicherry, situated 160 kilometres south of Chennai. The French established their rule in Pondicherry in 1673, and except for brief interludes of English rule, Pondicherry essentially remained an enclave of the French for 250 years till 1954.Constructed like a medieval town of France, Pondicherry retains an aura of French culture with its promenades and boulevards, its stately mansions with tall framed windows and carved pillars. The great visionary from Bengal, Sri Aurobindo, together with the Mother founded his ashram here , which is a living monument today. The fiery Tamil poet and patriot Subrmanya Bharathi and his ardent admirer Bharathidasan lived in this famous town.Pondicherry, described by the late Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru as ‘a peaceful place in this turbulent world‘ is also renowned for Auroville (“The city of Dawn”), famous temples and churches. Its picturesque beaches attract tourists from far and wide. Thus Pondicherry is not only a seat of French culture but also a repository of our Indian tradition. GERIATRIC CARE Edited by: Dr. O. P.
