New administration means new reality for New York health-care providers

Ambitious reform plans for New York’s health-care system include universal coverage and reining in the state’s $45 billion Medicaid bill, according to Peter Epp and Gil Bernhard, managing directors with RSM McGladrey. There are three recommendations for health-care providers. Focus on IT systems. “Adapting to rapid change hinges on IT,” says Epp. “The state is the biggest payer in our market and wants to shift from a service-based to an outcome-based mindset. It wants to emphasize ambulatory over in-patient care. Providers will need to collect, retrieve and report data in new ways – that means building IT systems with the flexibility to adapt.” Redouble compliance efforts. “Crackdowns on fraud and overpayments will be central to the state’s efforts,” says Bernhard. “Providers should make sure their billing, coding and compliance practices and systems are solid.” Keep an eye on Albany. “With plans this ambitious, the devil will be in the details, and those will continue to evolve,” says Epp. “Providers will need to keep in tune with the state’s plans and be part of the dialogue.” RSM McGladrey offers a wealth of resources for providers in this challenging environment. Our resources and range of experience position us to help clients in a complex and demanding industry.” To learn how we can help your company, call 866.753.3761, or e-mail NYoffi[email protected].

LAY OF THE LAND A former copywriter and creative director, Mr. Hall rejoined Macy’s for the third time— this time as parade executive producer—on the night before Thanksgiving in 2000. Though he had worked for the store before, he had never been involved with any of its large-scale events. After accepting the job offer, Mr. Hall walked the parade route from West 77th Street to Herald Square to get a feel for his new position. “I must say that I was terrified,” he recalls. “I had not thought about how they did all of this stuff.” QUICK STUDY Mr. Hall learned quickly. He now oversees four teams: the studio group, which assembles the floats; the development group, which manages marketing partnerships; the creative group, which handles music and costumes; and the operations group, which takes care of street details. “When you’re at the parade, you never think how it comes together,” says Mr. Hall. “That’s the magic of it.” NEW KIDS ON THE BLOCK Mr. Pet benefits Hall recruits 7,000 Macy’s volunteers to help out with Firms start to recognize four-legged family members the parade; 1,800 of them will
