A flexible game system allows players (not software designers) to decide on what rules to enforce, who enforces them, and when. I explore this in the context of digital card games and introduce two design strategies for promoting flexibility. The first strategy is “robustness”. When players want to change the rules of a game, a robust system is able to resist extreme breakdowns that the new rule would provoke. The second is “versatility”. A versatile system can accommodate multiple use-scenarios and can support them very well. To investigate these concepts, first, I engage in reflective design inquiry through the design and implementation of Card Board, a highly flexible digital card game system. Second, via a user study of Card Board, I analyze how players negotiate the rules of play, take ownership of the game experience, and communicate in the course of play. Through a thematic and grounded qualitative analysis, I derive rich descriptions of negotiation, play, and communication. I offer contributions that include criteria for flexibility with sub-principles of robustness and versatility, design recommendations for flexible systems, 3 novel dimensions of design for gameplay and communications, and rich description of game play and rule-negotiation over flexible systems.

This article argues that ethnicity can- not be understood if it is abstracted from concrete social practices, and that analyses of this construct need to be based on ethnographic observation and on the study of actual talk in interaction. This interactionally oriented per- spective is taken to present an analysis of how Italian ethnicity is constructed as a central element in the collective identity of an all-male card playing club. The purpose is to see what strategies can be used to play the card game best. In this paper, we present a fast and secure mental poker protocol. The basic structure is the same as Barnett & Smart’s and Castellà-Roca’s protocols but our encryp- tion scheme is different. With this alternative encryption scheme, our shuffle is not only twice as fast, but it also has different security properties. As such, Barnett & Smart’s and Castellà-Roca’s security proof cannot be applied to our protocol directly. Nevertheless, our protocol is still provably secure under the DDH assumption. The only weak point of our protocol is that reshuffling a small subset of cards might take longer than Barnett & Smart’s and Castellà-Roca’s protocols. Therefore, our protocol is more suitable for card games such as bridge, most poker games, mahjong, hearts, or black jack, which do not require much partial reshuffling. Keywords. These problems include both the difficulty of solving the game’s perfect information variant, and techniques needed to address the fact that bridge is not, in fact, a perfect information game. Gib, the program being described, involves five separate technical advances: partition search, the practical application of Monte Carlo techniques to realistic problems, a focus on achievable sets to solve problems inherent in the Monte Carlo approach, an extension of alpha-beta pruning from total orders to arbitrary distributive lattices, and the use of squeaky wheel optimization to find approximately optimal solutions to cardplay problems. Gib is currently believed to be of approximately expert caliber, and is currently the strongest computer bridge program in the world. 1. The fact that a computer can learn to play Go, Chess or Shogi better than any human player by playing itself, only knowing the rules of the game (i.e. tabula rasa), has many people interested in this fascinating topic (myself included of course!). Also, the fact that experts believe that AlphaZero is developing new strategies in Chess is also quite impressive [4]. For my nal project, I developed a Deep Reinforcement Learning algorithm to play the card game Pedreaux (or Pedro [8]). As a kid growing up, we played a version of Pedro called Pitch with Fives or Catch Five [3], which is the version of this game we will consider for this project. Why is this interesting/hard? First, it is a game with four players, in two teams of two. So we will have four agents playing the game, and two will be cooperating with each other. Second, there are two distinct phases of the game: the bidding phase, then the playing phase. To become procient at playing the game, the agents need to learn to bidbased on their initial hands, and learn how to play the cards after the bidding phase. In addition, it is complex. There are 52 9 initial hands to consider per agent, coupled with a complicated action space, and bidding decisions, which 9 > 3×10 makes the state space too large for tabular methods and one well suited for Deep Reinforcement Learning methods such as those presented in [2, 6].
