Muḥyī al-Dīn Abū ʿAbd Allāh Muḥammad b. ʿAlī b. Muḥammad b. al-ʿArabī (d. 638/1240), commonly known as Ibn ʿArabī, is a great thinker in Islamic thought as well as the founder of the school of Waḥdat al-wujūd (Oneness of Existence). His masterpieces are Fuṣūṣ al-ḥikam (The Bezels of Wisdom) and al-Futūḥāt al-makkiyyah (The Meccan Revelations) which are well known though he wrote many other works during his life.1 Fuṣūṣ al-ḥikam is a magnum opus in the intellectual history of Islam that has influenced the thinkers of posterity, especially Sufis, philosophers, Shiʿa scholars, as well as intellectuals in the contemporary world, whether Sunnī, Shīʿī, or non-Muslim. There have been many commentaries written on Fuṣūṣ al-ḥikam by scholars of the Oneness of Existence (i.e. Ibn ʿArabīʼs school) and they continue to be written even to this day. This thesis will therefore look at this work mainly, because its influence on Islamic philosophy has been as significant as its secondary literature has been heterogeneous. The divine names (asmāʾ Allāh al-ḥusnā), the main topic of this thesis, function as one of the ways by which human beings, as limited beings, know God who is the Creator. These divine names are found in the Qurʾān: “The most beautiful names belong to God: so call on him by them” (Q7:180).2 Since God has the most beautiful names, the gap between the Creator and the created comes to be seen more clearly. Based on Ḥadīth that God has ninety-nine names, the history and context of the adoption of the divine names has been discussed.3 These ninety-nine divine names selected from the Qurʾān represent divine 1 O. This paper attempts to provide a survey into the issue of money in Islam. Specifically, it looks at the views of Muslim scholars (primarily past fiqh scholars), on whether money has to be limited to gold and silver or not and discusses some implications of the findings of this brief survey on present day opinions. In this connection it discusses some general points on gold and silver as money, from a historical and ‘contextual’ perspective, followed by some points that are agreed upon by the majority of scholars. It also compares the views of scholars who take the position that only gold and silver can be used as money and the evidences given to support their stand with the views of those who do not limit money to only gold and silver, together with their evidences. 1. Introduction The discussion of money is certainly as old as the economics discipline itself. Early definitions of the discipline were even focused on money/wealth while most measurements today in economics are based on some money value.     CEU eTD Collection ABSTRACT The aim of my inquiry is to examine Ikhwan al-Safa’s (“Brethren of Purity”) creationist arguments against the Aristotelian doctrine of the world’s eternity. Arguing for creationism, Ikhwan al-Safa employ the Neoplatonic emanation theory as it is developed in their tenth- century Arabic encyclopedia. However, some historians have claimed that Ikhwan al-Safa’s emanation theory is a veiled attack on creationism that embraces the Aristotelian doctrine of the world’s eternity. Ikhwan al-Safa’s philosophical project is thus characterized as a project that aims either to reconcile or propagate a presupposed conflict between philosophy and religion, expressed for instance in this tension between Aristotelianism and creationism. This characterization allegedly lurks behind opposing historical testimonies regarding Ikhwan al- Safa’s identity and doctrine which I claim is contemporarily reproduced in similar terms with Ikhwan al-Safa’s scholarship. While both historical and contemporary characterizations tempt a double reading approach to Ikhwan al-Safa’s philosophy, I consider their philosophical project within the tradition of early Arabic philosophy, whose enterprise can be characterized as a natural theology project which does not presuppose a conflict between philosophy and religion. While Ikhwan al-Safa identify the philosophical tension between creationism and the world’s eternity doctrine, I demonstrate that Ikhwan al-Safa use emanation theory rather to substantiate their creationist arguments in light of their overall identification of creation with emanation. Consequently, Ikhwan al-Safa’s reception of Aristotelian and Neoplatonic sources should be recognized as a particular CEU eTD Collection philosophical synthesis of both with creationism, for they did not merely transmit these sources, but assimilated them into the Islamic context of 10th century Iraq.

Because mysticism exists outside of religious institutions and hierarchies, female mystics could receive opportunities for public expression often prohibited by Medieval Islamic societies. Islamic Mysticism, or Sufism, has a long history of prominent female mystics. However, Sufi thought in the 12th and 13th centuries was certainly affected by the misogynistic influences of the greater society. In order to explore the ideological conflict within medieval Sufism, between the potential for gender egalitarianism within mysticism and the influences of patriarchy, this paper examines the theology of two prominent Sufi mystics, Ibn ‘Arabi and al-Ghazali, and proposes some explanations for the large disparity between the two Sufis’ opinions on gender and sexuality. Specifically, al-Ghazali fully supports the subjugation of women, and even equates the perpetuation of patriarchy to religious piety. This paper argues that, living under the politically turbulent and authoritarian reign of the Seljuks in Iraq, during the late 11th and early 12th centuries, al-Ghazali was particularly disinclined to question traditional orthodoxy, particularly with regard to gender. Ibn ‘Arabi, by contrast, accepts the spiritual, intellectual, and legal equality of women to a remarkable extent. Raised in Muslim Spain in the late 12th and early 13th centuries, Ibn ‘Arabi was exposed to female mystics as teachers and experienced little political pressure to conform to traditional doctrine.

Box 19282, United Arab Emirates; [email protected] * Correspondence: [email protected] Abstract: This paper constructs a culturally appropriate model for Muslim women’s empowerment in management and leadership positions that addresses sustainability goals of quality education, gender equality, economic growth and reducing inequalities, as well as national and cultural differences from Western women’s empowerment models. The approach to model building begins with two sources of evidence for women’s empowerment—first, the empowerment of women recognised in the Qur’an and Sunnah, and in the historical-biographical record, particularly in the early Islamic period that draws to some extent on hermeneutics. This is followed by identifying four approaches that can be used in constructing a comprehensive model of Muslim women’s empowerment: Bourdieu’s social, cultural and intellectual capital theory; multiple modernities theory that recognises societal diversity; cultural security arguments for the preservation of cultures; and postcolonial critiques that argue for diversity through decolonising. The main argument of this paper is that sustainability goals cannot be achieved without a model appropriate to the valuational, cultural and societal context in which women are educated and work.
