  • Grey Morality of the Colonized Subject in Postwar Japanese Cinema and Contemporary Manga
EITHER 'SHINING WHITE OR BLACKEST BLACK': GREY MORALITY OF THE COLONIZED SUBJECT IN POSTWAR JAPANESE CINEMA AND CONTEMPORARY MANGA Elena M. Aponte A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF ARTS May 2017 Committee: Khani Begum, Advisor Kristen Rudisill © 2017 Elena M. Aponte All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Khani Begum, Advisor The cultural and political relationship between Japan and the United States is often praised for its equity, collaboration, and mutual respect. To many, the alliance between Japan and the United States serves as a testament for overcoming a violent and antagonistic past. However, the impact of the United States occupation and the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki is rarely discussed in light of this alliance. The economic revival, while important to Japan’s reentry into the global market, inevitably obscured continuing paternalistic interactions between Japan and the United States. Using postcolonial theory from Homi K. Bhahba, Frantz Fanon, and Hiroshi Yoshioka as a foundation, this study examines the ways Japan was colonized during and after the seven-year occupation by the United States. The following is a close assessment of two texts and their political significance at two specific points in history. Akira Kurosawa's1948 noir film Drunken Angel (Yoidore Tenshi) shaped the identity of postwar Japan; Yasuhiro Nightow’s Trigun manga series navigates cultural amnesia and American exceptionalism during the 1990s after the Bubble Economy fell into recession in 1995. These texts are worthy of simultaneous assessment because of the ways they incorporate American archetypes, iconography, and themes into their work while still adhering to Japanese cultural concerns.

Read Ebook {PDF EPUB} Trigun Maximum Volume 8 Silent Ruin by Yasuhiro Nightow ISBN 13: 9781593074524. Okay, now this is just getting scary. Knives has imprisoned Vash, and now he's going around gathering plants. By plants, I don't mean green things growing out of the ground, but instead those angelic, humanoid, power plant beings that make it possible for humans to live on the planet Gunsmoke. Vash and Knives are themselves a form of plant, and have the same power, but what will knives do with this huge power supply? Meanwhile, things are looking pretty tough for Wolfwood. And speaking of Nick, this volume contains a special spin-off chapter based on our favorite preacher slash gunslinger. Learn a little more about the man in the suit with the confessional helmet! "synopsis" may belong to another edition of this title. Yasuhiro Nightow is a Japanese manga artist and game creator who created the anime and manga Trigun . Read Ebook {PDF EPUB} Reversible Volume 1 by Digital Manga Publishing Youka Nitta. Youka Nitta (新田祐克 ) is a popular yaoi manga-ka (Japanese comics creator). Her first manga story, "GROUPIE", was published by Biblos in 1997. [1] She believes in characters not always having to be the seme or uke, [2] and her Embracing Love has been called the first title available with a "reversible" couple in English. [3] In 2008 it was reported that Nitta had infringed upon the copyright of advertising photographs by tracing them for illustrations in her manga Embracing Love ; she subsequently apologized for the misuse, as did her publisher. [4] Nitta attended the 2002 Yaoi-Con [5] and the 2006 New York Comic Con but cancelled her planned appearance at the 2008 Yaoi-Con in the aftermath of the tracing scandal. [6] Reversible: Volume 1 (Yaoi Anthology) Reversible is a boys’ love and yaoi manga series featuring manga (comics) from doujinshi (self-published and sometimes amateur) manga creators. Reversible , Vol. 1 contains 11 short stories from a varied group of creators, some of them making their U.S. debut. All the stories share a common theme – that of the aggressor and the submissive, which boys’ love readers will recognize as the seme (the boy on top) and his uke (the bottom). The stories in Reversible flip that, and sometimes the boy who is supposed to be the bottom (the smaller one, the effeminate one, the bishounen one, an angel…) ends up being the aggressor or at least the initiator of romance and sometimes sex. By far the best of the lot is the opening story, “Tell Me You Like Me” by Saki Takara .
