Youka Nitta (新田祐克 ) is a popular yaoi manga-ka (Japanese comics creator). Her first manga story, "GROUPIE", was published by Biblos in 1997. [1] She believes in characters not always having to be the seme or uke, [2] and her Embracing Love has been called the first title available with a "reversible" couple in English. [3] In 2008 it was reported that Nitta had infringed upon the copyright of advertising photographs by tracing them for illustrations in her manga Embracing Love ; she subsequently apologized for the misuse, as did her publisher. [4] Nitta attended the 2002 Yaoi-Con [5] and the 2006 New York Comic Con but cancelled her planned appearance at the 2008 Yaoi-Con in the aftermath of the tracing scandal. [6] Reversible: Volume 1 (Yaoi Anthology) Reversible is a boys’ love and yaoi manga series featuring manga (comics) from doujinshi (self-published and sometimes amateur) manga creators. Reversible , Vol. 1 contains 11 short stories from a varied group of creators, some of them making their U.S. debut. All the stories share a common theme – that of the aggressor and the submissive, which boys’ love readers will recognize as the seme (the boy on top) and his uke (the bottom). The stories in Reversible flip that, and sometimes the boy who is supposed to be the bottom (the smaller one, the effeminate one, the bishounen one, an angel…) ends up being the aggressor or at least the initiator of romance and sometimes sex. By far the best of the lot is the opening story, “Tell Me You Like Me” by Saki Takara . It’s the tale of Nakahara , an office worker who is in love with his stern supervisor, Chouno . The story has wonderful dramatic intensity and conflict because the “happy ending” is in doubt until the end of the story. In “Catch,” the younger guy, Mochizuki , is the one who puts the movies on the older, but clueless, Tsuruta . Some of the stories are a little shallow ( Goroh ’s “Perfect Age”). The prettiest art is in “Happiness, Fun, Kindness” by Midori Noshiogi , the story of a human who seduces an angel visiting this world for the first time. Anthologies (from television series to books) have been described as difficult to sell precisely because they offer too many smaller pieces instead of one larger piece by the same creator(s) or instead of focusing on one narrative. Reversible is one of those anthologies that is like a box chocolates; you never know what you will get, but if you like chocolate, you are bound to find several piece that you like. Reversible will make you want another box of this boys’ love chocolate. Digital Manga Publishing Announce New Licenses. At their panel during Anime Expo this week, Digital Manga Publishing announced a range of new license acquisitions, as reported by Anime News Network and Mania.com. The list of new licenses is as follows: Demon City Shinjuku by Hideyuki Kikuchi — coming 2011 in a complete single edition novel format Countdown 7 Days by Kemuri Karakara Houou Gakuen Misoragumi by Aki Arara (4 volumes long, starting in 2011) Border by Kazuma Kodaka, JP pub Med-i-ation and DMP is going to try and do simultaneous releases with Japan Kusatta Kyo Shino Houteishiki by Kazuma Kodaka will begin a 5-volume omnibus release Gochisosama by C.J. Michalski Boku no Shiru Anata no Hanashi by Tsuta Suzuki Sabaku no Oujisama by Shushushu Sakurai. While they were at it, DMP also shed some light on upcoming releases of current licenses: Itazura No Kiss Volume 3 — due out this summer with Volume 4 in Winter 2010 Yashakiden by Hideyuki Kikuchi Volume 3 — oversize edition in Winter 2010 Vampire Hunter D Volume 5 — Winter 2010 Wolf God Voumel 1 by Ai Tenkawa — Summer 2010 Alice the 101st Vol. 1 by Chigusa Kawai (shoujo title) — Summer 2010 Finder Vol. 1 by Ayane Yamano — late August or September 2010; Vol. 2 this Fall The Tyrant Falls in Love by Hinako Takanaga — August 2010 Kizuna Deluxe Vol. 1 by Kazuma Kodaka, — Fall 2010, deluxe edition two volumes in 2011. Under Grand Hotel Vol. 1 by Mika Sadahiro, — Summer 2010. Additionally, DMP have also teamed up with VIZ and Studio Pierrot inn order to provide Naruto Shippuuden animation cels for sale via both their convention booths and their website. Aponte All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Khani Begum, Advisor The cultural and political relationship between Japan and the United States is often praised for its equity, collaboration, and mutual respect. To many, the alliance between Japan and the United States serves as a testament for overcoming a violent and antagonistic past. However, the impact of the United States occupation and the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki is rarely discussed in light of this alliance. The economic revival, while important to Japan’s reentry into the global market, inevitably obscured continuing paternalistic interactions between Japan and the United States. Using postcolonial theory from Homi K. Bhahba, Frantz Fanon, and Hiroshi Yoshioka as a foundation, this study examines the ways Japan was colonized during and after the seven-year occupation by the United States. The following is a close assessment of two texts and their political significance at two specific points in history. Akira Kurosawa's1948 noir film Drunken Angel (Yoidore Tenshi) shaped the identity of postwar Japan; Yasuhiro Nightow’s Trigun manga series navigates cultural amnesia and American exceptionalism during the 1990s after the Bubble Economy fell into recession in 1995. These texts are worthy of simultaneous assessment because of the ways they incorporate American archetypes, iconography, and themes into their work while still adhering to Japanese cultural concerns.

Before the release of the popular manga Trigun , Nightow studied social science and then majored in media studies. Nightow became popular in the United States thanks to the US release of Trigun. Trigun , the TV series, had a limited broadcast run in 1998. Nightow also created the characters and story for the Sega/Red Entertainment anime and third-person shooter video game series Gungrave . The author lives in Tokyo, Japan.

    CELEBRATING 25 YEARS OF MANGA 1988: Dark Horse releases its first manga, Kazuhisa Iwata’sGodzilla , as a six-issue comics series. 1988: Studio Proteus begins a long association with Dark Horse, begin- ning with the sci-fi comics seriesOutlanders . In conjunction with Studio Proteus, Dark Horse would later publish such notable titles as Akira and Ghost in the Shell. 1989: Dark Horse releases its first manga trade paperback collec- tion, Outlanders Volume 1. No ISBN or BISAC codes are needed, as graphic novels aren’t sold in bookstores yet! 1993: Weekly Super Comic Maker, a weekly comic collecting the best Dark Horse offerings, is released in Japan. Dark Horse is the only American publisher to have done this. 1993: Adam Warren’s The Dirty Pair, a licensed American adaptation of the original Japanese series, comes out.
