Edited by the author. 1 CLAIMING SPACE IN CASABLANCA Abstract This thesis seeks to provide exploratory insights into the transformation, adaptation and adaptation processes of post-WWII modernist mass-housing projects, using Casablanca’s laboratory neighbourhoods as a case-study. A historical contextualisation of Casablanca’s development depicts a city shaped by the modernist principles of the Athens Charter. Yet, over the space of half a century, the urban tissue has extensively evolved – both from a social and physical perspective – shaped by its inhabitants and in a fashion that the urban visionaries had not foreseen. Results of a five-week fieldwork focusing on the Hay Mohammadi neighbourhood aim to provide social perspectives into the logics behind these extensive bottom-up, informal dwelling transformations. Using an in-depth, qualitative semi-structured interview process with local inhabitants and other stakeholders, it has been found that the underlying reasons for occupant’s appropriation are multiple, and originate from complex and variegated socio-economic, traditional and cultural interplays. Throughout our analysis, we highlight the underexplored relevance of cultural factors in inhabitants’ housing practices. We also underline the often overlooked importance of considering ‘immobility’ in housing choice: in-situ transformation is as viable a strategy as moving out, especially in contexts where regulatory, political and economic conditions facilitate such practices. These explanations have implications for our appreciation of modernist housing projects and their suitability for 1950s Casablanca, and hold valuable insights for future research on similar neighbourhoods in Europe and the Netherlands, often populated by new migrant communities from the Maghreb. The data are obtained from the Greater Casablanca Cancer Registry (GCCR)[1]. 4957 cancer cases have been mapped (2245 in men and 2712 in women). Cancer mapping allowed to represent the relative risk at the level of 32 communes in the greater Casablanca region. The high-risk areas are: Oulad salah, Ain Harrouda, Tit Melli and Anfa. Analysis of the spatial distribution of cancer shows significant differences between different areas. However, a clear spatial autocorrelation is observed, which can be of great interest and importance to researchers for future epidemiological studies, and to policymakers for applying preventive measures.

Nos racines profondément ancrées dans son sol, notre indéfectible attachement à cette ville, à sa terre, à son climat, à son vacarme, à ses tares et avatars nous ont entraîné, de bon gré, de mauvais gré, dans une entreprise enchanteresse que nous ne sommes pas assignée comme objectif au départ. Notre incursion dans son histoire ancienne, dans sa géographie surtout sociale, était pour nous un moment de bonheur extrême, plutôt d’extase. Nous n’en revenons pas des quelques lectures que nous avons faites, et surtout des témoignages poignants que nous avons collectés auprès de personnes qui ont vécu les bonheurs, mais aussi et surtout les malheurs de Casablanca. Ainsi avons-nous aimé partager ne serait-ce que quelques uns de ces moments de bonheur avec nos lecteurs, soucieux de les mettre dans le bain de la situation historique, géo-urbanistique, économique et sociale qui se répercutent indubitablement sur la situation linguistique que nous nous proposons de décrire.

    MOROCCO A Guide to Its Educational System and Advice for the Admission and Placement of Students Educated in Morocco Kathleen Trayte Freeman International Consultants of Delaware February 2010 My first experience with the Moroccan educational system occurred when I was a Peace Corps volunteer in Morocco in the early 1980s. I taught English at Lycée Hassan Ad-Dakhil in Guercif, a very small town on the main east-west highway about 100 kilometers west of the Algerian border. At that time, Morocco was still in the process of Arabization of the curriculum, and the Ministry of Education had just begun to develop a textbook for English classes at the lycée level. Because there was no textbook available, my roommate and I spent every night creating lesson plans and writing out exercises on large pieces of paper because we were restricted to one stencil per year for mimeographs. I still have the “copy books” for which one student in each class was responsible every week so that the lessons taught were available for students who were absent or needed extra review. Today, Arabization of the curriculum is complete, and English textbooks have been developed and are in use in all three years of the lycée . Peace Corps volunteers no longer teach at lycées , but rather at teacher training schools where they prepare future teachers of English. These are the habitats of all deprived of healthy sanitary conditions and judged precarious from the perspective humanitarian and below the acceptable. The majority of the inhabi- tants of these slums are from the rural exodus with insufficient income to meet the basic needs of daily life. Faced with this situation and to eradicate these habitats, the Moroccan government has launched since 2004 an entire program to create cities without slums (C.W.S.) to resettle or relocate families. Indeed the process control and monitoring of this program requires first identifying and detecting spatial habitats. To achieve these tasks, conventional methods such as information gathering, mapping, use of databases and statistics often have shown their limits and are sometimes outdated. It is within this framework and that of the great German Morocco project “Urban agriculture as an integrative factor of development that fits our project de- tection of slums in Casablanca.
