Previously, the top amateur team in the association to which the league was affiliated was included in the competition. But it has since been de cided to exclude amateur teams. Difficulties arose over the years in seasons where one club would win more than one competition. Com petitors in such cases would be fewer than the required number of clubs. The sponsors wanted a certain number of games played over a spe cified period. This opened the compe tition to controversy because of the inclusion of clubs who were, in fact, not champions. The format for the Ohlsson’s Challenge, agreed on between the NSL and the sponsor, sought to maintain the tradition of pitting the previous season’s best teams against each other on a knockout basis. An eight-club competition was decided on. The sponsor explained the format as follows: “In the first year of the Rodney Charles clears from Julian Prien. His first efforts were for St Martin School and the Danger ous Darkies in Mbabane. He has always been a goalkeeper. After matriculating at the end of 1981, he left Mbabane for Manzini, where he played for Manzini Wan derers, a professional club. By 1983 he had made the Swazi land national team, but was unfortu nate to break his right hand during a training session. He was out of ac tion for the second half of the sea son. In 1984 he was back in action, and led the Wanderers to victory in the Swaziland International Trade Fair tournament. He was named Man of the Series. He was Swaziland’s Footballer of the Year in 1984 and 1985, and the first-choice national goalkeeper. Shongwe joined Kaizer Chiefs early in 1986. As their regular first- choice keeper, he featured in his third cup final with them in the Ohls- son’s Challenge. He first appeared in a final with Chiefs in the 1986 JPS KO final against Moroka Swallows. He was the goalkeeper in the 1987 BP Top Eight final. The 1987 Challenge was played over four weekends - from March 28 to April 25. Chiefs were again in unbeatable form, perhaps in better form than in the Top Eight. They opened the competition against Leeds at Ellis Park. The Amakhosi dominated the newly- promoted Durban team but only ma naged to win by a solitary goal. This was largely due to the brilli ant form of Leeds’ goalkeeper, Neil Blanckenberg, who pulled off a number of spectacular saves until he was finally beaten by Doctor Khu- malo in the 77th minute. Rangers were drawn against Bush Bucks, whom they beat in a pen alty shootout (4-3) at Umlazi after the teams were deadlocked 2-2 after extra time.
