Bolt Brings the Thunder in Russian Nationals Claims No1 in Freestyle From: Tim Foley [email protected] Subject: “Bolt” Brings the Thunder in Russian Nationals, Claims No.1 in Freestyle World Rankings Date: May 31, 2016 at 5:55 PM To: [email protected] “Bolt” Brings the Thunder in Russian Nationals, Claims No.1 in Freestyle World Rankings By William May CORSIER-SUR-VEVEY (May 31) – European champion Anzor BOLTUKAEV (RUS) brought the thunder to five-time world champion Khadshimurad GATSALOV (RUS) over the weekend and claimed the top spot at 97kg in the United World Wrestling Freestyle Rankings for May. Boltukaev, who came to the Russian nationals ranked No.4, struck with a quick double-leg takedown 40 seconds into the tourney finale. Then, as top-ranked Gatsalov squirmed to get away, Boltkaev locked in a cross-ankle grip to wrap up a technical fall in only 62 seconds. Boltukaev’s win was a bolt of lightning as the qualification events for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games came to an end in Istanbul and many wrestlers turned their attention to the next phase of preparations for Rio de Janeiro. Another group of wrestlers, meanwhile, saw their path to Rio come to a dead end after testing positive for traces of meldonium at the Asian and European Olympic Games qualifying events -- most notably European champion Magomedmurad GADZHIEV (POL). In line with these developments, the wrestlers in question have also been dropped from the United World Wrestling rankings. Boris NOVACHKOV (BUL) Meanwhile, 2014 European bronze medalist Boris NOVACHKOV (BUL) made the biggest jump in the freestyle rankings for May, going from unranked to No.11 at 65kg, with a win in the “last chance” Olympic Games qualifying tournament in Istanbul. Also joining the rankings for action in May, Albert SARITOV (ROU) and Aleksander KHOTSIANIVSKI (UKR) qualified for Rio 2016 with victories in Istanbul at 97kg and 125kg. Saritov climbs to No.13 while Khotsianivski comes in at No.14. Saritov follows fellow Russian world team member Georgi KETOEV (ARM) onto the rankings by qualifying a new country for Rio 2016. Ketoev won the Ulaanbaatar qualifier at 97kg at the end of April. Ketoev, one of six freestyle world champs of Russia in 2007, earned a bronze medal at Beijing 2008. Saritov took the bronze medal at the 2011 world meet in Istanbul but was subsequently replaced by Anzor URISHEV (RUS) for London 2012. Wrestlers in the rankings are listed by name, country code, most notable or most recent result over the last 12 months, and their position in the previous rankings. Vladimir KHINCHEGASHVILI (GEO) 57kg – 2013 junior world champ Suleyman ATLI (TUR), buoyed by a boisterous hometown crowd in Istanbul, rolled to four wins in the “last chance” Rio 2016 qualifier to climb seven rungs to No.10 in the rankings. 1. • Snyder Petriashvili Open 2017 with Wins January FS Rankings In
From: Tim Foley [email protected] Subject: Snyder, Petriashvili Open 2017 with Wins, January FS Rankings in Turmoil Underneath Date: February 7, 2017 at 8:49 AM To: [email protected] Snyder, Petriashvili Open 2017 with Wins, January FS Rankings in Turmoil Underneath By William May // Photo: Gabor Martin CORSIER-SUR-VEVEY (January 31) – Rio 2016 champion Kyle SNYDER (USA) and bronze medalist Geno PETRIASHVILI (GEO) kicked off 2017 with victories at Grand Prix events, solidifying their claims to top positions in the United World Wrestling freestyle rankings for January. Snyder rolled to victory at the Yarygin Grand Prix, one year after finishing third in Krasnoyarsk (RUS), to head into the new year with his No.1 ranking at 97kg intact. Petriashvili, meanwhile, prevailed in Paris to support his claim to No.3 at 125kg. Yet, while only a handful of wrestlers in the top 10 of each category were in action in January, many of the medalists in Krasnoyarsk and Paris were unranked or positioned in the lower half of the rankings. This resulted in some churn in the second 10 as they look ahead to the continental championships this spring. World military champion Alan KHUGAEV (RUS) made the biggest leap in the rankings with a win at 125kg in Krasnoyarsk, going from unranked to No.8. Khugaev notched a 3-2 win in the final over Anzor BOLTUKAEV (RUS), who spent three months atop the 97kg rankings in 2016 before slumping to 11th in Rio de Janeiro. Also, at the Yarygin Grand Prix, Dauren KURUGLIEV (RUS) climbed one place to No.7, after defeating Mahammasjavad EBRAHIMIZIVLAEI (IRI), 4-3, in the final at 86kg.

From: United World Wrestling Press [email protected] Subject: Wrestling Returns with Individual World Cup in Belgrade, Dec. 12-18 Date: December 11, 2020 at 1:00 PM To: [email protected] Links: UWW LIVE Preview Show Individual World Cup Event Page Greco-Roman Brackets BELGRADE, Serbia (December 10) -- The 2020 Individual World Cup gets underway Saturday in Belgrade, Serbia, with 505 wrestlers representing 51 different countries. Thirty weight categories in three styles will be contested over seven days of competition. The Individual World Cup is serving as a substitute event for the 2020 World Championships. The event was canceled after not fulfilling the criteria set forth by the UWW Bureau. The criteria included having at least 8 of 10 of the top nations from the 2019 World Championships and 70% of total athletes participate in 2020. The Individual World Cup represents international wrestling's return to competition and will lay the groundwork for safety protocols and countermeasures around all competitions. This will be vital to ensure a safe environment for future competitions in the lead up to the Tokyo Olympics. The event has a prize pool of 300,000 Swiss Francs, which will be divided evenly across the 30 weight categories. Thirty-one returning world medalists, including five returning world champions, are entered in the field. Olympic champion Davor STEFANEK (SRB) will compete at 67kg (Photo: Gabor MARTIN, United World Wrestling) The Individual World Cup opens Saturday with Greco-Roman competition, which will be headlined by four Rio Olympic champions: Artur ALEKSANYAN (ARM) at 97kg, Davit CHAKVETADZE (RUS) at 87kg, Davor STEFANEK (SRB) at 67kg and Roman VLASOV (RUS) at 77kg.
