From: Tim Foley [email protected] Subject: Snyder, Petriashvili Open 2017 with Wins, January FS Rankings in Turmoil Underneath Date: February 7, 2017 at 8:49 AM To: [email protected] Snyder, Petriashvili Open 2017 with Wins, January FS Rankings in Turmoil Underneath By William May // Photo: Gabor Martin CORSIER-SUR-VEVEY (January 31) – Rio 2016 champion Kyle SNYDER (USA) and bronze medalist Geno PETRIASHVILI (GEO) kicked off 2017 with victories at Grand Prix events, solidifying their claims to top positions in the United World Wrestling freestyle rankings for January. Snyder rolled to victory at the Yarygin Grand Prix, one year after finishing third in Krasnoyarsk (RUS), to head into the new year with his No.1 ranking at 97kg intact. Petriashvili, meanwhile, prevailed in Paris to support his claim to No.3 at 125kg. Yet, while only a handful of wrestlers in the top 10 of each category were in action in January, many of the medalists in Krasnoyarsk and Paris were unranked or positioned in the lower half of the rankings. This resulted in some churn in the second 10 as they look ahead to the continental championships this spring. World military champion Alan KHUGAEV (RUS) made the biggest leap in the rankings with a win at 125kg in Krasnoyarsk, going from unranked to No.8. Khugaev notched a 3-2 win in the final over Anzor BOLTUKAEV (RUS), who spent three months atop the 97kg rankings in 2016 before slumping to 11th in Rio de Janeiro. Also, at the Yarygin Grand Prix, Dauren KURUGLIEV (RUS) climbed one place to No.7, after defeating Mahammasjavad EBRAHIMIZIVLAEI (IRI), 4-3, in the final at 86kg. -

From: United World Wrestling Press [email protected] Subject: Maskevich Stuns Chakvetadze, Russia Bags 3 Gold Medals Date: December 13, 2020 at 4:02 PM To: [email protected] Maskevich Stuns Chakvetadze, Russia Bags 3 Gold Medals Links: Day 2 Photos Interview with Davor STEFANEK (SRB) BELGRADE, Serbia (December 13) -- Russia made a strong statement Sunday at the Individual World Cup, winning three of the first five gold medals, but it was a young star from Belarus who stole the show in the final match of the night in Belgrade, Serbia. After Russia started the night 3-for-3 in Sunday's Greco-Roman finals, Kiryl MASKEVICH (BLR), a decided underdog, stepped on the mat to face Russian Olympic champion Davit CHAKVETADZE (RUS). The 22-year-old Belarusian was poised and confident, scoring the match's first point off a passivity. He extended his lead to 3-0 when Chakvetadze did not get set in the par terre position. Maskevich then lifted Chakvetadze from par terre and executed a five-point suplay before turning him for good measure to claim a 10-0 technical superiority in the first period. Winning gold medals for Russia on Sunday were Roman VLASOV (77kg), Emin SEFERSHAEV (55kg) and Nazir ABDULLAEV (67kg). Roman VLASOV (RUS) after winning gold at 77kg (Photo: Kadir Caliskan, UWW) Vlasov, a two-time Olympic champion, hit a big throw on his way to a 6-1 victory over Zoltan LEVAI (HUN) in the 77kg finals. Vlasov scored first off a passivity and then executed a five-point throw to take a commanding 6-0 lead in the first period. -

Vlasov Seven of Eight World Champs Top Preolympic Grecoroman
From: Tim Foley [email protected] Subject: Vlasov, Seven of Eight World Champs Top Pre-Olympic Greco-Roman Rankings Date: July 28, 2016 at 7:10 PM To: [email protected] Vlasov, Seven of Eight World Champs Top Pre-Olympic Greco-Roman Rankings By Bill May, United World Wrestling CORSIER-SUR-VEVEY (July 28) – London 2012 gold medalist Roman VLASOV (RUS) closed out the 2016 “regular season” with a triumph in Madrid as seven world champions head to the Rio 2016 Olympic Games on top of the United World Wrestling rankings for Greco-Roman. Vlasov, who was welcomed to 2016 with a shock loss at the Ivan Poddubny tourney in January, capped pre-Olympic preparations with an 8-0 technical fall over fellow Rio qualifier Yurisandy HERNANDEZ RIOS (CUB) in the 75kg final at the Grand Prix of Spain. In addition to Vlasov’s win in Madrid, three more world champions and rankings leaders were also in action in July, wrapping up their Rio 2016 regimen with victories at the German Grand Prix in Dortmund. Local favorite Frank STAEBLER (GER) stopped 2015 world bronze medalist Artem SURKOV (RUS), 2-1 for the 66kg crown and his third tournament title since winning the world title in September. Turkey’s world champion duo of Selcuk CEBI (80kg) and Riza KAYAALP (130kg) also recorded victories in Dortmund for some momentum heading into Rio 2016. Cebi, who qualified for Rio at 75kg, edged KIM Hyeon-Woo (KOR), 3-1, in the 80kg final to ensure himself the top spot in this non-Olympic weight category.
