Brasília 2014 AGRADECIMENTOS Foi difícil chegar até aqui. Sinceramente? And I obviously have to thank Todd who unwittingly helped me through a lot with his music and his way to see life. Thanks for letting me use your texts and pick your brain. And a huge THANK YOU for my Facebook friends for all over the world, specially Janette, Attila, Vani, Timi, Tiana, Jodz, Jax and Gina: you guys rock more than I could say. ABSTRACT This paper is the outcome of study and research about translation of orality, and about translation of one of the new digital text genres, the blog, and its use. The objective of the paper is to present a translation of Todd Kerns’ blog that transmits the orality feature of the original text. Throughout the development of the paper, Paulo Henriques Britto’s ideas regarding how to deal with orality in translation were used. It was verified, during the research phase, that the existing material on the new digital text genres is still very scarce, especially material on the translation of said genres, which resulted in a bigger challenge when translating the text. Key words: Blog, orality, dialogue translation, orality marks, digital genres.

PERFORMED IDENTITIES: HEAVY METAL MUSICIANS BETWEEN 1984 AND 1991 Bradley C. Klypchak A Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY May 2007 Committee: Dr. Jeffrey A. Brown, Advisor Dr. John Makay Graduate Faculty Representative Dr. Ron E. Shields Dr. Don McQuarie © 2007 Bradley C. Klypchak All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Dr. Jeffrey A. Brown, Advisor Between 1984 and 1991, heavy metal became one of the most publicly popular and commercially successful rock music subgenres. The focus of this dissertation is to explore the following research questions: How did the subculture of heavy metal music between 1984 and 1991 evolve and what meanings can be derived from this ongoing process? How did the contextual circumstances surrounding heavy metal music during this period impact the performative choices exhibited by artists, and from a position of retrospection, what lasting significance does this particular era of heavy metal merit today? A textual analysis of metal- related materials fostered the development of themes relating to the selective choices made and performances enacted by metal artists. These themes were then considered in terms of gender, sexuality, race, and age constructions as well as the ongoing negotiations of the metal artist within multiple performative realms. Occurring at the juncture of art and commerce, heavy metal music is a purposeful construction. Metal musicians made performative choices for serving particular aims, be it fame, wealth, or art. These same individuals worked within a greater system of influence. Metal bands were the contracted employees of record labels whose own corporate aims needed to be recognized.

Tours roll across the coun- try like mobile homes in a Florida hurricane. The most memo- rable for this magazine/bar owner were the Warped Tour and Wakestock, where such bands as Bad Religion, Billy Talent, Alexisonfire, Closet Monster, The Trews and Crowned King had audiences in mosh-pit frenzies. At Wakestock, in Wasaga Beach, Ont., Gasoline, Fox Racing, and Bluenotes rocked so hard at their two-day private cottage party that local authorities shut down the stage after Magneta Lane and Flashlight Brown. Poor Moneen didn't get to crush the eardrums of the drunken revellers. That was day one! Day two was an even bigger party with the live music again shut down. The Reason, Moneen and Crowned King owned the patio until Alexisonfire and their crew rolled into party. Gasoline would also like to thank Chuck (see cover story) and other UN officials for making sure that the boys in Sum41 made it back to the Bovine for another cocktail, despite the nearby mortar and gunfire during their Warchild excursion. • Kerns Signature Model “Anti-Star Vi” Guitar
Media Contact: Adrian O’Brien. Ph: 604-298-8111. Em: [email protected] www.prestigeguitars.com FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE PRESTIGE ANNOUNCES TODD “DAMMIT” KERNS SIGNATURE MODEL “ANTI-STAR VI” GUITAR January 18th, 2017, Vancouver BC, Canada Prestige Guitars Ltd. is proud to announce the Todd “DAMMIT” Kerns, Signature Anti-Star VI Guitar. Todd “DAMMIT” Kerns, is best known as bass player/backing vocalist of SLASH feat Myles Kennedy and The Conspirators. He is also the front man and guitarist for legendary Canadian rock band Age Of Electric, and a multi-instrumentalist, singer, songwriter and producer. Basically Todd does it all and rarely, if ever, slows down. The Todd Kerns Signature Model is set to be unveiled at Winter NAMM 2017, in Anaheim CA. The Signature Todd ‘DAMMIT’ Kerns Anti-Star VI Guitar is the 6 string guitar counterpart to the original Prestige Anti-Star Bass. As Todd spends an almost equal amount of time playing bass and six-string and singing lead in a number of projects including Legendary Canadian Rock Act – “Age Of Electric”, it only made sense for him to have a guitar to ensure that he is rarely without a Prestige in hand. The Anti-Star neck through design was a direct collaboration between Todd ‘DAMMIT’ Kerns and the Prestige Guitars design team and is an absolute embodiment of the playing style Todd is known for. Straight ahead, full-force, rock n roll. The Anti-Star VI Guitar’s unique offset body shape features a 7 piece mahogany/maple neck-through design with reverse headstock and coupled with rosewood fingerboard.

  • SLASH Featuring Myles Kennedy & the Conspirators (Bio) “I Think It's Time to Set This World on Fire/I Think It's Time
SLASH featuring Myles Kennedy & the Conspirators (Bio) “I think it’s time to set this world on fire/I think it’s time to push it to the edge/I’m so f---in’ bored so trip the wire/It may never be this good again” --From the opening power chords of the single and title track of WORLD ON FIRE WORLD ON FIRE is the new album from SLASH featuring Myles Kennedy & the Conspirators, and it comes on full throttle and in- your-face, a hunk of burning rock „n‟ roll that takes no prisoners. Intensifying the band‟s sound and vision, it marks the follow-up to their succesful and acclaimed 2012 debut, Apocalyptic Love, also released on SLASH‟s own indie Dik Hayd International label distributed through Caroline. “We‟ve been playing together for awhile and I think it‟s gotten to the point where everybody‟s comfortable in our own skins,” says Rock and Roll Hall of Fame guitarist SLASH, who has amassed album sales of over 100 million copies, with seven GRAMMY nominations, a GRAMMY award and countless accolades. “It turned out to be a very easy process. We definitely had chemistry from the very first time we entered a room together. It was instantaneous magic.” WORLD ON FIRE represents that chemistry, as SLASH, vocalist MYLES KENNEDY, bassist TODD KERNS and drummer BRENT FITZ blaze through 17 songs that run the gamut of topics, some derived from tour bus conversations between the singer and guitarist. These range from the pointed sexual politics of “Battleground,” “Dirty Girl” and “Stone Blind,” the anti-war sentiments of “Dissident” and the coming-of-age saga “Bent to Fly,” to such charged issues as elephant poaching (“Beneath the Savage Sun”), child abuse in the Catholic Church (“The Unholy”), addiction (“Wicked Stone”) and the perils faced by females of a certain age in show business (“Withered Delilah”).

Slash's solos shine at sold-out show | Music | Entertainment | Toronto Sun 12-03-28 11:19 AM Slash's solos shine at sold-out show JASON MACNEIL, SPECIAL TO QMI AGENCY FIRST POSTED: SATURDAY, MARCH 24, 2012 03:07 AM EDT | UPDATED: SATURDAY, MARCH 24, 2012 03:36 AM EDT Slash in a February file photo. (Ethan Miller/AFP) The only axe Slash had to grind Friday night was his guitar, not dealing with any speculation about Axl. A guest speaker at this year's Canadian Music Week – and answering questions about whether Guns N' Roses would perform at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's induction ceremony repeatedly during press interviews – Slash finally let loose on stage before a sold-out crowd at Toronto's Phoenix Concert Theatre who were in paradise. The top-hat sporting guitarist, along with his backing group the Conspirators (including acclaimed singer Myles Kennedy and Canadian Todd Kerns) tore through a rich back catalogue as well as a lone tune from his forthcoming studio album Apocalyptic Love into early Saturday morning.
