Like Jeff Beck before him, Slash is a superstar guitarist who can’t sing a lick -- a situation that poses a considerable problem when it comes time to record a solo album, which apparently is whenever his band collapses under the preening ego of a lead singer. When combing through the wreckage of GNR he decided to form a band whose singer almost seemed like an afterthought, but he took a different route after the meltdown of Velvet Revolver, choosing to follow Santana’s Supernatural blueprint, hauling in a different singer for each track. Of course, Supernatural was designed with the intention of having Santana cross over to a new audience, but Slash, with the exception of Fergie howling “Beautiful Dangerous,” was made with his old fans in mind, bringing in gnarled old rockers like Ozzy, Lemmy, and Iggy to carry the brunt of the work, slipping in a few new faces -- like Andrew Stockdale of Wolfmother, Rocco DeLuca (the first signing to Kiefer Sutherland’s label), and Myles Kennedy, chosen to front Slash’s supporting tour for the record -- along the way. It’s a comfortable and familiar fit that poses only one significant problem: nobody bothered to write any songs; they’re just playing for the sake of playing. Ironically, the exceptions to the rule are Fergie, who winds up pushing Slash in an interesting hooky direction, and the instrumental jam between the guitarist, his GNR/Velvet bandmate Duff McKagan, and Dave Grohl, a track that has more forward movement and momentum than the rest of the record combined, suggesting that perhaps Slash should follow Beck’s lead and cut an all-instrumental record instead of biding his time creating cozy sleaze with old friends. Slash hasn’t always been a workaholic, but since the end of Velvet Revolver in 2008, he has been working on projects and tours at a steady pace, both solo and with Guns N' Roses. Even if he would like to present it as a band’s album (The Conspirators), it’d be hard to miss his name written in bold on the album cover. He is still the main focus of this fourth solo album (the third with the Conspirators), despite the merits of singer-guitarist Myles Kennedy and the less experienced Todd Kerns (bass) and Brent Fitz (drums, piano). After the delightful double live album, Live at the Roxy 25.09.14 , we could have expected him to move on to something else (if not to reconnect with the ambition, and the many guests, of the Slash album), but the guitarist preferred to remain strictly in the grain of a classic rock band that doesn’t integrate styles outside its comfort zone. But now that he has found a certain balance in his life by reconciling with Axl Rose, does he really need to overcomplicate things? His playing here is irreproachable, especially since producer Michael Baskette gave him a wonderful sound using digital software – a first for Slash, a great defender of analog. He has found an ideal partner in Kennedy who perfectly complements his compositions which are always in good taste in a serene and positive atmosphere. Kennedy was able to express himself completely independently on his solo album, Year of the Tiger . A guest speaker at this year's Canadian Music Week – and answering questions about whether Guns N' Roses would perform at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's induction ceremony repeatedly during press interviews – Slash finally let loose on stage before a sold-out crowd at Toronto's Phoenix Concert Theatre who were in paradise. The top-hat sporting guitarist, along with his backing group the Conspirators (including acclaimed singer Myles Kennedy and Canadian Todd Kerns) tore through a rich back catalogue as well as a lone tune from his forthcoming studio album Apocalyptic Love into early Saturday morning. The five-piece group opened the lengthy set with the mid-tempo rocker Ghost as Slash – wearing shades and a black skull and crossbones t-shirt, let his playing do most of the talking on the small club stage. From there the hard-driving, foot-stomping Mean Bone energized the band that admittedly hadn't played together for some time. Heck guitarist Frank Sidoris was making his debut in the band! Playing without much rest between songs, Slash and company ploughed through Velvet Revolver’s Sucker Train Blues which garnered a large response from the tightly packed throng.
