He is considered one of the most important figures in Urdu literature, with literary work in both the Urdu and Persian languages. Iqbal is admired as a prominent classical poet by Pakistani, Indian and other international scholars of literature. Although most well known as a poet, he has also been acclaimed as a modern Muslim philosopher. His first poetry book, Asrar-e-Khudi, appeared in the Persian language in 1915, and other books of poetry include Rumuz-i-Bekhudi, Payam-i-Mashriq and Zabur-i-Ajam. Some of his most well known Urdu works are Bang-i-Dara, Bal-i-Jibril and Zarb-i Kalim. Along with his Urdu and Persian poetry, his various Urdu and English lectures and letters have been very influential in cultural, social, religious and political disputes over the years. In 1922, he was knighted by King George V, giving him the title "Sir". During his years of studying law and philosophy in England, Iqbal became a member of the London branch of the All India Muslim League. Later, in one of his most famous speeches, Iqbal pushed for the creation of a Muslim state in Northwest India. This took place in his presidential speech in the league's December 1930 was very close to Quid-i-Azam Mohammad Ali Jinnah.

According to the Sydney Morning Herald, the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) in Pakistan arrests an average of six people a day in the Islamabad area for document fraud (The Sydney Morning Herald 13 July 2010). An assistant director of the FIA stated that tens of thousands of people have some sort of involvement in this industry (ibid.). According to a an article published on 12 November 2009 in another Lahore newspaper, The Nation, the current British Home Office Minister responsible for Immigration stated that numerous applications for British visas presented by Pakistanis are accompanied by false documents. The Consul General of the United States in Pakistan stated that in July 2010, nearly 98% of applications for American visas made by Pakistanis were refused because they were accompanied by false documents (Dawn 21 July 2010).     Media in Pakistan: An Overview Dr. Sachin Batra* Soon after the independence media in Pakistan has been under strict government control. Pakistan has been ruled by the Military for a long time. The regimes hammered the press through various ordinances, advertisement and broadcasting policies for decades. In spite of repeated assurances by the ruling elite of Pakistan for advocating freedom of media, most of the time media been under severe restrictions in some form or the other. According to various estimates many journalists in Pakistan have been killed. The threat against the fourth pillar was quoted by the Reporters Sans Frontiers. Their Annual Worldwide Press Indexing (2007), listed Pakistan on 152 rank out of 167. The International Federation of Journalist also declared Pakistan as the most dangerous place for media workers (2010). According to the Committee to Protect Journalist (CPJ) 1,179 journalists have been killed in Pakistan since 1992 till 2011. Another report of UNESCO (2012) had declared Pakistan as the second 1.     The War of Images: Mohammed Ali Jinnah and Editorial Cartoons in the Indian Nationalist Press, 1947 Sukeshi Kamra The anti-colonial nationalist movement in India was signifi cantly con- stituted by propagandizing popular art and literature at the same time as it established new and popular modes of expression. Literature pro- scribed by the government and newspaper culture of the decades leading to Independence (1920–1947) attest to the above as, does the fact that the editorial policy of newspapers it supported absorbed the colonial government.1 The shift in the movement from mass protest to constitu- tional negotiations, that occurred around 1945, also saw an intriguing shift in the place of the press. From being central because of its propa- gandizing power, it became, seemingly, about as marginal as the people themselves, returned to a press’s usual role as ‘disseminator’ of informa- tion. It could be argued, however, that the press occupied an even more critical place between 1945 and 1947 for in these years it was the only public forum that continued to legitimize the participation of a people aggressively lobbied previously by leaders keen fi rst to organize and then maintain the momentum of the anti-colonial movement.2 In the culmi- nating year, 1947, editorial pages are given over to polemical debate and political problem solving—should there be one or two nations? Where should the boundaries be located and in accordance with what princi- ples?—that parallel similar debates occurring behind closed doors at the political centre. While letters to the editor, articles, aphorisms, gossip columns are lively indeed, and obsessively political, editorial cartoons surpass these forums of opinion in their wrestling with a vexed politi- cal process by recoursing to heavily infl ammatory visual rhetoric.3 It is, of course, in the nature of editorial cartoons to be polemical and in- fl ammatory.
