The Postwar Ventures by John Steinbeck, Irwin Shaw, and Robert Capa This paper is an attempt to analze literary ventures by John Steinbeck, Irwin Shaw and Robert Capa in which text and pictures make their own commentary. A Russian Journal (1948) is an unusual record of “the great other side of Russia,” wherein Steinbeck and Capa struggle to present the Soviet Union deprived of its ideological context. The authors make a sweeping journey through the USSR, portraying the landscapes and ways of life of ordinary Russians who were emerging from the rubble of WWII with the hope of peace‑ ful coexistence of capitalism and communism in the atomic decade. The challenging task of demarcating culture with politics produced an intriguing travel narrative in which the power of observation is inherent in Steinbeck’s insights into Russia’s cultural landscapes and its memories of war, not in its Cold War state of mind. Similarly, Shaw and Capa take up a delicate task, reporting on the labyrinths of war in a newly developing state in the Middle East. Report on Israel (1950) is a powerful depiction of several wars at a crossroads where verbal assessment and photographic artistry often compete with one another. The spirit behind A Russian Journal and Report on Israel is a reminder of the postwar era’s insta‑ bility and the human dimension of political changes.

    In doing research for this book, it became quickly apparent that comparing Steinbeck’s travels and associations with government TIMELINE CITIZEN SPY STEINBECK: documentation might help me decipher Steinbeck’s dual life. I did not know what tidbits would be pertinent as I came across events in John’s life, so I compiled as detailed a timeline as possible. The majority of entries have a corresponding reference to aid in returning to material that seemed promising. Unreferenced events are sourced via major biographies and are generally accepted as accurate. The main source for referenced events in this timeline isSteinbeck: A Life in Letters. One has to assume that Steinbeck’s own record is the most accurate available. Where an exact date for an event is in question, I have attempted to note the estimation and why the estimation was made. I’ve also taken the liberty of including major world events into this timeline to place Steinbeck’s life in proper historical context. For convenience’s sake, references and citations for the timeline have been included at the end of the section. 1902 February 27: John Ernst Steinbeck was born in Salinas, California. He was the third of four children and the only son of John Ernst II and Olive Hamilton Steinbeck. 1915–19 Steinbeck attends Salinas High School. 1919 Summer: Steinbeck works at the Post Ranch and tracks the Big Sur Bear.1 1919–25: Attends classes at Stanford University, leaving without a degree. During these years, Steinbeck drops out for several months, and is employed intermittently as a sales clerk, farm laborer, ranch hand, and factory worker.

The Human Experience in Steinbeck FashionBy C. BradleyI read A Russian Journal upon returning home from a two-month stint of teaching in Moscow and was excited to dive into another Steinbeck. Not surprisingly, Steinbeck offers a truthful and compassionate portrayal of the human experience through eyes which seem to dissolve cultural barriers. Respectfully intruding into the lives of normal people during post World War II Soviet Union, Steinbeck, accompanied by Robert Capa, documents the thoughts, work ethics, and questions of those who the rest of 1940s America failed to understand. Forging ahead behind the iron curtain, Steinbeck retells tales of normal, family-oriented, hard-working people found in the midst of his travels through the countryside who in many ways were no different than the Americans who feared and often disdained them.Most remarkably to me, Steinbeck tells of a Moscow that is relatively unchanged today. Incredibly, this slice of Russian culture has remained the same in many ways though it has experienced such a turbulent century. I would recommend A Russian Journal to anyone planning on visiting Russia soon (because it is still relevant) and also to anyone who enjoys Steinbeck.

Whenever one of my teachers assigned a novel, I would skim through it as fast as I could, or have a half-hour review session with someone who did the assignment properly. But more often than not, I would ignore the assignment completely. When the assignment was to read a novel written by John Steinbeck, I would start to go through my usual process of try­ ing to get the major ideas by reading one word from each sentence and work my way up to one sentence from each paragraph, However, the more sentences I read, the more I wanted to read, and ultimately I found myself reading the entire novel, word by word. My case is by no means rare. I have been teaching literature in some capacity for two and a half years. Often I have had students as hostile to the idea of reading an entire novel as I once was.
