Short Sands Beach, York, Maine
When you think of Maine, you might envision Bar Harbor, Ogunquit and Kennebunkport. And while all of them offer lovely sand and surf, Short Sands Beach wins our vote. Small in size, it’s perfect for families with young children, who enjoy calm, clean water, lifeguards and restrooms, along with a playground and basketball court. Downtown York Beach is literally right next to Short Sands Beach, too, providing easy access to shops, restaurants, hotels, and attractions, which include York’s Wild Kingdom Zoo and Fun Park. Pack a picnic lunch and head to Nubble Light (Cape Neddick Lighthouse) while you’re in the area.
Long Sands Beach, York, Maine
The second ranked New England beach, as voted on by our viewers, is York Beach in York, Maine. York Beach is actually more like two beaches, separated by Cape Neddick and a gorgeous lighthouse known as Nubble Light. Short Sands Beach is a smaller beach located adjacent to an historic and very quaint downtown area. “We like to come to this beach because we have a family and this is the best family beach we know of,” says Joanie, who has been coming to York for years. “They start coming here when they’re a kid, they come back here when they’re young adults with children, and they come here again when they’re grandparents and see their grandchildren playing on the same beaches that they did when they were little,” says Ryan Coite, from the York Parks Dept. Long Sands Beach is nearly a mile-and-a-half long, a much larger area for beach-goers to enjoy the sand and surf. “Whether it’s your first time or your 20th, come to York and enjoy your summer vacation,” says Coite. Abundant amenities at the York beaches, plenty of restrooms, showers, food options, lifeguards, you name it, York’s got it!

York ~ Mount Agamenticus Mount Agamenticus is set amidst a 13,000 acre expanse of intact forest in southern Maine and is one of the larg- est remaining unfragmented forests in coastal New England. The region is noted for its rich natural resources and outdoor recreational opportunities. Year round activities include picnicking/sightseeing, birding, hiking, and mountain biking. A self guided StoryWalkTM can be picked up at the base and the pages can be followed along the Ring and Witch-hazel trails to the summit. Picnic tables, seasonal portable toi- lets, and decks offering spectacular views of distant mountains, inland ponds and the ocean are located at the summit. The Mount Agamenticus Learning Lodge, a converted summit ski lodge, is open to the general public on weekends from 11am-3pm from Memorial Day Weekend through Columbus Day Week- end. Inside you will find a variety of educational activities and displays for all ages. The area is open year round during daylight hours. Dona- tion tubes area available at the base trail head and by the summit kiosk. Larger groups are asked to register in ad- vance. Vaughan Woods Memorial State Park is a 250-acre forested tract along the scenic Salmon Falls River. The park includes picnic facilities and hiking trails through old-

Eliot ~ Eliot Boat Basin Located on the Piscataqua River, the Boat Basin features a public boat launch, sometimes referred to as “Dead Duck Landing” by locals, as well as a pavilion (available for rental) and park area. Kittery ~ Fort Foster Fort Foster was originally built in the early 1900’s and was an active fortress manned during World War II. It is now owned and operated by the town of Kittery as a public recreation, picnic and beach facility. Fort Foster offers views of Whaleback Light, Portsmouth Harbor Light and Fort Constitution; explore the extensive trail system and old military fortifications. Leashed dogs are allowed, just make sure to obey the signs. Fort Foster is located on Pocahontas Road on Gerrish Island in Kittery Point. Open weekends May - September, seven days a week between Memorial Day and Labor Day. A gate fee is charged. Call the Fort Foster Gate House (open seasonally) at (207) 439-2182.
Kittery ~ Fort McClary Explore Fort McClary State Park located on Route 103 in Kittery, Maine. Fort McClary was named for New Hampshire native Major Andrew McClary who died at the Revolutionary War's Battle of Bunker Hill. Fort McClary stands today as one of the state's most important historic forts that dramatically preserves evidence of military history and changes in military architecture and technology. The buildings presently on the site represent several different periods of construction as the fort was upgraded and modified to meet the area's defensive needs. The site was manned during five wars: The Revolutionary War, War of 1812, Civil War, Spanish-American War, and World War I. Like most other Maine forts, it saw little conflict. The fort provides great photo opportunities of Portsmouth Harbor Light and the old Portsmouth Naval Prison. A gate fee is charged. Park Season: (207) 439-2845. Off Season: (207) 490-4079.

Cape Neddick Light / Nubble Light 1879 Officially the Cape Neddick Light Station, it was built in 1879 for $15,000 on a nub of land-- -thus the Nubble. It was first lighted on July 1, 1879. The current beacon is a 1000 watt bulb behind red plaxiglass. It flashes 3 seconds on and three seconds off. It is visible for 13 miles. The automated foghorn is activated by the atmosphere and blasts every 10 seconds. The tower is 41 feet high and 88 feet above sea level. It is built of brick that has been covered by metal sheathing. Thirty-three circular iron steps go up to the lantern room. The first innkeeper was Nathanial Otterson, and the last was Russell Ahlgren. The light was automated in 1987. Living quarters consisted of 3 bedrooms, kitchen, dining, living, and pantry. The smaller red house was once used for fuel and the little white house was a workshop. The light is maintained by the Coast Guard, but the Town of York owns the property and buildings. It is maintained by the York Parks and Recreation Committee. FMI: (207) 363-1040. There is no public access allowed on the island. Photo by Dennis Kee The Sohier Park, which is located on the mainland, has ample parking for visitors as well as benches and rest room facilities. Animals must be leashed. Sohier Park is located off Nubble Road in York Beach. A gift shop full of lighthouse memorabilia is manned by volunteers from May through October. Proceeds from the sale of goods there go toward the maintanance of the park and lighthouse. FMI: gift shop (207) 363-3569. This lighthouse is one of the most photographed and painted in the world. Thousands of people visit it annually, and twice a year the lighthouse is outlined in Christmas lights and lit at night in special celebrations. Christmas in July is part of the York Days celebration held during the last week in July and the first week of August. The Lighting of the Nubble celebration is held on the Saturday after Thanksgiving from 5pm to 7pm. Hot cocoa and homemade cookies are provided free of charge during the Christmas carols. Then Santa arrives via fire truck to flick the switch, turning the lights on. The lights stay on at night until January 1st, weather permitting.

Boon Island Light 1811/1855
133' gray granite conical tower, located offshore nine miles east of York Beach.
After a particularly grizzly episode of cannibalism on this desolate rock pile, locals left food and clothing here for use of any shipwreck victim; hence the somewhat ironic name, "Boon." This tiny island, about nine miles off the coast of York, has been continually submerged by storms and the light has been rebuilt several times. Today its brick cylinder rises 137 feet, making it Maine's tallest lighthouse. It is not open to the public but can be seen from Sohier Park, off Nubble Road, in York Beach and as part of local lighthouse cruises. This light guards the entrance to Portsmouth Harbor, and looks as its name suggests: like a lighthouse perched atop the back of a whale, or some other sea creature. It is closed to the public but can be seen from Fort Foster in Kittery and from the water. Whaleback Light was built in 1831.

THE YORKS . . . yorkmaine.org Composed of what were once four smaller communities, the towns of York Village, York Harbor, York Beach and Cape Neddick formed under one government to create this beautiful and diverse town. It is famous for its long sandy beaches, and safe, family- friendly beach-town atmosphere. As each year passes, the area becomes more of a destination for weddings, family reunions, or just a place to get away. Nubble Lighthouse is one of the most photographed lighthouses in the world and is a popular spot for residents and visitors alike. It has a small park with benches that make it a peaceful place to rest and reflect. The Museums of Old York maintain numerous historic buildings including Jefferds’ Tavern, the John Hancock Wharf, the Old Goal (America’s oldest jail), the Emerson Wilcox house. This museum is located in the heart of York Village and offers lectures and special events throughout the year. It is open for tours in the summertime. Lobstering, fishing, boat building and farming were the foundations of the economy until the late 1800s when the southern Maine coast began to attract summer visitors in large numbers. A family favorite is a visit to our zoo & amusement park. The proximity of the Yorks to the cultural centers of Boston and New York City continue to make it one of the most sought-after places to live in southern Maine. Once a summer-season-only resort area, York has become a year-round vacation destination.

KITTERY . . . kitteryme.gov Our gateway town, the oldest incorporated town in Maine, guards the mouth of the Piscataqua River and is the halfway mark on Interstate 95 between Boston MA and Portland ME. As you take a scenic drive along U.S. Route 103 to Kittery Point, you will pass the gates of of the 200 year old Portsmouth Naval Shipyard; the historic Lady Pepperrell House; Fort McClary, built in 1690, now a state park; and Fort Foster located at the end of Pocahontas Road, which was once a fortress manned during World War II, is now a public recreation and beach facility. Along with the beautiful homes and gardens, there are remnants of the fishing, shipbuilding, and other marine-related industries that were once the center of Kittery’s economy.
Today downtown Kittery, sometimes known as Kittery Foreside, has become a gathering place for artists, specialty shops, and fine dining. The Kittery Outlets, located along the Route One corridor, provide a variety of shopping experiences.

ELIOT . . .eliotmaine.org Once a part of Kittery known as the Upper Parish, the town separated from Kittery in 1810. The 747-ton Elizabeth Hamilton, and the clipper ship, The Nightingale, were launched from Eliot’s shores, as were numerous smaller craft. Eliot was the site of the first Quaker Meeting House in 1776, and it is also the international home of the Baha’i faith. Primarily a farming community in its earlier years, Eliot was also known for its brick-making industry. The town meanders along the shores of the Piscataqua River opposite the cities of Portsmouth and Dover, NH. Take River Road for scenic views of the Piscataqua River and across to Great Bay. Also on the southern end of U.S. Route 103 Main St., there is an active public boat launch along with a family picnic area and pavilion.
SOUTH BERWICK . . . southberwickmaine.org Home of the oldest power mill in America, this community has had a diverse economy that included textile and shoe manufacturing, farming, timber and fishing. During its heyday, a boat called a gundalow was built to haul goods from the smaller inland rivers to the faster-moving Piscataqua River. Historic homes including the Sarah Orne Jewett House and the Old Hamilton House are open to visitors in the summer as is the Counting House, home of the Old Berwick Historical Society. Vaughan Woods State Park, the Salmon Falls River and Mt. Agamenticus are all popular recreation areas for hiking, biking and picnicking. The quaint downtown has a variety of year round fine dining and delightful shops. Outdoor concerts on the town hall lawn are a common summer occurrence. South Berwick and Eliot share a public school district, but South Berwick is also home to Berwick Academy, a highly respected college preparatory day school. US Route 236 is the main artery connecting Kittery, Eliot and Old Hamilton House South Berwick.
