Map 2, D2-E2: This is a wonderful free-stone river with plenty of access, starting in Lebanon, along the aptly named Little River Road. Like many rivers and ponds, the Little River receives 100s of trout stocked by Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife hatcheries in May. It has prolific hatches of caddis, stoneflies and Mayflies.

Saco River Location: Fryeburg to Biddeford Species: Brown trout, Brook trout and smallmouth bass in the fast water. Large- mouth bass, pickerel, panfish and Northern pike in the slower water. Species of note: smolt and adult Atlantic salmon (see Ossipee River for information about handling). Map 4, A1-E5; Map 2, A5; Map 3, A1-C3: The Saco starts in the New Hampshire White Mountains and flows into the Atlantic Ocean between Camp Ellis and Hills Beach. Access is very good along main and secondary roads. Dams offer impounded waters for watercraft access to the warm water fish species. There are too many places along this river to write about here, but one deserves special mention. Union Falls Dam (known locally as Skelton Dam) in Dayton, has plenty of public parking on the left side of the road that continues directly to the dam. It’s a short hike from the parking lot through the farm fields, and to the fast water below the dam. Be careful when wading, as water levels can change rapidly.
