From the point of view of his future reception, this mobility has been his undoing, since, as I have commented elsewhere,1 no national, regional or local tradition has been able to claim him entirely as its own and thereby acquire a strong rationale to do justice to his considerable musical merits via monumental editions or commemorative writings.
