2 AND YOU ! It has been a busy year at the Children’s Hospital!

After settling in following the move to the Glen site, we were able to turn our focus to renewing our strategic plan. Because of generous donors like you, we are well-equipped to continue and even expand our mandate to provide highly-specialized care to a growing number of children with very complex health challenges, both in the hospital and the communities in which they live.

Our important work depends on your support. The tremendous involvement of donors and partners in the business, cultural and sports communities means that we are able to make advances in research, teaching and care delivery that would be otherwise unthinkable.

During the 2016-2017 fiscal year, generous donors like you purchased equipment that will transform the lives of children: equipment like a heart- lung machine for cardiac surgery, a trilogy ventilator, and a heating and cooling unit for the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. Your support also helped to create a fully equipped procedure room, with its own dedicated team, so that children can undergo minimally-invasive procedures in the safest environment possible. You helped provide family-based treatment for adolescents with eating disorders, a first in , and you invested in the future by supporting cutting-edge research in leukodystrophy, pediatric brain tumours, kidney transplants and fertility in young cancer patients.

Every sick child just wants a chance to grow up with family and friends like every other kid, to the best of his or her ability. On behalf of our young patients, their families and our staff, thank you for giving us the tools to make that happen.

Chantal Souligny Interim Administrative Director Montreal Children’s Hospital of the MUHC

3 “People might think that I’m doing so much for the kids but the truth is that they do much more for me.” - P.K. Subban

4 On a sunny Saturday afternoon in June, just after the playoffs, P.K. Subban made a surprise visit to the Montreal Children’s Hospital. No media, no cameras, just P.K. and the kids.

“I couldn’t wait to see the kids again,” he explains. “I missed them. Each and every time we have a chance to meet, I am inspired by their stories, courage and perseverance.”

Since announcing his historic $10 million commitment in the fall of 2015, it would be difficult to find an area of the Hospital that P.K. hasn’t helped. From kids spending long days in bed who get premium TV packages and WiFi free of charge to support services for parents of seriously ill children in neonatal and pediatric intensive care, P.K.’s Helping Hand provides housing for out-of-town families, parking, meal vouchers, gift cards for groceries, and other basic expenses, as well as extraordinary financial aid for families facing serious hardships. Because of him, families also receive help to pay for expensive medical necessities not covered by the government: costly medication, home equipment and supplies for kids with respiratory problems, bone-anchored hearing aids, mandibles for craniofacial patients, family-based treatment for eating disorders, books for underprivileged families, and educational and play materials for occupational therapy, autism and other areas.

By March 31, 2017, P.K.’s Helping Hand contributed $2 million to the Hospital and assists over 9,000 patients a year. And he has no intention of slowing down.

“People might think that I’m doing so much for the kids but the truth is that they do much more for me,” he says. “I will never stop fundraising or raising awareness for them… and I’ll be back for many more surprise visits!”

5 6 Today, because of generous donors like you, we stand on the brink of discoveries that will revolutionize health care.

More breakthroughs will be made in the next ten years than have been made in the last 100. Your gifts have uniquely placed the Montreal Children’s Hospital in a position to harness the unlimited potential of this new era and transform the lives of sick children in ways that were previously unimaginable.

Your support is crucial. Donations increased this year to $22 million and coupled with our investment revenue of almost $11 million, you helped make 2016-2017 the Foundation’s most successful year ever. We greatly appreciate our generous community of corporate and individual donors, partner foundations, and everyone who organized and attended more than 200 events in support of the Hospital.

As we look ahead to a promising future, the Foundation is preparing to meet the growing demands of supporting one of the country’s leading pediatric hospitals. Our satellite office near the entrance to the Children’s has brought us closer to our patients, their families and the donors who so generously support them. We are gearing up for a new major fundraising campaign that will focus on recruiting and retaining the Hospital’s most precious resource, its human capital. Our world-class hospital-based research facility provides a unique and perfect marriage between the medical challenges faced by the patients and the basic fundamental science our association with McGill provides. The result is the innovation required to dramatically change outcomes for sick children.

Looking back on this stellar year, we thank you for putting children and families first, for your continued commitment to the Children’s, and for believing that we can all play an important role in transforming the lives of the young people we treat.

7 WHERE DONATIONS COME FROM… Donations to the Montreal Children’s Hospital Foundation come from four main sources:

MAJOR GIFTS Major gift donors include individuals, foundations and corporations who all share a common goal to transform healthcare by funding special projects, research or new equipment. These important partners help to keep the Children’s at the forefront of pediatric care.

ANNUAL SUPPORT The Foundation’s direct mailing campaigns allow the Foundation to communicate directly with donors on a regular basis. The annual Caring for Kids Radiothon, and appeals to grateful parents, grandparents, our Leadership Circle, corporate leaders, and the community at large, generate funds to help meet the Hospital’s most urgent needs, supporting care and treatment when and where it is needed most.

SPECIAL EVENTS The Special Events Department works with organizations and individuals who show their tremendous support for the Hospital by holding community events. From amateur sports tournaments to elegant fashion shows, grassroots fundraisers organize more than 200 events each year to benefit the Hospital’s young patients. Flagship events, including the Ball for the Children’s, Pedal for Kids, Splash and Dash and the Golf Tournament, and the activities of our Young Leaders Circle, contribute significantly to supporting care, teaching and research.

LEGACY GIVING Legacy giving provides donors with an opportunity to make a long-term commitment to the Children’s. These gifts can take the form of a tribute in the name of a loved one, an endowment, a bequest, a gift annuity or a life insurance policy. Funds raised through the Planned Giving Department are essential to helping the Hospital meet its urgent needs and its long term goals. Legacy donors recognize the importance of creating a lasting commitment for sick children today and for generations to come.

8 ...WHERE DONATIONS GO Donations to the Montreal Children’s Hospital Foundation are distributed to the Hospital and used to support the following:

CARE A world-renowned leader providing a broad spectrum of highly specialized care to newborns, children, and adolescents, the Montreal Children’s Hospital is a place where families can be confident they are in the best of hands. Through funding of innovative programs and equipment in numerous departments, your donations help our multidisciplinary teams of doctors, nurses and other healthcare professionals deliver child and family-centered care that is second to none.

TEACHING The Montreal Children’s Hospital is the pediatric teaching hospital of the Faculty of Medicine at McGill University, one of North America’s top universities. Young healthcare professionals have the opportunity to learn from the best and brightest in their respective fields and many choose to continue their careers with the Hospital. For Dr. Thérèse Perreault, Director of Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, the contribution of Dr. Gabriel Altit and others is invaluable. Dr. Altit is an example of the next generation of specialists and researchers who, as Fellows, receive an outstanding education at the Children’s from some of the best medical minds in North America.

RESEARCH New discoveries and advancements made through research at the Children’s are constantly transforming the field of pediatrics. The generous support of visionary donors has assured that pediatric care at the Children’s constantly evolves. This year, your gifts have supported advancements in leukodystrophy, pediatric brain tumours, kidney transplants, and fertility in young cancer patients. Funding research is crucial for it will allow investigators like Dr. John Mitchell to provide new hope for children like Félix-Antoine, who suffers from Hunter Syndrome, a fatal disease for which there is currently no cure.

9 CARE: AN INNOVATIVE ROOM, FOR MORE HUMANE CARE

Imagine you are Stefano, a small child in a hospital full of strangers, waiting for a vital procedure like a lumbar puncture or an intubation, requiring different levels of sedation. Imagine getting that possibly painful procedure in a cramped corner of a ward or lost among bewildering medical machines in the pediatric ICU or an operating room. Until quite recently, patients at the Children’s received a whole range of non-surgical and other non-invasive treatments in such places all over the Hospital. But thanks to the determination of a working group of health professionals – nurses, doctors, technicians and others – and the generosity DR. PIERRE FISET of donors, these procedures are now much easier on everyone: a plan was Head, Department of devised for a new, dedicated hospital space called a Procedural Sedation Pediatric Anesthesia Service, otherwise known as a “procedure room”. Such a room would allow nurses, therapists and different specialized physicians to carry out procedures that would become less painful for patients, less anxiety-ridden for their parents and more efficient for all who are concerned with making better use of beds and other valuable hospital resources. It was an idea whose time had come for the new Hospital at the Glen site that is dedicated to providing ever-better, leading-edge, holistic and humane health care. But even the best ideas rarely get off the paper they’re written on if they don’t get broad, substantial support. The procedure room needed some serious funding: moving from the drawing board to operation for the first five years would require $1,250,000. The funding request was formally made in late 2015 and was granted just a few months later. The procedure room is now reality: “This room was created with the donations of generous people through the Montreal Children’s Hospital Foundation,” says Doctor Pierre Fiset, Head of the Department of Pediatric Anesthesia of the Children’s. “Donors were instrumental in getting the right equipment into that procedure room and in providing funding for the personnel that are needed. Without those donors and the Foundation they support, the procedure room just wouldn’t exist.”

10 ‘‘We have to keep donating. We have to keep fundraising. These doctors and nurses have the hardest job on the planet.’’

– Vito, father of Stefano, 7

11 TEACHING: BRINGING KNOWLEDGE HOME

The Children’s is a teaching hospital, and as such, is bound to offer its patients the very best and most advanced care possible so that it may teach the newest leading- edge techniques to the next generations of healthcare professionals. Teaching and learning happen concurrently and continuously at McGill and the Children’s. Dr. Gabriel Altit’s own experience is a prime example. After his pediatric and neonatology training, Dr. Altit, a McGill medical alumnus, completed a fellowship at the Children’s in 2015, working in a combined program involving echocardiography, neonatology and pulmonary medicine. From the Children’s, Dr. Altit set out for California. “I wanted to acquire new research tools and did a post-doctoral fellowship at Stanford University.” He’s DR. GABRIEL ALTIT now coming back to Montreal to apply what he has learned about newborn cardiovascular function. He’ll be starting at the Children’s as an attending Neonatologist physician in neonatology. “It was always my plan to come back to Montreal and the Children’s. This hospital is like my family. I’m coming home.” Dr. Altit is thrilled to pursue his study of the immediate and long-term effects of various neonatal conditions on cardiac performance. “For that, I’m putting together a research program, working with the neonatology, respirology and cardiology groups to study the cardiovascular impact of prematurity as newborns grow and age. I’ll also be involved in the education and research of fellows, residents and medical students at McGill.” After spending so many years as a student, Dr. Altit is ready to share what he has learned: “Medicine is constantly evolving and practitioners, I think, have a duty to create and transmit knowledge because there’s so much that we still don’t understand.” Dr. Thérèse Perreault, Director of the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), heartily agrees and sees fellowships as a very smart investment: “The Children’s commitment to providing the best possible pediatric care depends heavily on keeping up the highest standards in our fellowship programs. Our generous donors are essential partners in these programs and are vital to their success.”

12 “The Montreal Children’s commitment to providing the best possible pediatric care depends heavily on keeping up the highest standards in our fellowship programs.”

– Dr. Thérèse Perreault, Director of the NICU 13 RESEARCH: THE RELENTLESS SEARCH FOR CURES

Félix-Antoine could be almost any active preschooler. But his parents now know that their little boy may not live beyond adolescence. Félix-Antoine has been diagnosed with Hunter Syndrome. It’s a rare, degenerative disease that prevents the body from eliminating certain cellular waste. The waste slowly accumulates throughout the body and progressively causes damage to practically every organ system, including the eyes, ears, lungs, heart, bones and, in about two-thirds of patients with Hunter Syndrome, the brain. Félix-Antoine’s parents, Édith and Jean-François, are waiting to learn DR. JOHN if their child will be among those who suffer progressive neurological damage. MITCHELL “You look at him and you think he looks quite normal,” says Édith. “Now, he is at his best, so we try to enjoy things as they are now.” Jean-François adds: “It’s Director, Division of very sad, but there are no survivors of this disease. None.” Pediatric Endocrinology Yet, there is hope. Medical researchers studying Hunter Syndrome are exploring different avenues to get the body to eliminate its destructive waste. Dr. John Mitchell, a pediatric endocrinologist at the Montreal Children’s Hospital, says real progress is being made with enzyme replacement therapy: “It works very well on peripheral problems involving movement, the liver and cardiac damage.” But while the therapy can slow the disease, Dr. Mitchell says it cannot stop it. “There’s no cure.” The next challenge for researchers in the fight against Hunter Syndrome is to find a way to eliminate cellular waste that may accumulate in the brain. “We need to further our understanding of what happens with this disease so that we can begin to really treat it. To do this, we need research funding.” The truth is plain to Dr. Mitchell: “Every bit of money counts in the search for a cure.” In the meantime, Félix-Antoine’s family carries on: they come to the Children’s every week for the little boy’s enzyme replacement therapy. And they wait. “It’s hard when we start thinking about the future. It sounds clichéd, but it’s true: every moment is important. We find peace in the moment.”

14 “It’s very sad, but there are no survivors of this disease. None.”

“Our granddaughter, Angela, was born with a congenital heart defect called Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome. She successfully underwent open heart surgery at the Children’s 12 days later. Unfortunately, she lived for only 10 weeks. At the time of her death, our family decided to form an endowment fund called Angela’s Big Hearts for Little Kids Fund as a way of thanking all the dedicated people at the Hospital for their help with her fight to live. Through this fund, Angela is helping other children suffering from heart disease to have a better life and so her brief life will continue to benefit others today and into the future.” — Paul McDonald, founder of the Angela’s Big Hearts for Little Kids Fund, grandfather of Angela, seen here on her mother Catherine’s lap.
