Antara tindakan proaktif yang dilaksanakan adalah menerusi pengawalan pintu keluar masuk antarabangsa, pengesanan kes secara aktif (Active Case Detection) dan Pendekatan Tertumpu (Targeted Approach) bagi kumpulan yang berisiko tinggi. Keberhasilan usaha ini juga mempunyai kebergantungan yang tinggi terhadap setiap lapisan masyarakat dengan membudayakan Kebiasaan Baharu bagi memerangi jangkitan berterusan di dalam negara. Kementerian Kesihatan Malaysia memaklumkan pada 15 Mei 2020 kumulatif kes sembuh bertambah kepada 5,439 atau 79.3 peratus daripada keseluruhan kes berbanding 1,304 kes yang masih aktif. Sementara itu, sebanyak 36 kes baharu direkodkan dan menjadikan jumlah jangkitan positif meningkat kepada 6,855 kes. Sebanyak 28 kes daripada catatan baharu tersebut dikesan melibatkan jangkitan dari kalangan bukan warganegara. Kawasan Lembah Klang mendominasi kumulatif kes positif dengan menyumbang sebanyak 47.0 peratus, Zon Selatan (24.2 peratus), Wilayah Malaysia Timur (13.0 peratus), Zon Pantai Timur (8.7 peratus) dan Zon Utara (7.1 peratus). Di peringkat negeri, pertambahan kes harian baharu antaranya adalah menerusi catatan di W.P Kuala Lumpur dengan merekodkan 15 kes disusuli Selangor sebanyak 14 kes, Pahang (5 kes) manakala Melaka dan Negeri Sembilan masing-masing dengan catatan satu (1) kes baharu.

In a statement, the MEOA specifically pointed to the windfall profit levy (WPL) on crude palm oil (CPO), Sabah's 7.5% sales tax on CPO and Sarawa'sk 5% sales tax on sales of CPO and crude palm kernel oil (CPKO). According to the association, these taxes collectively amounted to an estimated RM1.3 billion in 2019 when CPO prices averaged at RM2,079 per tonne. Based on 2019’s production figures and assuming CPO prices are sustained at RM3,200 a tonne, the MEOA expects these taxes to result in proceeds of RM2.8 billion a year. Citing Finance Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz’s comments that the imposition of a windfall profit levy on glove manufacturers would make investors think twice before investing in the country, the association asked whether this policy thinking would be expanded to the palm oil industry when it comes to the WPL.

She is a conservation scientist and environmental anthropologist by training and is interested in various facets of Malaysia’s rural livelihoods and issues of economic development. 1 ISSUE: 2021 No. 65 ISSN 2335-6677 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY § Covid-19 has had an exceptionally harsh impact on the Johor economy due to the combined factors of border closure (and loss of Singaporean visitors), local movement restrictions and economic slowdown, as well as unemployment amongst former Malaysian workers in Singapore. § The combination of these difficulties has resulted in (amongst others) a 70 percent drop in the retail economy, hotel occupancy rates falling to 27 percent and the closure of 14 hotels in Johor. § The bottom 40 percent (B40) were some of the most affected by these Covid-induced consequences, especially as micro-businesses were also not allowed to open during the first Movement Control Order (MCO). Johor’s poverty rate rose from 3.9 percent in 2019 to almost 8 percent in 2020, while hardcore poverty rose to 2.5 percent in 2020 from 0.2 percent in 2019.
