Th e Discovery of Two New Tufted Desertparsleys from Southeastern Oregon: Lomatium ravenii var. paiutense and Lomatium bentonitum Donald H. Mansfi eld Department of Biology, Th e College of Idaho Caldwell, Idaho 83605 nyone who has ever tried to identify a biscuitroot or desertparsley (Lomatium) Aor springparsley (Cymopterus) can ap- preciate how variable these plants can be. As a consequence of my fl oristic study of southeast- ern Oregon, most recently the Owyhee region, I often encounter unusual forms of plants. Sometimes these forms are just minor variations within the range of what might be expected for a given species, and other times the variations seem diff erent enough to warrant a closer look. Further investigation may include more fi eld observations, locating additional populations with the unusual characters, careful measure- ments and comparisons of these characters between closely related species, greenhouse or experimental manipulations, or even phyloge- netic analysis of DNA sequence data. At the small liberal arts college where I teach, some of these aberrant populations that “don’t read the books” make for fun research projects for keen undergraduate students. Th at was the case in the mid-2000s when I suggested to my student, Kim Carlson, that she make some measurements on specimens of three species of Lomatium from southeastern Oregon and southwestern Idaho. Flowers in these “apioids” (Apiaceae, the carrot and parsley family) are small and rather nondescript white, yellow, or sometimes purplish, reddish, or brownish- green. Easily recognized by the characteristic umbel, members of the genera Lomatium Figure 1. Habitat Conservation Assessment for Allium aaseae (Aase's onion) by Michael Mancuso February 1995 SUMMARY Allium aaseae (Aase's onion) is a small, early spring-flowering perennial plant endemic to southwestern Idaho, and has been a priority conservation concern for over 15 years. Its global range is restricted to the lower foothills, from Boise to Emmett, plus two disjunct population near Weiser. It occurs on open, xeric, gentle to steep sandy slopes, and usually associated with depauperate bitterbrush (Purshia tridentata) or bitterbrush/sagebrush (Artemisia tridentata) communities. Aspects are generally southerly, and elevations range from 2700 to 3700 feet, with a few exceptions to 5100 feet. Most, if not all populations are restricted to sandy alluvial soils of the Glenns Ferry Formation. There are 66 known occurrences for Aase's onion, ranging in size from less than one to over 200 acres. Most occurrences support more than 1000 individuals, but range from less than 100, to more than 30,000. A great majority (79%) of known occurrences occur at least partly on private land, with nearly half (48%) restricted to privately owned land. Populations are also known from City of Boise, Ada County, State Department of Lands, and BLM lands. Segments of at least eight populations have been destroyed since originally discovered, and it is believed parts of at least several others were destroyed prior to discovering remnant portions. Across its range, the sandy foothill habitats of Allium aaseae has been subject to four main land uses since white settlement - urban/suburbanization, livestock grazing, sand mining, and various recreational activities. All pose direct or indirect threats to Aase's onion in portions of its range. -

Walnut St. PO Box 25 Boise, Idaho 83707 MICHAEL MANCUSO BETH COLKET 2006 Challenge Cost-Share Project Boise District BLM and Idaho Department of Fish and Game ABSTRACT Malheur prince’s plume (Stanleya confertiflora) is a showy biennial forb in the mustard family (Brassicaceae) endemic to eastern Oregon and adjacent southwestern Idaho. It is a Type 2 Idaho Bureau of Land Management (BLM) special status plant species, and on the Oregon BLM sensitive species plant list as well. In 2005, the Boise District BLM contracted the Idaho Department of Fish and Game’s Idaho Conservation Data Center to establish a monitoring program for the five Malheur prince’s plume occurrences located on Idaho BLM land. The objective of the monitoring program is to collect occurrence scale plant abundance, habitat, and disturbance trend information to assist resource managers in conservation efforts for Malheur prince’s plume. The 2005 results found Malheur prince’s plume abundance to vary greatly between occurrences, and that in a given year, different sites can be characterized by nearly all reproductive plants, all rosette plants, or a mix of the two life stages. Most transects had no or minimal amounts of cattle, wildlife, or off-road vehicle surface disturbance. All transects had one or more introduced annual weed species, but total weed cover was <10%. However, introduced grass species dominated Malheur prince’s plume habitat at one of the Coal Mine Basin plots. -

H. albiflos is a widespread evergreen plant, while H. pumilio is an endangered narrow endemic species with only two known populations remaining. These populations, remnants of the one recently transferred from Wellington to the Stellenbosch University Botanical gardens and another in the Duthie Reserve in Stellenbosch, present with vastly different morphologies. It is therefore vital to understand the phylogenetics and population genetics of H. pumilio as well as to design a method of in vitro propagation to increase the numbers of these plants. This study analysed the phylogenetics of H. pumilio using non-coding nuclear (Internal transcribed spacer), plastid (trnL-trnF intergenic spacer) and mitochondrial (nadi1477) gene regions and the population genetics using inter-simple sequence repeats (ISSR) and start codon targeted (SCoT) polymorphisms. -

Despite a long history of astrobiology research, collections-based taxonomic inventories of the macro-level biodiversity around the station are relatively new. This study serves to add to the initial vascular plant list published for the station in 2016, where 39 species were recorded for MDRS. Here we report 40 new species, two new taxa recorded only to genus and two species re-identified from our 2016 fieldwork, bringing the total number of taxa in the "Martian" flora to 79 species and two taxa recorded to genus.
