The Wallowas and the Blue Mountain complex, which includes the Ochoco, Maury, Aldrich, Strawberry, Greenhorn and Elkhorn ranges, are collectively known as the Blue Mountain Region and extend for more than 200 miles, from the northeastern corner of Oregon and adjacent southeastern Wash• ington to Prineville in central Oregon. -

H. albiflos is a widespread evergreen plant, while H. pumilio is an endangered narrow endemic species with only two known populations remaining. These populations, remnants of the one recently transferred from Wellington to the Stellenbosch University Botanical gardens and another in the Duthie Reserve in Stellenbosch, present with vastly different morphologies. It is therefore vital to understand the phylogenetics and population genetics of H. pumilio as well as to design a method of in vitro propagation to increase the numbers of these plants. This study analysed the phylogenetics of H. pumilio using non-coding nuclear (Internal transcribed spacer), plastid (trnL-trnF intergenic spacer) and mitochondrial (nadi1477) gene regions and the population genetics using inter-simple sequence repeats (ISSR) and start codon targeted (SCoT) polymorphisms. -

Thematic information allows researchers to characterize biological processes of interest at various spatial scales. In and around Ikh Nart Nature Reserve of Mongolia, few large-scale habitat and landscape maps exist. Such maps are needed to support several long-term biological studies. Here we report the results of a maximum likelihood supervised classifi cation of a fi ve-band multispectral composite Landsat 7ETM+ image of the Dalanjargalan Soum section of the reserve and surrounding areas in Dornogobi and Dundgobi Aimags. We classifi ed the image into seven habitat classes: dense rock, low-density shrub, high-density shrub-rock mix, semi-shrub steppe, forb- dominated short grass steppe, tall vegetation, and ephemeral standing water bodies. Overall classifi cation accuracy was 90.5% with a Khat statistic of 88.8%, and a user’s accuracy of >85% per class, suggesting strong agreement between map and ground reference information. As such, the map presents a detailed distribution of habitats that may be suitable for a variety of research applications including the analysis of wildlife ranging behavior and the identifi cation of priority areas for conservation. -

Bot. 24 (2) 105-113. Tehran. Pollen morphology of 10 Allium L. taxa growing in Iran, representing three subgenera and six sections, were investigated via scanning electron microscopy. Pollen morphological characteristics indicated that pollen grains are monosulcate, heteropolar, and ellipsoidal. Polar axis revealed variation between 13.84 and 20.01 µm while Equatorial axis ranged from 20.4 to 42.37 µm. The forms of pollen grains were oblate, peroblate, and suboblate (mean of P/E ratio was 0.43 to 0.80). The aperture type and exine ornamentation were not homogeneous among the studied species. It was also observed that the sulcus extended from distal to proximal in two species of sect. Allium and one species of sect. Melanocrommyum. The exine was semitectate and the tectum was perforate. The variation in the main pollen characteristics in the investigated taxa allowed for recognizing two types of pollen grains in subg. Allium, Melanocrommyum and Amerallium: The first type had perforate rugulate trimming and high density of pollen perforations while the second type had perforate-striate-rugulate ornamentation and a low number of exine surface perforations. Conservation of Rare Reptiles and Amphibians: Should We Conserve Isolated Populations? Pamela Rutherford Department of Biology, Brandon University Abstract – Many species at risk occur in small, disjunct populations and this is certainly true for prairie reptiles and amphibians. From a conservation perspective, geographically peripheral populations may not be of concern if they are only listed because they occur in separate jurisdictions but the species’ range is widespread. In contrast, if they are genetically or morphologically unique populations, they may have considerable conservation value. I discuss the conservation of rare amphibians and reptiles in this context, and consider the strengths and weaknesses of focusing conservation efforts on isolated populations. Celebrating the Journey Home: The Reintroduction of Blackfooted Ferrets in Canada Bill Bristol Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada Joanne Tuckwell Parks Canada Abstract – After 5 years of planning, the Black-footed Ferret has returned home to Grasslands National Park in southwest Saskatchewan. The last confirmed sighting of a ferret in Canada was in the early 1900s, and ferrets were thought to be extinct until a small population was discovered in Wyoming. That discovery prompted the start of a captive breeding program that has produced over 6000 kits and contributes to the reintroduction program in the U.S., Mexico and now Canada. Seven zoos across the U.S. and Canada breed ferrets that are all sent to a pre-conditioning facility in Colorado before being reintroduced. This pre-conditioning facility is run by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and is a part of the Species Survival Program. The maintenance of whatever genetic diversity is left in this popula- tion is a high priority for the program in order to minimize inbreeding depression and maximize the success at each reintroduction site. -
