For the past two decades, researchers consistently have reported that law-related curricula and instruction make a positive impact on youth when compared to traditional approaches to teaching and learning law, civics, and government. The overall conclusion is that LRE programs have a positive effect on student knowledgeabout law and legal processes, and individual rights and responsibilities. Inaddition, there is evidence that LRE programs have a positive influence on student attitudes and behavior. The most positive changes in student behavior often are associated with LRE programs where the following elements are present: instruction is of high quality and promotes higher order thinking; students are actively involved in the instructional process; teachers thoughtfully mediate the curriculum through wise selection of materials and outside resource persons; administrators actively support the program; and instructors have a network of professional peer support. This review incorporates an analysis of the major databases that yielded 9 technical reports, 6 scholarly papers, and 25 dissertations directly linked to law-related education. -

“EEO is the Law” Poster Supplement Employers Holding Federal Contracts or Subcontracts Section Revisions The Executive Order 11246 section is revised as follows: RACE, COLOR, RELIGION, SEX, SEXUAL ORIENTATION, GENDER IDENTITY, NATIONAL ORIGIN Executive Order 11246, as amended, prohibits employment discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, or national origin, and requires affirmative action to ensure equality of opportunity in all aspects of employment. PAY SECRECY Executive Order 11246, as amended, protects applicants and employees from discrimination based on inquiring about, disclosing, or discussing their compensation or the compensation of other applicants or employees. The Individuals with Disabilities section is revised as follows: INDIVIDUALS WITH DISABILITIES Section 503 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, as amended, protects qualified individuals with disabilities from discrimination in hiring, promotion, discharge, pay, fringe benefits, job training, classification, referral, and other aspects of employment. Disability discrimination includes not making reasonable accommodation to the known physical or mental limitations of an otherwise qualified individual with a disability who is an applicant or employee, barring undue hardship to the employer. Section 503 also requires that Federal contractors take affirmative action to employ and advance in employment qualified individuals with disabilities at all levels of employment, including the executive level. Thomas Jefferson: "The study of the law qualifies a man to be useful to himself, to his neighbors, and to the public." II. Ask Several Students to give their definition of "Law." A. Even after years and thousands of dollars, "LAW" still is not easy to define B. What does law Consist of ? Law consists of enforceable rule governing relationships among individuals and between individuals and their society. 1. Students Need to Understand. a. The law is a set of general ideas b. When these general ideas are applied, a judge cannot fit a case to suit a rule; he must fit (or find) a rule to suit the unique case at hand. c. The judge must also supply legitimate reasons for his decisions. C. So, How was the Law Created. The law considered in this text are "man made" law. This law can (and will) change over time in response to the changes and needs of society. D. Example. Grandma, who is 87 years old, walks into a pawn shop. She wants to sell her ring that has been in the family for 200 years. Grandma asks the dealer, "how much will you give me for this ring." The dealer, in good faith, tells Grandma he doesn't know what kind of metal is in the ring, but he will give her $150. -

A number of scholars from a variety of disciplines, not all of them historians or lawyers, were invited to offer their thoughts about reorienting legal history generally, and sociolegal history in particular, away from the long-dominant framework of “law and society” and toward a new framework that does not depend on a binary, or a conjunction of two distinct fields imagined as outside of each other. The conveners posed the idea of legal history as being the study of “law as . .” about which we shall say more below. As is customary, papers were written and circulated. THE DUTY OF THE GOVERNMENT TO MAKE THE LAW KNOWN JOSEPH E. MURPHY* INTRODUCTION N a democracy it is accepted that the public should have full access to the lawmaking process.' It generally has gone unnoticed, how- ever, that governmental bodies, which may now be required to re- main open to the public for their deliberations, may nevertheless adopt laws and regulations with little or no publicity being given to those enactments. 2 Under an ancient Anglo-American common-law doctrine, a law may take effect from the moment it is signed, or an administrative rule may penalize conduct immediately after it is voted on, with no obligation on the lawmakers to publicize or promulgate their enactments.2 If a citizen acts in unavoidable ignorance of such afoul of the new law, his igno- an unpublicized enactment and runs 4 rance may offer him no legal defense. -

All of this is presented with a ferocity of conviction that leaves you unsettled. And at the end of it all, you have no idea how to go about correcting the situation. w Manicheanism, it seems, is a her esy not limited to Christians. III Perhaps the most unfortunate consequence of these books is that they may lend support to the view-a view that many are wont to adopt anyway-that history offers little help in understanding current constitutional issues. To be sure, good history is not easily come by. The historian has the difficult task of writing about the past but for the present; he must moderate a conversation between generations that may not speak in the same terms or, worse yet, may use the same terms but with different meanings. -

LASSON * ARYLAND HOLDS the unique and admirable distinction of having M been the State whose early history most directly ensured, and whose citizenry was most directly affected by, the first amendment's grant of religious liberty. The Supreme Court's docket is still liberally sprinkled with petitions calling for renewed interpretation of the establishment clause, and Marylanders will soon vote upon a proposed new state constitution with a similar provision-hence, the opportuneness for tracing Maryland's contribution to the cause of toleration and to the principle of church-state separation. The validity of an historical approach has long been acknowledged by both the textwriters and the courts.
