Even with rescheduling and other Covid-19 restrictions, there was a great crowd. This place is huge, really spread out, but there were still people everywhere. There was a good turnout of bikes, with BlackSheep MC, Fallen Riders Foundation, and Church in the Wind Ministries in attendance. The event is right off of Highway 190, so that’s a nice ride no matter which direction you come from. With the Bike Show and Pastor T’s Biker Church on Sunday, there was a lot to keep any rider happy.

John Schneider Studios near Holden is a great place, and he puts on some excellent events there. His annual “Bo’s Extravaganza” is normally held in April to celebrate his birthday, but due to Covid-19 concerns it was moved to July this year. Rescheduling an event this big must have been a logistical nightmare, but they didn’t miss a beat. It’s an old fashion outdoor car and motorcycle show, carnival, celebrity signing event along with performances by John Schneider & the Hazzard Nation band, and many musical guests. Pastor T and Church in the Wind Ministries was there for a Sunday morning Service. The Dukes of Hazzard Traveling Museum was on hand. There were stunts and car crashes, including a Dodge Challenger flying at least 100 feet over the Tickfaw River. Concerts guests included The Bellamy Brothers, Louisiana favorite Jo-El Sonnier, Cody McCarver who will be a Guest DJ on our Biker Music Radio page, Clifton Brown, Keith Burns, Andrew Pope, Presley & Taylor, the list just goes on. Before Dukes of Hazzard, John Schneider snuck onto the set of Smokey and the Bandit at the age of 16, and ended up as an extra. That experience had a big effect on his future acting career, which is why his latest movie is a tribute to that film. Stand on It follows a similar plot, with Schneider’s character “The Duke” driving a big rig on a bet he can complete a run within 24 hours. Much of Bo’s Extranvaganza will be scenes in the movie, with the carnival opening and closing the The big finale to the whole event was a car jump over film, and the two big car stunts being filmed in front of the Tickfaw River. Rob was airlifted away with severe damage to his right foot, which was only saved by an EMT on the scene. With weeks in the hospital, many surgeries, pins, plates and screws, and much physical therapy, Rob still has a long way to go. He is doing weill, but this will take many months of healing. I don’t want to go on too much about the accident, I’d rather talk about Rob. Road Dawg is one of the top mechanics and builders in the state, and in the whole region. He’s the first guy to have two bikes featured in our magazine, and there are many more that could easily be a cover bike. Rob was a young shop owner in SoCal, before coming to Baton Rouge Harley-Davidson, where he has been for 22 years. Rob and his wife Kim are two of the most loved people around. When visitors were not allowed at the hospital, the Sedotal family along with Pastor T and many others arranged a rooftop prayer run, gathering on the roof of a nearby building that Rob could see from his hospital room’s window. 10 11 Charlie Brechtel Gone But Not Forgotten Man, this is a hard one to write, none of us know what to say. “Goodtime Charlie”, Charlie Brechtel, was killed on his motorcycle on April 25th, 2020, just a few miles from his home in Copperopolis, CA. Although he had been living in California for quite a while, Charlie was born and raised in Louisiana, growing up in Chalmette. He was about as much a New Orleans guy as anyone could ever be. I would think most of our Readers already know who Charlie was, and many of you knew him personally. He was that kind of a guy. If you ever ended up in the same location, you would end up hanging out and becoming friends, and sharing those Good Times. Anyonw who isn’t familiar with Charlie should read our last issue, which also had Charlie on the cover, along with a 4 page feature. Charlie’s whole life was music, motorcycles, family, and friends. He was playing music by the time he was 10 years old, and even got some lessons from Fats Domino. He was probably not too much older when he started on bikes. launching a lifetime of what he called “Motorcyclism”. As I write this, the 80th Sturgis Rally is underway. This will be the first time in almost two decades The Charlie Brechtel Band won’t be playing at the Buffalo Chip. If you’ve been to Sturgis in the last 20 years. you’ve probably heard Charlie play. This year at Sturgis was supposed to be a special one, as several people we know were scheduled to be inducted into the Sturgis Hall of Fame. Charlie was really looking forward to that, and the last time I was a guest on his show at Bikers Inner Circle Radio, he told me that was a dream of his. Everyone figured Charlie would get inducted in a few years anyway, but now, people are pushing to get him in for 2021. No one deserves it more, but it’s very sad he won’t be there when it happens. We’re still gathering stories and pictures from friends and relatives, or even just fans, and we will be putting together a permanent GBNF Memorial page for Charlie. Anyone who wants to say something, email it to [email protected], and we’ll try to fit in as much as we can. Until then, we’ll let the pictures tell the story, but you really need to HEAR them. Look up “Charlie Brechtel Band” on YouTube, you’ll find hours of great stuff. RIP my Friend. Find her at http://www.iri5.com 12 13 Frosty’s Secret Rally I’ve spent a lot of my life on the road, and those were some great days and nights. I got my MC endorsement on my birthday in 1973, at the age of 15, because you could in those days in California. I left on my first road trip the next day, taking the canyons to the Pacific Coast Highway, and heading up the coastline. I was riding a 250cc two-stroke, and I had to mix gas and oil at each stop, maybe every 50 miles. I could go anywhere, limited only by the cash in my pocket and what I could strap to the bike. The TV show “Then Came Bronson” was still fresh in mind, and that was the life I wanted to live. I quickly moved up to Honda Twins, a CB450 seemed like a cross between a Cadillac and a road racer, but it was when I got my first Ironhead Sportster the world really opened up to me. I still love Ironheads, and still have several. They were fast, they were cool, they were cheap, and they were as reliable as a lawnmower. Army surpless pup tents weighed about 60 pounds and took up a LOT of space, so I learned how to do bedrolls, lean-to tarps, anything I could easily carry for a little protection. Eventually I had my kit sorted out, I had everything I needed on the bike. In those days we didn’t have cell phones, or debit cards, or 24 hour gas stations. The Interstate system was still under contruction. It was common to have to camp out next to a gas station waiting for them to open up the next day, or Monday, if you needed gas on the weekend. Other bikes would stop, we’d share food, and drink, and stories. We’d help each other work on bikes. Sometimes local bikers would see me stopped, and invite me back to their home. THIS is where stories about the Brotherhood of the Road come from. It’s got nothing to do with waving to a guy 6 lanes away. We really depended on each other, people were always ready to lend a hand, share what they had, and we always had a great time. We would tell stories, sing songs, probably drink a bit too much... Thinking about those days when we would just pull over to camp at any “good spot”, I decided to invite some friends over, for an old style side of the road campout. We picked out a spot on the Louisiana Biker Compound near the pond, and invited some really We do plan on doing this again, with future good people to “Ride In, Camp Out, Drink Up”. rallies being a little less secret. When it finally lit, I got the photo, then noticed I had been followed by several of the guys that thought I was on the trail to something exciting, only to be disappointed that it was just a butterfly. We stopped on the bridge the next time we crossed the Cossatot, and I took everyone’s picture. The photo of Kristi did not turn out well - it was unfocused, so I substituted it with one that I had of her at the Ruston Peach Festival a couple years ago. Sorry, Kristi. Now, about Andy. From what I was told (I was over a mile away when it happened), as he left the restaurant his bike got “squirrelly” and he lost control and went down.
